Element Zr40
« on: December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM »
Ball NPS Score: Not Available
Often it is in the subtle changes that can make a great ball into an amazing ball. This ball is a fine example of how the DT team sweats over details. The first ball release for 2006, Dyno-thane is proud to introduce the Element Zr40.
The Element Zr40 has the same motor as the other Elements, however this time it is inverted for a tighter level of predictability. To compliment this progression, the wildly successful Soakerâ„¢ coverstock was tweaked for the most aggressively controlled reaction in the MAX Performance line. Dyno-thane is most excited to reveal the Soaker XTC (eXTra Control).

BRAVO!!!  What a way to finish off the Element line!  The new Element Zr40 from Dyno-Thane has been sneak-previewed as a ball with length with a strong backend reaction, but I sure didn’t expect the performance I received from this “Silver Bullet”.  I drilled the new Element Zr40 with the pin 4 ½” from my PAP and the mass bias located on my VAL.  I left ½ ounces of positive side weight from the counter hole positioned on my PAP.  I was looking for a layout that would provide the best results for the forecasted reaction (again, length with a strong backend reaction) from the Zr40 given both my high ball speed rev rate for a medium-oiled house shot--the most likely condition now used in our area.

Let me just say for the record what a refreshing break this ball is from this latest trend of hook, hook, hook, and more hook.  Will this ball hook? Absolutely, but it allows for less flip and more pin action—the key to scoring in this game!  For comparisons, the length is comparable to the Vendetta Pearl but the Zr40 has a strong and more importantly, smooth backend as the Energy.  The carry is pure Dyno-Thane Max Performance. Sort of like the late-great Thing Returns on steroids.

During the last of the three-game league set, I thought the Zr40 was having a little trouble with carry down oil—but it was just me as once I adjusted, the Zr40 blasted out the last few ten pins. My evaluation broken down on a 10-point scale is as follows:

Length………………8
Backend……………8
Carry………………..9+
Overall………………9+

The silver Zr40 looks as good going down the lane as it performs.  I received two pre-orders just on its opening night performance.  Why does my shop push Dyno-Thane so hard?  Simple, because Dyno-Thane continues to produce balls like the new Zr40—in other words, excellence over excess.  This should be a big seller and should remain in main lineup for quite some time.  The Zr40 has just taken over the top position in my bag as my first go-to ball.

Ball Tested: Zr40 Soaker Pearl XTC
Pre Drill Specs: #15.2,  2.25 Pin, 3.68 oz top weight
Finish Specs:  14 lbs 11 oz , .75 oz pos side, .5 oz finger, 1.25 oz top weight.
Drill Pattern: 4-1/2 x 3-1/2, X-hole 1” past VAL and 1” below midline.
Bowler Specs: 15 mph, PAP 5-1/2”> ½ up, 17* axis tilt, 45-60* rotation at release.
Oil Pattern: Standard house crown, 50 units in the middle, 18 units on the 10, 42 ft buff
Preferred line: 34-15-8 @ 42 feet.

The Zr40 to begin with is just simply a great looking ball, great color combination, shades of charcoal grey pearlized cover stock polished to gem status, high lighted with bright yellow logos.

I chose to use my favorite drill pattern, 4-1/2 x 3-1/2 to compare it to its predecessor the AU 79. The Au for me was very snappy and on occasion was almost too violent at the breakpoint; the Zr40 is much smother at the breakpoint. It is still angular, but not the skid snap I had seen in the AU. Even feeding it into the drier area too soon it seemed to bounce without over reacting as the Au would respond.
Lowering the rg differential has tamed the backend somewhat but in a more favorable way, it is smoother, more controllable without sacrificing the backend or loss of hitting power. I only had to move my feet a couple boards right to play the same line as with the AU, but with one noticeable difference, I did not have to adjust the balls path as much or as frequently as with the AU, lowering the rg differential seemed to have made another positive improvement for my game, less adjustments as the shot begins to transition. It handled moderate carry down without any noticeable difference; this benefit has to be attributed to the Soaker’s footprint, excellent read, sustained hook without over reacting when encountering the drier area of the lane. I have approximately 21 games on it at the time of this review, and it has become my favorite ball. As usual another top tier ball from the “Guys” at Dynothane headquarters.
In a nut shell the Zr40 can be considered controlled violence.

Drilled 5 1/4 X 5 1/4 from pap.  No hole.
Out of box cover.

Drilled it on the 19th and bowled a PBA regional (pattern 3) that weekend.  Shot 300 during the tournament and finished 2nd overall.  It gave me something none of my other equipment could give me.  I felt like it created area down the lane if I missed right.  Very clean through the front with a controlled but defined movement in the mid-lane.  Best carrying ball I own at the moment.

Lane surfaces and patterns:

Condition A: Fresh oil on a compromised wood surface (last resurface: 2000)

Condition B: Fresh oil on a good wood surface (Resurfaced 2005)

Condition C:  Second Shift Migration following a 4 man league on a compromised wood surface (last resurface 2000)

All conditions were league conditions with significant amounts of oil in the middle of the lane and some friction to the right.  Condition B offered the truest transition of all three conditions with little resistance in the back end.

This ball started with 3 ¼ top with a 3 ½” pin, Drilled 4X4 with the pin in the center of the grip line above the fingers. Remaining weights: ¼ negative. This ball was left with its out-of-the-box shine.

This ball rolled the most consistent and offered the most roll stability across all patterns, especially true in the mid lanes and hit similarly as hard across all three patterns.  This ball also offered the mildest arc shaped reaction and the most readable transition of all five balls on all three conditions.  I could consider this ball my best go-to baseline ball on virtually all patterns and surfaces.

My ZR40 was drilled for length and big backend. This ball is not a big fan of oil, but play up the boards and it drives hard and take out the pins. After about 10 games or so it got a track on it and starting coming up earlier, this ball looks good and looks even better going down the lane, very easy to read and hit extremely hard for a pearl. Ball works great on short oil pattern or screaming backends.

This ball should not be evaluated on the out of box condition.  As most of Dynothane balls (excluding the dull ones) this ball is ment to preform after it picks up some games.  This ball is a completely different ball with 12 or so games on it.  Once the track wears in this ball explodes.  Enjoy it.

Drilled 2 inch pin, stacked, pin under ring.

The main things I noticed are:
Too much side roll and it skates straight through the breakpoint.
Doesn't like carry down too much.
But Over Under. I've heard a few people say this.

The reaction shape was smooth for me, but still a defined hook, as a previous review read.

Grade: B

Wanted to send a BIG THANK YOU to Billy for going the extra mile in having this ball sent to the both at Nationals for me when my original ball didn't arrive until after I left.  I appreciate all your efforts.

ZR40 started at 15.03lbs with 3.25pin
Laid this ball out with a control 4" pin/PAP & 3" CG/PAP, placed pin on ring finger and drilled out to slightly lower RG.  ZR40 has a smooth roll and strong but very controlled turn at the break.  Took to Bowlers Journal to break in and see how she rolled.  OOB, this ball had the exact shape I was looking for just needed a little more length for the Nationals Shot.  Ran it up to 4000 Abralon and hit lightly with Ultimate Cleaner/Polish which did the trick.  Proving to be another versatile D/T ball as I was able to throw up the boards or move in and play 4th arrow with good success.  Looks to be another great addition.  Will post again after I get it broke in.

Thanks again Billy!

I have had so many compliments about this ball and its appearance.  My layout was for length.   I can pull this out as the laned get drier.   Pin is place to the right of my ring finger with the cg located underneath.  short pin bowling ball unlike my other Dynothanes which features a long pin.   At the end of the league night I throwing 15 board out to 5 on the right side and did not compromise any finishing power on the back end.   On a fresh condition I can down and in, either 5 or 10 board.   I think, for me, this ball is a better fit on the drier conditions.

Drilled mine up with the pin at 4 3/4 inches , pin below the fingers on the grip line. Cg is located at 3 1/2 inches just above and to the right of the thumb. Ending weights are 7/8 side 41/8 finger, 3/4 top.  Threw this ball on the house shot  40 feet with extremely clean back ends. This ball was extremely clean through the heads - picked up a nice midlane roll with a strong but very arcing controlled hook through the pins. When i was forced real deep with the ball all it took was a slight hand position adjustment to make the ball hit a little stronger. Did'nt shoot big numbers with it as i made too many errors in release and speed but when i got it off clean all i can say is WOW!! Will update after some more tweaking on the thumb. I liked this ball well enough I have already ordered 2 more.

Just realized that I had forgotten to post my review on this ball...so here ya go:

Dynothane was nice enough to send myself a Element Zr40 to test out:

Original Ball Specs: 15lbs - 5oz, 3.50oz Top, 2.5" Pin
Drilling: 5-5/8 Pin-PAP, 4-1/4 CG-PAP drilled at 55 degrees and no weight hole required. Ending weights 11/16 Side, 13/16 Finger, 1.5oz Top Weight.
Style: High rev player with a 12.5” track circumference and a high track (5-1/2” x 1-3/8”)

Test Conditions / Review:
Med / Heavy…Fresh house shot on synthetic heads / wood backends, Med oil on second shift shot (same lanes) and a full synthetic house at a tournament.

For me the Zr40 really shined on fresh conditions where a "benchmark" ball like the Zr40 is right at home.  However, while the ball really shines on fresh oil I have had issues with following the transition due to the ball being less "snappy" than some of my other equipement.  The reaction reminds me of the low pin Sniper that I drilled in that the ball won't pick-up enough on the backend to really be effective deeper on the lane.  At a recent tournament I had a great look for the first game and a half and after that the ball just was inconsistent around the corner...but that's why we carry more than one ball.

Beyond fresh conditions the Zr40 did find itself at home at on older wooden house.  While I watched people around me having to move left every other frame I was able to keep the Zr40 in play longer due to its roll characteristics.  In practice I had an equally good look with my high pin Sniper, but knew that the heads would go away too fast with that ball.  That's why having a benchmark ball with a pearl coverstock is so nice; it will keep your down lane reaction in check, but still give you a nice push through the heads.

Overall Feelings: The proven core design of the Element Au79 has been utilized to create another winner for Dynothane.  This time the core had been inverted to create early roll and a more even reaction.  The Zr40 will be a welcome addition to the line-up for those bowlers looking for a lower RG pearl that can be utilized as a benchmark ball.

The Zr is versatile to say the least. It strength lies in its ability to control the break down. It will easily get dwon the lane with strong recovery. Its tru strength is the way it will control wet/dry.

Drillings:

5 X 5
5 X 4  no XH 5/8 Pos
5 X 5.5 XH to neg 1/2

I drilled my Zr40 with the pin about 2 inches above my fingers on my span line, cg slightly positive, no extra hole.  Pin is about 5 1/4 inches from my PAP with about a 80 degree layout.  Ball had a 4" pin with 2.68 top weight before drilling.

My Zr40 is really long, very clean through the front part of the lane, making a smooth move at the break point, not as sharp as I had hoped, but very controllable, specially on hooking back ends.  This ball rolls and reads the lanes very consistently whether it is a fresh league shot, broken down league shot or PBA condition.  As long as the back ends are clean, nice finish through the pins with good carry.  The Zr40 doesn't like carry down very much, only the big handed players will make this ball work on tight back ends.

Shell is too strong to be a true dry lane ball, but works well when the heads are good, could be a drier lane ball for straight players with low revs and/or high ball speed.  I like this ball alot on wood lanes.

Hope this helps ya....

Drilled essentially stacked leverage the ball has a smooth, but strong mid lane and a continuous backend. Can play in or just inside the track area, of a normally medium house shot. Outside the track area the cover is too strong. Too deep the ball doesn't corner strong enough for me. Excellent hitting power. Excellent ball. I would highly recommend.
