Title: weak ball drilled strong or strong ball drilled weak?
Post by: 12XSECH on July 11, 2013, 05:21:40 PM
Fall season not to far away...My Nightmare is to strong for the house condition that basically puts out a stone street pattern. It leaves a lot of 10 pins. The balls I have now are Nightmare, Revenge, Hell raiser Terror and Reax...all strong balls... The terror worked the best on this shot probably because its pearl... But my question is.... What is better for this shot....an endless nightmare drilled weak? Or Something like a Marauder drilled strong? Ive seen balls like the roto grip wrecker work great, but Im leary on buying a "weaker" ball.

From what I've seen, the Wrecker isn't what you would think of as a "weak" ball. On a house shot, you would probably get away with being able to use it all night, and see more ball motion than your heavy oil stuff, because it's saving energy. Now, without being able to see you bowl (A video would really help us with a lot of your questions), it's just shooting in the dark.

Personally, I drill all of my stuff with 2 drill patterns. I barely want to bring my heavy oil stuff anymore, because my lower end stuff (900 Global Hook series) work so well, and I don't have to make major moves all night.

+1

A Misfit is a lot of ball for it's price point as well.  Mutiny? Tad more money than I'll fork over for a little more core and cover...

For what you are describing, I would trust a Misfit with a medium type drilling.  Not weak like a 5-5.5 inch layout but not a leverage style layout either.  Sounds like you could do something like a 4.5 inch layout to take a little of the skid/flip out of it without it being too early as well.

my polished critical was doing exactly what you claim this past Wednesday...I shot 175 first game lol...then i switched to my wrecker...finished the night 267, 280

The wrecker is no joke for 81 bucks!

You can go with either a Yellow pearl Misfit or the New Marauder Mutiny when it becomes available.  The mutiny will get down the lane longer than what you have now and it will have a nice smooth motion to the pocket.  It is a great benchmark ball when the lanes dry out or a drier house shot.

Pick the RIGHT ball for the condition then worry about the layout...Wrecker is a really good ball...

Terror --> Misfit Pearl is a huge jump in your bag.  The Mutiny is really long - as long as the Misfit.
From personal experience on stone street I have used a Nightmare on the fresh and Diva from game 3 on and have really liked my look.  I consider my Diva to be medium ball that is a step down from the terror.  I also like the idea of having something symmetrical as the lanes break down.

My theory on this question is as follows.

Strong hand = Weak ball, strong drill
Less hand = Strong ball, weak drill

I'm a 300rpm lefty (and old at 54  :-[) and I find if I need to control my break point and smooth out the over/under then the strong ball/weak drill option works best.  I have used 1" pin to PAP drillings to win tournaments on shorter sport shots. However, guys with more hand than me have had success with weaker covers/stronger layouts, so it is really a matter of finding what works best for you.
