High Energy
« on: December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM »
Ball NPS Score: Not Available
THE HIGH ENERGYâ„¢, the follow up to the exceptional premium ball release, The Energy, has arrived and is charged with explosive power.

Everyone familiar with the durability and superior performance of the Soakerâ„¢ reactive coverstock will be excited about The High Energy. As only DT can do, this coverstock is part solid and part pearlized Soaker resin, blended for a more controlled backend transition for when the lanes have a little heavier oil. This tweaked coverstock wraps the Polar Opposite Powerblocks (POP) core, the very same core found in The Energy, the ball which Steve Jaros used to win the PBA Tournament of Champions.

More power, more strikes... RELEASE IT!

Dyno-thane’s High Energy should be high on everyone’s ball purchasing minds. A quality release from a different flavor of ball company. Read the full review @  http://www.mybowler.com/Strapper's+Synopsis/1669.aspx

This is definately an overdue review...

Dynothane was nice enough to send myself a High Energy to test out:

Original Ball Specs: 3” pin / 3.44 oz of top weight
Drilling: 4-5/8” pin x 4-1/8” CG with pin 3-3/8 above midline with a 23/32" extra hole drilled 2" deep on my PAP.  Ending weights were 3/4 oz top weight, 1/2 oz side weight and 5/8 finger weight
Style: High rev player with a 12.5” track circumference and a high track (5-1/2” x 1-3/8”)

Test Condition (ball in box condition):
Medium oil with slight carry down on a 38ft THS…surface is synthetic heads with wood backends.  I have been able to play anywhere from 25 to 15 at the arrows and with a more direct line or an extreme swing to open up the lane.  I get a nice push out of the ball, but it doesn’t want to push past my break point like a pearl will sometimes do.  The backend is really predictable even though the ball is so strong on the turn.  This ball flat out drives when it hits the whole!!  I have recently been comparing this ball to Dynothane’s Vendetta Sniper and Pure Energy.  This ball gets the added length of the sniper, but due to the core dynamics I am able to get  more flare and finish off of the dry.  I have found that I use this ball when my Pure Energy encounters a little too much carry down or when I need to get in just a pinch deeper, where the particle ball won’t finish hard enough.

Overall I like the HE and think Dynothane has a great aggressive hybrid based ball on their hands.  This ball offered a great mid-lane read with a predictable, yet strong finish on medium heavy conditions.  The power through the pins in incredible…better than most every other ball I have thrown.  Overall I can see this ball becoming one of my favorites and when paired with the original Energy a league or tournament bowler could have a great 1-2 punch.

High Energy - box finish 1000 w /s

Blank ball specs: #15.4 oz 3-1/4" pin, 3.48 oz top wt.

Drilled specs: #14.15 oz, 3/4 oz top wt, 5/8 oz side, 5/8 finger wt.

Layout: pin to pap 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" cg to pap, x pin 2" above from midline, pin under ring to get it started early based on 2.60 rg core value. X-hole on val just under PAP, leaving 5/8 oz positive side weight.

House pattern: Fresh league shot, typical crown (wall) 41 ft buff, 50 units at 15' on the 20,
tapers out to 18 units @ 12, 12 units @ 8. Total of 23.7 m/l applied.

Lanes: Wood, high friction up front, in need of resurfacing.

Bowler specs: RH, 15-15.5 mph, rev rate higher than norm for speed.

Axis Tilt: 17*, high track, release will vary from 45-60*

Preferred line: 34-15-8 @ 42 feet, breakpoint.

After getting loose I realize the HE is too strong for the THS playing my standard line. This ball is all about OPEC if you ain't got it up front leave it in the bag. I got a full 5" flare in the oil I never thought a pearl solid could cover so many boards with surface like it has. I generally throw a Thing Returns, which has a huge angular finishing backend, but it's polished. The HE drilled the same pushes me 4 boards left with my feet and 4 more left with my target, with the same end result but without any over under. I never did get the ball slow down. The continuation of the HE only ends when it drops off the pin deck. The backend for me was a sharp turn, but predictable no over under. I reeled off 4 flush and thought I had the 5th, looked like the previous 4 only to see the 4-9. This happened twice in the first two games. I was able to kick out more corners than usual with the HE, generates more angle than most dull surface balls I’ve thrown in the past. By the same token I saw more than a normal amount of stone 9’s too much angle. Then again I’d rather line up on a 9 than shoot 10’s all night.
A much needed addition to my arsenal, a good lead ball or got to ball for heavier oil patterns.

I may be alone when i say this, but i was not a fan of the high energy. had it laid out the same as my energy which i loved, 5 x 4 1/2. expected this ball to have close to the same shape as the energy, with a little more hook overall, and a little more midlane. first few times i threw it i thought there was something wrong with it, would not move. tried polishing it as i thought it was burning up too soon, not the case, still didn't move. tried a weight hole in it to get the side weight down to about 1/2 oz, not the case still didn't move. overall was very dissapointed with the high energy. did not move as much as advertised. for me, didn't move at all.

I have drilled 2 of the High Energy's for myself and decided it's time for a review.

Ball #1 is drilled  with the pin at 4 1/2 inches under the ring finger. The CG is kicked to the right putting the mass bias in a strong position.
   o  o
      p
        cg
     o
This ball was an X-comp ball (double label) and the surface was so-so. I sandid this ball up to a 2000 grit abralon pad. Thia ball gets good length due to the dmoother surface. It reads the midlane very well and makes a strong move to the pocket with great cary.

Ball #2 is drilled with the pin at 5' above the ring finger with the cg kicked out the same as ball #1. This ball required a weight hole which was placed on my VAL above my axis. In the out of box condition this ball got good length with a smooth move to the pocket. The problem was this ball would'nt cary the corner to save it's soul. After trying it several times i was about to give up on it and get another one and put a disserent layout in it. I decided to take this ball to 2000 abralon sanding as i did ball #1. All i can say is WOW!! The ball now turned the corner with deffinate pop and carried great.

I am a Power Tweener with a ball speed around 16 - 18 mphs. Ball Tilt is 45 to 60 degrees. Layout on ball is 4 3/4 by 3. Surface prep is OOB with a silght touch of finesse. This ball is drilled like my Black Vendetta. The High Energy gets through the Heads easier that the black Vendetta and has a little pop on the back end. Try this ball on a Old Wood House with a 38 ft pattern and really bad heads. Great in the Fresh for a 684.Used in the late leauge and the ball burned up and needed to have juice up front to save energy. Used the ball on plastic the next night and the ball was too strong on for the dry and not enough in the oil. For me, this is a good medium ball with layout and surface prep. Btw, Plastic lane condition is 38 ft with crisp backends and not a heavy load of oil.

I recieved this ball in a drawing from allbowling.com. It was supposed to be the Energy but it came and it turned out to be the High Energy. anyway, The ball came with a 5" pin (i usually like 2-3) and 2.6oz top weight. We layed it out with the pin about 2 inches above my ring finger and the cg 1" from the center of my grip. this put it about 6 X 4 from my PAP. (6 1/2 over)
The shot was a walled up house shot with out of bounds at about 4.
I was bowling after a friday night mixed league bowled 3 games.
I spent the first game and a half trying to figure out where to throw the ball. It was too strong for the conditions on which I was throwing it. I kept moving left and the ball would just break harder and go thru the nose. finally I decided to move right and lay the ball down where I thought the out of bounds was. I was throwing at the 4 board down and in. The ball would go 40' and take a very big left turn. I shot 209 and 227 with it  after finding this line ( not bad for a 160 average I would say)

Overall I feel that this is a very good ball and I think I will try more dyno-thane products in the future.

Lane Conditions: Medium-Heavy Oil

Typical Conditions: House Shot

Type of Lane: All Wood

What part of the lane did you play? Fourth Arrow

Weight of bowling ball: 15

Surface of bowling ball: 1200 grit

Likes: Good read...Excellent Backend recovery on most shots
Rough enough to take care of carrydown conditions
Carry

Got this ball used with "less than 10 games" and it certainly looked like it. Anyway, I received the ball actually polished as the former owner liked the polished reaction better.

Bowler specs:
14-15 at pindeck
Decent Revs ~ Tweener at most.
Track about .5-1" from middle finger and 2-3" from thumb.
Sorry don't know my PAP

Ball is drilled with the pin directly below ring with the CG a little below midgrip and kicked right. Small weighthole about 3" right of CG and down an inch or so.

Polished the ball probably gets a good 5 feet further down the lane, and it is more forgiving on a lighter THS as well as less prone to burn out. If you are planning to use this ball when there isn't a whole lot of oil to play I would definitely reccommend some polish. Definitely more skid/flip with the polish applied.

At the center I sub at this ball worked pretty well polished, but wanted to bring it back to OOB for the slicker lanes I bowl at on Tuesdays. So far it has rolled very well for me, and is great in the 3rd game when everybody else starts leaving corner pins from carrydown. A earlier more predictable read at 1000 grit with no polish, and less over/under reaction. Still fairly forgiving if left out to the right, and will not overreact as it did sometimes when polished.

Overall hook this ball is fairly comparable to my Pure Energy in terms of overall boards covered... (a little later to start up but a little more backend). Probably 5 boards stronger than my ZR40.

Overall a great ball on Medium to Med-Heavy. I have actually been able to play it on less as long as I chased the oil line. (inside 4th gets a little weird for me tho). Thanks for another winner Phil!

Lane surfaces and patterns:

Condition A: Fresh oil on a compromised wood surface (last resurface: 2000)

Condition B: Fresh oil on a good wood surface (Resurfaced 2005)

Condition C:  Second Shift Migration following a 4 man league on a compromised wood surface (last resurface 2000)

All conditions were league conditions with significant amounts of oil in the middle of the lane and some friction to the right.  Condition B offered the truest transition of all three conditions with little resistance in the back end.

This ball started with 3 ¾ oz. top, with a 4” pin, Drilled 5X5 with the pin stacked above the ring finger and an extra hole.  Remaining weights: ½ positive.  The ball was left with it's out-of-the-box surface.

This ball rolled clean through the heads and midlane on all three conditions.  This ball got the best back end reaction and stability on condition C since there was plenty of top weight left and enough carrydown for the ball to hold and hit hard.  On Condition A and B, the High Energy rolled true and clean straight up the lane with a light pop and good hit.  The shape was more of an arc, although this was a great fall back ball on condition C.

Ok, Second High Energy is a Negative Pin placement with 7 inch from axis with with a postive C.g. with a weight hole on the axis.Ball is taken to 4000 grit with polish. Ball drilled for a late leauge and a condition specific needs. Center used at is an old wood house with bad heads and a hugh track area and spotty backends. Once the lanes burn up in the first 5 frames ... Ball rolls very well .. gives push on the bad heads and recovery on the bad backends .. Great condition specific ball.
