Hello,

I am not happy with my Brunswick Mastermind because it is not hooking like I expected it to on oily lanes, read a lot of reviews about the DV8 Thug Corrupt and the DV8 Grudge
Does anyone have any input as to what ball they prefer ?
I am a 222 average at 1 house that the lanes a dryer
I am a 210 average at my other house at the beginning of the year but they change managers and the lanes are oily oily oily so I have dropped to a 197 average there and I am getting frustrated ( This is my main house ) Hence why I am looking for a new ball that works for me on oily lanes and these 2 are what I am going to go with because I hear a lot of good things about them and I see they hook like crazy

If you have any other suggestions for different balls not names let me know
Any help is greatly appreciated

While the Mastermind has been out a while, you're not going to find many (if any) balls that hook more or handle oil better.

If you've had it for a while, I assume you have had an oil extraction done AND have had the surface refreshed. If not, you must start with that, because if that is the cause for its not handling the new oil amount, the same thing will happen to every other heavy oil ball.

If, however, you're expecting to hook the whole lane, then that is a different problem. Sometimes the oil pattern does not allow you to play the lane the way you want. You have to play the lane the way the lane wants to be played.

Just got a new Ebonite Warrior Elite and it hooks more than any ball I've ever had. Have already had it polished it twice and may have to change the surface so I can keep it on the right side. Unless you have a lot of speed, don't think if will work on anything but oily lanes. A friend of mine has the Track Paradox and it also hooks a lot and would probably be fairly close to the Warrior.

If your Mastermind isn't hooking as much as expected, you can try to do a surface adjustment. It could be using up the energy too early by having too much surface and won't hook down lane. What is the current surface on your Mastermind? If it is 500 or 1000, then you might want to try 2000 or 3000.

If you are looking for a new ball, then here is the order of most to least hooking potential: DV8 Grudge (Available 1/26), Brunswick Nirvana, Radical Guru Master.

It is the surface right out of the box... maybe I will get the ball resurfaced but I only own 1 ball so I might get the Grudge anyways to have more options

I never found the Mastermind to be a big hooking ball in the first place. It read and rolled in the midlane, but never crossed a lot of boards.
The Nirvana or Guru Supreme are both a lot stronger at the breakpoint and hook more than the Mastermind

As Brandon said, the newer balls are all stronger than the Mastermind and last longer between oil extractions. The composite cover balls seem to go around 100 games before you can get any oil out of them in a Rejuvenator. I haven't seen any performance changes that a quick surface touch up wouldn't fix. The Guru Master is the earliest hooking ball in my opinion followed by the Nirvana, and the Guru Supreme. I expect the Grudge to compete with the Master for the earliest hook. The Supreme covers the most boards because it saves more of its energy for the backend. It all depends on where you need the hook as to which the best one would be but you should see a noticeable improvement from any of the newer balls.

Could it be that you never found enough oil to use the Mastermind to its best capability?

Amount of hook and amount of backend does not truly relate to a ball's ability to handle oil. It did in the urethane age of the late 70s, 80s and early 90s. It doesn't for resin. Yes, there are bigger hookers out there, but they only satisfy the ego.
