The New Thing is Here!

Phil Cardinale and the good people at Dynothane have done it again! The New Dynothane "THING" IS one Powerful ball! This new ball features the very successful "Soaker Reactive" coverstock that was first used on the "Element".
The New weight block design with "Dense Core" technology retains energy threw the Mid-Lane for a "OUT OF THIS WORLD" Backend explosion! Tremendous Hitting power with Hook and more Hook! Those of you who love to "Strap" the ball will enjoy the overall strength of this "Thing"! and those of us who are considered "tweener" or "Power Stokers" will enjoy the strong "Angular" move to the pocket that this ball will provide without allot of effort!

The "Soaker" coverstock is strong enough to play in the oil! and the is Very Friendly to adjust to different lane conditions!

If you have not tried a Dynothane ball yet this season, This is the one to cut your teeth on! This ball is Strong and Friendly!

We test drilled (3) of these babies and used the following drillings!
4X4 label Leverage, 3-3/8 Pin Strong Stacked Leverage, and 4-1/2 X 4 Drilling with the pin just under the ring finger. We found this New "Thing" to be very driller friendly! and with each ball we were able to find the pocket and strike with No problem! The Stacked Leverage drilling was the strongest in our hands and it allowed me to open up a fresh pair of lanes without much effort.

Those of you who "Crank" the ball will enjoy the 4-1/2 X 4 Drilling pattern the best! This will provide you with just enough control to keep your "THING" on the lanes!

This ball comes polished "Out of the Box" and we found this was More than enough cover to get a great lane reaction and hook!

This New Ball will become the "Bench Mark" ball for the New Dynothane Ball Company! I am Highly recommending this ball to all bowlers!

Greeting's
Drill a 15lb for a regional player. The ball came with good decent specs.
Pin was out 3" and the top was 3.22. He was looking for a hockey stick motion. His PAP is 5 3/4 X 1/2. I laid the ball out the a 5x3x2 pattern. Putting the pin above his bridge and 2" away from the mid-plane line. This is the flip part. The pattern was a house, fresh oil shot. 10 to 10 christmas tree. Buff to 42'. He got himself lined up, with his left foot on 39. Used 10 for his breakpoint. He is righthanded. The ball cleared the heads quick, and with little effort. As the ball read the dry, it had the someone kicking it effect on the lane. The direction change was fast and decisive. The ball cleared the pocket easily, and with very little deflection. 266 and 268 out of the box.

I have to agree with what has been said about this ball. Drilled on the # 2 pattern but had to put a 31/32 hole to remove the excess side weight. I find the ball to make real hard move to pocket (snaping). I find this ball to hit as hard as any ball I have ever owned.

The Thing has explosive power as it reaches the pins.  Due to it's low pin base, carry with this ball is magnificant.  The reaction is indeed out of this world.  This is another great piece of equipment designed by Phil Cardinale, and the staff at Dynothane.  Only if more people would recognize a great ball company when then see one.  I belive in the upcoming bowling balls released, we will see what kinds of tricks Dynothane has up it's sleeve. I would definately rate this ball with a 10 out of 10 for it's versatility to almost any lane conditions encountered.

Have drilled a couple Things now, most recently for my wife, Janette.  She is a petite woman, but throws 15lbs, throws it very well.  About 15 MPH with less than average rev rate, but she doesn't throw it dead straight either.  Averages 190+ in two leagues in a relatively low scoring house.

This ball had the pin out about 2 inches with 3.4 top weight.  She loves her Shock Trauma, but wanted a ball that would be a little longer, and recover better when the lanes break down.  The Shock Trauma is box finish dullish and she can't get it to turn the corner well when she is in about 3rd arrow.  She doesn't really like the balls that jerk hard at the break point, so we still wanted the ball to be smooth overall.

I used a basic label shift.  Pin was at 2:00 to the cg or about 105 degrees.  The pin was just below the ring finger level, but the whole label shift about 2 inches to the right.  Had to use a small hole, 6" right of her span center to get the ball back to legal.  This put the pin about 3 inches from her PAP with the CG about 3 1/2 inches from her PAP.  Mass bias would be over to the left of her thumb hole and in the track area.

Just as the previous posters have stated, this ball is awesome.  I brought it out to Janette, just as the practice time was over for league.  I told her stay where she was (throwing her Shock Trauma).  She missed the first couple shots right of her break point and the ball recovered great!  The shots were probably 2 pin high if she throws her Shock Trauma!  Smash the pocket, 10 in the pit.  The ball carries light hits well too, which is kinda tough for a weaker release player on Twister pins.  She shot 667 that night right out of the box.  She is averaging 191 in this scratch league, but she doesn't strike alot, spares everything.

I am very impressed with this ball.  Hitting power is tremendous.  I think using Janette as my model might be a good idea, she is more similar to the average to above average league bowler.  She is a good spare shooter, and is consistent, just doesn't carry alot of strikes in a row.

When she had to move left, the ball recovered well, and hit very hard.  A couple times she pulled the ball left of target, which for her causes her to not get as much on the ball, the ball held line, went in the pocket and carried here too.  Seems to carry pocket hits extremely well, and off pocket pretty well.

I think most players can use this ball.  I would rate it an 8.5 on the total hook scale, not the most you can buy, but plenty.  For the straight players, this ball may go too long for heavy oil, but can use it on mediums.  Although this ball does have some pearl in it, you can scotch brite it a little for heavier oil.  I think the tweeners love this ball.  Can use it most of the time.  The big hook guys are gonna need some oil or lots of speed.  My DT staff player, Tony, loves the ball but it hooks so much, he can't throw it very often.

I really like this shell, it is shiny, but doesn't skate.  It reads the lane very well, doesn't over react.  Good weight block to shell match.  This ball can be very versatile, and I think is almost a no lose purchase.  Nice work Uncle Phil!!!

Hope this helps ya....

What Can I say?
This BAll is for you!!

Talk about carry and versatility.
I have drilled up about 15 of these things in the last three weeks
ranging from neg label to stack leverage.
The key to this ball is it adapting to the bowler.

I drilled mine neg label ( 5x5.5...ring finger above pin)
The ball originally started out with 3 oz top.
Ending weights were
top-1.2 oz
side-- - .25 oz
thumb  .25 oz
pin 3.5

I have been able to open up on a fresh 40 ft pattern with this ball and bump the dry. I have been experimenting with playing straight up 3 board with minimal rotation.. to my amazement the ball rolls hard and carries well.

Once again Phil, Kendra, Drew.. Job well done.. I though you out did yourself with Vendetta Particle But jeez... Keep it up!!

The thing.. Is the ball that all bowlers have been waiting for

Top 5
1. Thing
2. Barrage
3. X factor
4. Cherry Bomb
5. Vendetta Particle

I am a Tweener, 17-19MPH, Righty, Medium Revs, 45% Axis Tilt, PBA bowler.  I drilled this ball Stack Leverage.  I haven't had a chance to use it on the Sport Shot yet but I have used it three times on three different house conditions.  Condition #1 is 40 Feet, out of bounds to the gutter with clean backends.  #2 is 2nd shift 40 feet with carrydown and the 3rd is 45 feet with carrydown oiled 5 to 5.  All the leagues are shot on Synthetic Lanes.

Condition #1 - The ball wasn't ready until the middle of the second game.  I was able to move right with this ball and play a straighter line to the pocket.  With most of my other equipment I have to swing the lane.  Not with this ball.  Moved to 35 with my feet and played 20-10 very comfortably.  The ball is a smooth, even arc to the pocket not the big backend snap I thought I would get based on the backend rating.  Not bad though.  The ball carried well both the light and heavy hits.  And the ball hits HARD.  I was throwing wood like a lumberjack.  I had about I 2-3 board area left or right.  Tug left and the ball held, miss right and the ball came back.

Condition #2 - Played the same area as condition 1.  There was no difference in ball reaction, which was surprising.  I shot 753 with games of 279, 247, 227.  This ball didn't seemed bothered by the carrydown at all.  Went long and arced in.  Carry was great.  Hit light and miss right an I Carried.  Tug left and the ball set-up and carried.  I started to feel a little guilty that I can miss and carry so much.  Knowing you can miss by a few boards in either direction will make you feel invincible.

Condition # 3 - Different house, same reaction.  Stood in the exact same place, but due to the 5 to 5 oil pattern I was able to miss even more to the right and have the ball bounce back.  The heads were a little torn up and the lanes somewhat spotty.  It didn't bother this ball any.  Shot a 678 with games of 245, 235, 198.  The last game was either a 4 pin or 10 pin.  I lost most of the carry.  As the heads got more and more chewed up and the oil pushed further the ball started to quit a little in the back.  Because I wanted to test the ball I stayed with it.  The 4s were because I started to try to jam it in the hole, 10s were a weak hit.

Overall - This is another winner from the Dynothane Family.  If you are looking for a big hockey stick hook than this might not be the ball for you.  If you are looking for a big controllable move to the pocket that will carry on almost any lane condition than look no further.  Aside from the great balls they make they have the most courteous staff I have ever dealt with.  Keep doing what you are doing Dynothane, between the balls and the staff members you have you will become the #1 company out there.

I had to wait 3 weeks to get my first Dyno-Thane ball in but it was worth the wait.  I had the pro shop drill this ball using the standard #2 Storm layout because I was looking for something to run the 3 arrow out to about the 8 board (a tophat banger).  This ball fits the bill perfectly.  It is very readable and it holds the line much longer and consistently than any ball I've ever had.  It doesn't get squirrely on carry down and it has super carry.  I really like the length on this ball.  On heavier oil, it holds and releases like a dream and on drier conditions, I just speed it up a tad and get the same pocket pounding results.  I have been struggling with a pinched nerve for the last couple of months so I'm not in perfect throwing form but I don't have to work this ball hard to tear up the rack.
I'll post again later after I get some more games on the ball but so far it is a real banger.  I like a ball that hits as advertised.

This ball makes me want to run out and try the Element.

Great ball from Dynothane. I have to admit that the reason I wanted to try it was to see if what was said about the coverstock was true.

I was pleasantly suprised to see that is ball is AWESOME!

I bowl on a variety of conditions, but have primarily used this ball on heavy oil 15-15 tapered out to 6 and 43 ft in length.

This patteren lets The THING shine. By far this ball has the strongest backend reaction of any ball I have ever thrown. I thought the Freak Out had an incredible move in the back, and it does, but it is still about 4 boards shy of the Thing.

I can see this ball being much stronger sanded, but I like it so much that I cannot get myself to change the surface. The hit is strong.....not overly strong, but it keeps the pins LOW which is where they do the most damage.

There is so much I love about this ball it is hard to list them all. It has great controll, which is awesome with such a strong backend...and it extrememly readable. Definately the first ball out of my bag. I can use it on anything from med-light to light heavy. BUT I do have to be able to find a lightly oiled or dry area. It is not great in the heavy stuff with the box surface.

Everyone should have one of these. If you dont, you are missing out.

Drilled up for Length. This ball goes long and then explodes to the pocket with pin crushing force. I have an element for oily lane conditions and needed a ball for dryer lanes. The thing fills the gap for me. I play in a summer league with syn lanes. They don't oil the lanes as much in this league as they do in fall league, and all my equipment just wont get far enough down the lanes. The thing gets me down lane, and saves all its energy for the backend where it makes it move. A strong one and kills the pocket. the carry is awsome also.  I had a few high and light hits that fell all night long.
Shot games of 231-212-228 and a 197... Not bad for out of box play.
Bottom line.......... Get one of these before they are all gone.
Dynothane is making some of the best ball's out right now and you should take advantage of it...          Lefty5

Got it today. 15lb, drilled with one ounce top weight, balanced otherwise. Drilled for control.

Used it on synthetic lanes, medium oil with some carry down, slight wall, typical burned out house shot.

This ball was intended for medium oil conditions:

Tested the ball at a variety of ball speeds and axis tilt. In all cases it was controllable and predictable with a strong but controlled back end move.

Up the five board, and completely in the dry, it went long and made a strong arc to the pocket. It showed no sign of burning up too early with enough speed on the ball. It retained enough energy to blow out the rack when it hit.

Playing it across the lane and into the wall gave a very nice skid followed by a surprising sharp flip and drive towards the pocket. This same reaction held across the 10, 12 1/2, 15, 18, and 20 boards - though the ball was clearly the wrong choice for the quantity of oil remaining in the center of the lane.

Conclusion: FIVE STARS. My new favorite ball...Control and surprising power. With the drill pattern my driller selected the ball responds to what I do to it, rather than taking off on it's own.  Great ball, great layout.

Note: Drilled by "Gary" at Starlight Lanes, Reno, Nevada.

Unbelievable!!!! This ball is incredible. I drilled mine 4x4 with a weight hole on my PAP. Also drilled my Thing returns the same, no weight hole. Bowled on a fresh house pattern 42 feet. I was able to play real straight with this one and the pins had no chance when it hit the pocket. This ball cleared the front very well for me and made a controlled arc to the pocket, not very skid flippy. I was able to play further out than I usually do and really create a lot of area. This ball in incredible, I have never had a ball hit so hard, even better than my Vendetta Particle. This ball is a must have. You will be amazed at how well this ball gets the corners out. As stated before, this ball will not give you that real hard snap on the back, but even better, a nice controlled move towards the pocket and than watch out this ball is gonna carry.

Drilled one for a customer today, over the label with the pin under the ring finger. He has been leaving a lot of corners in the past couple of weeks and I reccomended this ball for him. I was right. His response was one of pure happiness. He got most of the corners out and said the reaction was incredible. Asked him for his honest opinion and he said this was the best ball he has bought in a long time. He was very happy when he left the shop. I watched him throw a few and saw that he was getting that nice controlled reaction to the pocket without that snappy over and under that some of the other balls give you. I was overly impressed with the way he was kicking out those ten pins that had been killing his scores for the past couple of weeks.

Great ball Dyno-Thane.

I'm very impressed with this skid/roll Dyno-thane ball.  Drilled mine with the cg slightly negative just away from my palm, and the 3 1/2" pin at about 1:30 from the cg just outside of my palm in the positive side.

The Thing is a pretty big hooking ball as it is the ultimate skid/roll bowling ball.  It hits very well and is quite predictable at the break point.  I really enjoy taking my hand out of this ball a bit and playing straighter with it, as it doesn't lose any hit that way at all and allows me to play easier angles.  I've played deeper with this ball, but when I get around 4th arrow or deeper, I try to keep it inside as opposed to banking the gutter.  It doesn't bank off the gutter at big angles really well.  That is, the ball doesn't carry as well that way.

The Thing is for sure my go-to ball right now.  This is my second Dyno-thane ball, and I'm looking forward to my third one!!!

A 95%

UPDATE:  I have to change a lil something here.  As more games have been put on this ball, the better it works when I swing the gutter.  I originally said it wasn't that great for swinging the lane, but know I think otherwise.  It turns out, swinging the gutter is the strength of the Thing.  I still love this ball!!!

This is the best ball on the market. Mine is pin over the middle of the bridge with the cg on the midline about 2" right of center with a 6" hole. I won a SR ALLSTAR tournament with this ball, and last night start with the front 17. This  ball flat-out carries. Smoothe thru the heads, and never seems to over react makes the ball easy to use. I can play outside, and inside and never loose any hitting power. First ball out of the bag. jimensminger

After having not thrown any dyno-thane balls before, I was quite disapointed with this one. You'd think a ball with a "soaker" coverstock would be better for oil. Or at least would be good to pickup some spilled beer or something *yuck yuck*.

Drilled it left handed leverage. Left handed drills always work the best for me, they roll smoother. I put the pin over the tip of the ball, CG below. It rolls like it's round, but doesn't grab that much on the tails.

Overall, I'd say I would have rather bought a new toaster oven. Mine is sort of teweaked.

Right hander with a left handed drill.  2.5 inch pin below the middle finger.  Great dry lane ball.  Burnt out heads, will kill this ball.  Which makes this ball only acceptable for light oil houses, or for medium conditions with lots of revs on it.  As my first Dynothane ball, it was very good, the carry was great, but is really condition specific.
Title: Re: Thing
Post by: jjtop12 on December 23, 2003, 10:49:50 AM
This is my go-to ball.

I have the pin just above and outside the ring finger.  I wanted this ball to play up the boards, as I've found that to be the best carry angle at my house.  I've left the ball in box finish.

This ball works best for me when I can take some hand out of it and play between 5 and 10 with good ball speed.  The lanes are set up pretty consistently with medium oil between 10 and 10, but the backends are fairly slick compared to other houses I've bowled at.

I love the way this ball hits.  I am also very impressed with the consistent reaction.  The only bad comments I have are that the ball needs to be maintained a bit, with the soaker coverstock it takes up a bit of oil.  Also, when the lanes dry up, don't try to swing this ball.  There are better choices for the swing shot.

Overall I give this ball a 9.5 and I can't wait to get my hands on an Anomaly for wet conditions.  Great job Dyno-Thane.

The most versatile ball on the market today.

I have one Dynothane Thing in my arsenal, and one is all I need.

Just for reference, I am a high speed (18-19mph) cranker. My Thing is drilled 5 1/2 x 5, with the pin directly above the bridge and the CG below the ring finger, placing the mass bias in the strong flip position.

The Thing by Dynothane is just an incredible ball. Phil needs to be congratulated for such a masterpiece. My Thing will skid through the heads cleanly, rev strongly and smoothly in the midlane, and arc hard on the backend. It works on clean backends and carrydown alike. Dry heads require left to right projection to get the ball down the lane, but as long as there isn't heavy carrydown, have no fear, the ball will get back. Oil in the heads allows for straighter trajectory up the boards. Oh, and the hit is great as well. Not overpowering, like my Inferno, but sneaky hard, as it carries perfectly, keeping the pins low. All in all, this ball allowed me to cut out two of my Infernos out of my bag, as I use this ball on anything from light to medium/heavy oil. Only the extremes are out of reach for this ball. As a result of my success with this ball, my last Inferno will soon be leaving my bag and be replaced by a Dynothane Element. I turn the ball too much for an Anomaly. Great job, Phil and Dynothane, as I'm sure you already know. And PS - I have, because of my success with this ball, convinced 10 people into buying Dynothane equipment who otherwise wouldn't have tried it.

All I can say about this ball is WOW.  My first Dyno-thane ball I have ever thrown.  Can say will not be my last.  Was very impressed the way it cleared the heads, rolled in the midlane and how hard it finished.  Well lets go back a step and say that I was bowling on synthetic lanes oiled 40 ft. buffed to 46.  Ball had 3.2 oz of top weight pin 2-2 1/2 out used drilling #2.  I am sure I will update this review after I get a few more games on it.
I played the first game thru the middle did have a bit of trouble recovering but that is what I expected.  Then I moved and played 17 to 8 and shot 259 leaving 3 nine pins.

about as close to a 10 as possible
way to go Dyno-thane

I picked-up this used 15lb red/blue swirl pin demolisher from a fellow Ballreviews member, as I’ve wanted to try a ball with the soaker coverstock. WOW, WOW, WOW! It’s drilled 3 3/8 with a weight hole on the PAP. This ball MOVES and HITS! It’s very clean through the heads, starts to rev HARD in the mids (good length), and just explodes on the backend. This WILL destroy pins! I like that it keeps the pins low, so I get ‘extra terrestrial pin carry’ just like it says it does.  It sends pins flying left and right, I think they cry after they get hit…LOL I can play my preferred line (20 out to 10) with good length and a STRONG roll on the back, crushing the pins. I did notice that if the cover starts to loose its polish (1500), I get sort of a strange reaction. With this one, I can come straight up the back or give it side roll, it likes both. Will leave ringing 10’s if you push it past its breakpoint (What ball won’t?). It’s such a cool looking ball too! I can’t say enough good things about it! I’ve been bowling my highest games with both the Thing and Element.

Some points about it:

Make sure to pay attention to the coverstock surface.

You can come straight up the back or give it side roll, it likes both.

Really cool looking!

Soaker coverstock does exactly what it says it does.

I could see this ball fitting in anyone’s bag.

Got this used from JPRLane 1 (great seller) and the ball is fairly awesome. Specs:

15lbs
drilled pin under ring, cg kicked toward axis
Box finish

I haven't put too many games on this one yet, but I am as impressed with the early indications as I've ever been with any ball, my beloved buzzsaws included. I tested the Thing on each of the PBA patterns, and the ball delivers very well on each, which is even more impressive when considering that it was not meant for some of those shots. The Thing delivers some good natural length and strong, controlled backend. With simple changes in hand position and line you can use this one up the boards or to open up the lanes with silly backend. It ignores carrydown, provided it isn't too heavy, and it sends pins flying everywhere. I haven't tried this ball on a THS, but, from what I've seen on the tougher patterns, the ball is going to be simply sick on it. This ball will be the first out of my bag, and it should find a spot in yours as well.

Until this one I never threw much Dyno-Thane equipment but I was very happy with the results. This is one that everyone should have in their bag, I drilled this one up with a 10:30 layout and put the balance hole at 7". The ball pushes with ease and doesn't over react when and if you hit the dry too early, tried it on a few of the tour patterns and got the same clean result on each and every pattern. I really think with a stronger layout this could be one of the best ones out today.

This is an excellent ball fron DT.  The idea of the 1/2 solid, 1/2 pearl cover is well demonstrated in the reaction you get from The Thing - midlane recovery and backend punch.  The Thing is great on pretty much all mediums, and would probably be good in oil for slower speeds and some surface change.

I've put in games on ball 1 on pretty much every surface and condition you can think of.  I literally threw it everywhere, league, tournaments, practice, you name it.  Its like the Inferno or V2 ball of the DT Lineup.  Good midlane, good backend, excellent hit.  What more do you need?

Ball 2 I just drilled up, and it will be a keeper.  It has more midlane recovery and good roll on the backend, just the difference you expect from pin high to pin low balls.  Definitely another ball you should look into if you can, before they discontinue it.
