Lets talk awesome!!

The Thing Returns is a ball with a vendetta! I drilled a 15 lb Tr with 3.5 top wt. with a label drill. I proceededto take it out on the lane for some local scratch games. lets say awesome....ga,es of 215, 220, 255, 280, 258, 243.

On to ball..
the Tr manages to  have great hold in over/under conditions. The pearl soaker cover has really given the ball strengths where it needed them. Compared to the thing I would highly rec. the Tr. For those bowlers who would like control but the hitting power of the V black, then look no further!!

The Thing Returns really has the drive of a mack truck with no brakes...
I have a tournament this week and will update its progess on wood lanes..

Success!  That is what Dynothane must have been screaming when they made this ball.

For all of you out there who loved The Thing, but hated having to put the ball away too soon, you'll love The Thing Returns!  Like The Thing, The Thing Returns has tremendous hitting power and carry.

With the Soaker coverstock, The Thing would bite through oil and still give you the reaction you needed, but now with the new Peralized Soaker coverstock on The Thing Returns, the ball not only bites through oil, but stays in play longer!  It works great in light medium to oil conditions, and as the lanes begin to break down from a fresh medium oil, this ball holds strong.

I drilled The Thing Returns with a 4.5" x 3" layout, and the ball gave me length, a smooth and strong hook, with plenty of control.  Being a cranker myself, this ball worked tremendously in my hands.

Whether you are a cranker, tweener, or a stroker, The Thing Returns would be very friendly in your hands.  I give it two thumbs up for a medium to oil condition ball.

Ok this one is even better with a completely different reaction!!!!
I drilled mine 4x4 with no weight hole, similar to my original Thing. This ball gets down the lane and makes an unbelievable move to the pocket. When this one makes its turn, it makes its turn. If you thought the first one was hard hitting, than you'll have to add this one to your arsenal. I bowled a couple of games on a fresh house shot 42 feet and had the entire lane with this one. I moved a couple of boards in from where I was standing with my Thing and it was sick. Anywhere near my mark I struck. Usually my yanks there will be flat dimes, but not with this ball. The ball would get about 40 feet and wham, turn hard to the pocket. I can't say enough about the Thing series from Dyno-Thane, they really give you two different, but good looks to attacking the lanes, and the carry is dynamite. Kicks out those corners like the rest of the balls from Dyno-Thane. If you don't own a Dyno-Thane ball, go buy one, this one would be a good start. You will not be disappointed.

Lets say man ohhh man...I used the return on wood surface oiled 38 ft...and whoooo...750 missing 4-4 pins...

Then back to house 40 ft blend..and even stronger...definately a ball for guys who like to have a ball recover and carry on those tricky medium oil shots that break down ugly....

If you don't have a Dynothane then you better get one!!

THE THING RETURNS just won me my 4th Senior All Star Bowling Assoc  scratch tournament this year(1-2NOV). On one of the most demanding conditions,..gutter to gutter 38 feet and very dry backends, I was able to move deep inside around 21-22 and swing to 14, and get this ball to really hit. This 15 pound striking machine is pin over the fingers, CG below the ring finger on the midline, and a pap hole make this ball glide thru the heads and really pop on the back end. The surface was out of the box shiny. The ball stores more energy than any other ball I've seen, it's continuous roll and drive through the pocket is no match for kicking those pesky corners, and trip 4 pins...Dynothane has built a great ball that will be in my bag for a long time...Thanks Phil, Billy and the gang at DYNOTHANE...keep'em coming....jimensminger

Rev monster but where have you been hiding  Dyno-Thane has been making balls for quite sometime now. I hope you where kidding when you traded a wholesale ball cost $140 for a ball that could be bought off of ebay for $20.00 and is illegal. One thing about Dyno-Thane stick with the patterns that They ship with the ball. I was hoping this was a stupid post if not you have turned out to be one of the strangest ppl on here. What is sad you could have got alot more than just a damn quasar for the thing returns.

this is by far the best dyno-thane so far and the definetly did their reasech if this continues i will find my bag full of dyno thanes. this ball comes through to the pocket so hard that u dont leave many splits. one thing that it does leave is 10 pins but not as many as others.

I have had The Thing Returns for about a month, so this review will have some dust on it!

This ball is a fifteen-pounder, 2 1/4" pin out, drilled 5" X 4 1/4" pin under bridge, CG in positive thumb quadrant, mass bias in strong position.  With the low top weight (2.34 ounces), an X-hole was unnecessary.

The Thing Returns by Dyno-Thane is great on medium oil, but carrydown can cause this ball to skid past the breakpoint.  I can play this ball up the boards (thanks to the higher RG) with a fair amount of speed.  Power at (AND in) the pocket was exceptional.  The Thing Returns can send messengers and carry corners on some seemingly flat or light hits, but this ball needs dry backs to finish.

I finished third (and won $50) in our association singles tournament last month with a 738 series (237-258-243).  I have hit 774 (non-sanctioned) with this ball, my best series in over three years!  In addition to four 700-plus series, The Thing Returns has netted me four games over 275, including a 299 last night in league play (solid 7-pin kept me from perfection, but I still won another $50 for my effort)!

Had my ball now for a couple of weeks and here's what I'm noticing....
First my specs-medium speed, medium revs 15# ball with 1 1/2" pin.. pin just below ring finger (touching) and cg in center of grip. Weighthole drilled to help hook, ball left in box condition. Bowl on older wooden lanes with first shift oiling..usually tophat pattern.
First week I used it, it seemed really sensitive to hand/speed variations. Did an adequate job, but not what I had hoped....
Got a few more games of practice on it and last night conditions matched up much better. Had a low 600 with it..unfortunately alot of operator errors  Ball was coming in sweet in practice but got excited first game and tugged a few. Second game had 10 out of 12 strikes and last game 7 out of 12.
*Shots high-  tend to leave a few 4 pins and alot of 6-10's.
*Shots in pocket-  devastating hits! Ball seems to have plenty of power in the pocket.
*Shots light-  mixes them well and usually carries a strike.
Overall this ball has good length and nice snap on the backend with above average carry. If you hit the pocket or light, you can count on carrying alot of strikes. So far with my limited time with this ball, I'd give it an 8.5 out of 10. I'll update this review after I get a few more series on it...
Update-Bowled another Tues night league with it...Hit with this ball is very hard! Pocket shots clear out QUICK and get alot of good messengers with light hits. I get better carry with proper shots with this ball than any other I've had. Only negative so far is it's dislike for heavy carrydown...started leaving a few more 10 pins. So far extremely happy with my first Dynothane purchase....

Got my Thing Returns drilled up today. Exactly the reaction I was hoping for on the medium house shot I bowled on tonight. Good length, awesome backend. Went 258-214-279= 751 tonight. I'll post a more detailed  review after I try it on different conditions and houses. So far I like what I see!

Purchased mine used from eBay and used the drilling it came with... but I do not have it in front of me right now so I will post info later. I am a medium speed, medium rev player, normally preferring feet-20 to 10 at the arrows or thereaobouts. On fresh oil, I found the ball a bit "squirty" but when I kept the speed down a bit, it has a devastating back-end. I have gone from 189 - 268 in my 9 games so far, and am averaging 209 (current league average on fresh oil is an even deuce.

I also got the Vendetta Particle, and Throttle-R at the same time so I am not using the Thing Returns exclusively... I am testing all of those balls as I write this.

I believe that this ball, with its AMAZING ability to clear the heads, will come in handy next month at the state tournament (SC) since one of the houses has wood lanes with burnt-out heads. While not what I would call a "control" ball, when conditions are right, this ball carries everyting near the pocket, although in the third game the other night, I got a bit tentative and left some ten pins but I think as I gain confidence with it, it will stay the course... as long as I DO!

More to follow as I gain experience with it.

The Thing Returns is an amazing piece of plastic!

See my profile for info on me.

I got my 14# T/R lightly used, from bamaster.  Tony has a hand the size of a catcher's mitt, so I had to have it plugged and redrilled before I could even try it.  It has a 2" pin, so layout options were somewhat limited.  We put the pin just below and to the right of the ring finger, 3" from PAP, and put the CG just above grip center, 5" from PAP.

The shot they put down at the local house is a Christmas tree pattern, with a puddle in the middle, tapering off to 4 units outside of 5.  They run the pattern to 36' and buff to 42'.

My Thursday night league is coming down to the wire, so I was a little nervous about using the T/R with no prior experience.  I also thought the fresh shot might be a little too much oil for it, so I started with the Super Power.  I couldn't get it off my hand cleanly though, kept hanging on my thumb, so in the 5th frame, I said the hell with it, at least I know I can get a clean release with the Thing Returns.  Let's take her out for a spin!

14 strikes later, I pulled it a little high and left a 4 pin.  Spare, sheet, 279 preceded by a 258.  Finished with 224 for a nice 761, my first 7 of the year.  Needless to say, I'm very glad I put the Thing Returns up on the rack.

With its 3x5 layout, the ball starts up a little sooner than it normally would, but still gets the nice length you expect from a pearl, and makes a strong arcing motion toward the pocket at the breakpoint.

This thing (returns) has so many ways to knock over 10 pins, they're hard to keep track of.  10 in the pit, can openers, rolling the 10 pin, trip 4s, you name it.  Awesome striking machine, very forgiving of operator error.

I haven't tried it on anything other than a fresh, medium oil house shot, so I can't say whether or not it can handle more oil, or how it would have worked after another three games, but for what I bowled on last night, it was perfect.

10 out of 10.  I don't know how a ball could get any better than this.

Oh yeah, thanks again Tony!

Picked this up used from JPRLane 1.  Specs:

15lbs
Drilled label
Box finish

I picked this one up hoping that it would be my go-to option for lighter conditions. I haven't gotten the chance to try it on a THS just yet, but I may have been in error in thinking that this one would handle light. From what I have seen so far, this ball gets good length, but the backend is crazy strong. I'm not implying that this is a bad thing, it's just a lot stronger than what I was expecting. As far as backend movement is concerned, this ball appeared to outhook my Thing by 4-5 boards easy, and with a lot more angle. Granted, I was not testing it on the conditions that I had in mind. I think that on my THS I may be able to amp up the speed and go deep and kill with this ball; it's just going to take more time and testing before I'll know for sure. The hit is very strong, like my other Dyno balls, and it looks great going down the lane. I think it's going to be a great ball, it may just be stronger than what I was looking for. If so, I guess a Barrage could be on order soon. Still, another solid DynoThane ball.

Are people still buying other brands of equipment?  I purchased this ball in Jan of '04 and raised my average by 11 pins by the end of the season in April from 215 to 226.  This included two 800s, a 300 and an uncountable number of 700s.  This ball carries so much that my own teammates were getting mad at me.  Three out of the five went and bought their own.

The ball rolls beautifully and then gets to the backends and jumps into the pocket throwing the pins on to each other like a priest on a child.  I consider this the luckiest ball I have ever owned and I think it is diminishing my credibility as a good bowler due to the amount of luck.  See if care though, I won over a $1200 in the first 5 weeks of ownership.  I have since sold off all of my other equipment making that 3 ball bag I have very empty.

IF YOU ARE READING THIS REVIEW CONSIDERING WHAT TO BUY FOR A HOUSE SHOT, DO NOT BUY ANYTHING ELSE (UNLESS IT IS ANOTHER DYNOTHANE BALL).

Post by: Phillip Marlowe on July 13, 2004, 11:14:10 PM
The clock on the wall and the dark outside my window, told me "Phillip, go home, its 12:30 a.m."  But with a bank account balance just this side of absolute zero, I couldn't bring myself to even go out for a cup of Myrtle's Grill coffee.  At precisely 12:31, he came into the office.  A small man, with narrow eyes and a cold cut nose, he said he had tried to call earlier.  He wanted to hire me.  He wanted me to investigate a mysterious Thing that had Returned ... to find out what it was and why it had invaded his place, "Flash Finish Lanes and Grill."  He paid me two days' fee in advance.  I went to Myrtle's bought a cup of joe and went to bed feeling rich.

I went to the Pro Shop at Flash Finish and picked up two 15 pound examples of these "Thing Returns" eggs, drilled 5x4 and 4x5.  It was pearlized, crayola deep orange and the purple you find only in bowling balls and neon signs outside of pool halls.  The cover was supposed to soak up oil like the Swifter cleans linoleum tile and to be cleaner than Pine Sol and stronger than a double gin gimlet.  I tried it on house tapers, light through medium heavy and a variety of sport and "pro" conditions to see why it had returned.  I kept good notes so I could give my client -- the one who paid me for two days' work in advance and promised more upon completion of the investigation -- a report, unencumbered by poor memory or lack of booze.

1. Length.  On anything from light to medium plus oil, this one went down the lane like a one-man sled.  Absolutely clean to the breakpoint even on spotty conditions, it did not overskid when it hit the dry, changing directions smoothly, like Velma hearing Moose was coming to see her. On heavy oil, well, it just kept going.  But if there was a dry area after the heads and midlanes, it went left.

2. How did it move?  Strong, hard and pretty, like Chyna in black leather at a cage match.  There were no flying Wallenda flips, just a hard, smooth arc, tracing the beginning of a parabola that, if you saw it on a dame -- like maybe Raquel -- would cause Cardiac arrest in a llama. For a pearl, it shrugged off carrydown surprisingly well.

3. How much did it move?  A lot.  For the conditions and its place in the arsenal, a Heidi Fleiss type hooker.  I immediately ordered two double Jack's and Diet Cokes to make sure I wasn't seeing things.  I wasn't.  Big mover for a medium light ball.  I never saw it rollout.

4. How did it hit? Dresden.  Tokyo.  Hiroshima.  The Thing Returns.  Light, pins flew around like Dorothy's house.  Heavy, fours fall like Apollo Creed in Rocky IV and if there is a problem it is stone oblisks bearing "8" and "9".  Very good.  Real Good.  Almost as good as my gin gimlet.  Almost.

5. What kind of control did it give me? As predictable as a banker's hours -- and no less precise.  Miss left and Miss Right...well I had some of each of those dames.  Speed sensitive but not rev sensitive, you felt you like you could be a little rough with her, Maddy Ross style, and still get a reasonable result.

6. What is the overall report of the investigation? I know why the Thing Returns.  Because folks like it.  Predictable, versatile, a looker and useful in a range of roles -- like Jane Fonda withouth the irritating personality. Everyone can use one. My client bought one on my recommendation.  I got an extra day's pay as a bonus.  Whooppee.

i have to start with saying that this is one of the best balls i have ever owned. dyno-thane has changed my outlook on bowling, the cores the reaction the balls themselves.  This ball hits like a tank i just shot a 775 with it and i carried everything, the lay out of the ball is, pin above my fingers and the cgs kicked out of the palm, it gets down the lane and has enough to get to the pocket and carry. have to say my new fav when it comes to a ball.

Ball goes extremely long before it makes a nasty left turn, this ball is one of the easiest balls to throw, revs up great and carries evrything. I did find that if you hit this ball to hard it doesn't seem to carry as well, ease up a little and let the ball do the work, it destroys the pins, great ball for short oil or tournaments.

Ball: Thing Returns, box finish

Pre Drill: #15.3 oz, 3-1/2” Pin

Drilled Specs: ½ oz Side, ½ oz finger, 1 oz top, 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 pin under ring.

Bowlers Specs:  PAP 5-1/2> ½” up, 15 mph, 45* release with 17* axis
tilt.

Oil Pattern: fresh house crown, (wall) buff to 41 ft., Wood lanes in need of resurfacing,

 Preferred line: 34-15-8 @ 42 feet, breakpoint.

I drilled the TR with the pin under to get her into an earlier roll. In the past I have had problems with highly polished balls being thrown through the break point and not having enough recovery. The TR simply gives me a better mid lane read with a ton of recovery. The finishing capabilities of the TR in truly remarkable. I never expected it to recover ( based off the core values) as it does. I have yet to see an over/under reaction, it reads the mids then begins the strong arc to the pocket. It is much more forgiving than I had anticipated, with continuation through the pocket. I have seen a few less corner pins than usual in a normal league night, I tend to believe it has to do with the increased angle of entry, not as flat as the previous dull covers I use to throw. It has become my benchmark ball, first out of the bag ball on league nights.

I had been using all Morich products primarily a TA on THS, the TR goes longer, stores more energy and has more recovery than the TA. It allows me to play about 3 more boards deeper with my feet and target line than normal.

A great addition to anyone’s arsenal.
