Drilling for Thing
« on: December 07, 2003, 04:54:56 AM »
I just got my Thing in yesterday.  I ordered a Thing Returns but The Thing came by mistake.  I am thinking about keeping it, as pearls haven,t been good to me.  I have an Element (dull) with pin and cg stacked next to ring finger.  If I leave the Thing shined and drill it the same way will it be enough difference in reaction.  I really like the Element in a polished state but want to keep it for heavier oil.  I have a high track (Pap is near 6").  Both of the houses I bowl in have dry backends and settle down a bit after the 1st game.  The ball has a 4" pin and 2.82 tw.  I am also considering layout #4 but with a 2 1/2 to 3" pin  location with cg in grip.    I want the ball to be less hook than my Element and smooth out the dry  backends, and  still work in carry down.   If not, the Element handles carry down well.  Any opinions will be appreciated.

I have mine drilled 4.5x4.5 with the pin below ring -- which for my pap tilts the CG slightly left.  With your high track I would be leery of going much more than that.  As a matter of performance, you should drill it for as much flare as you can handle while giving the drill length.  For both the Thing and Thing Returns, I think that a 3.75x5 or 3.5x5ish drill pattern provides the best mix of length and movement.  My Thing Returns is drilled 3.5x5.5 and that seems to provide the best reaction.  When I drill up my next Thing, I am certain I will use this same pattern.

Thanks Phillip Marlowe,  3.5 X 5.5 is close to what I was thimking.  If it turns out to be too strong, I will polish my element, since I prefer it that way and dull the Thing. What do you think about a Returns as a light oil ball, without drilling the guts out of it?

The Thing Returns is too strong to be a light oil ball.  You would be better off with a Vendetta polished for length or, for really light oil, a Barrage.  IMHO, the Thing Returns is better on crowns, tapers and sport conditions, while the Thing is better on overblocked lanes/hard wet dries.  The Element...well, lets just say I like it alot so long as there is enough oil for it to get through the heads.

Already drilled when I got it. Would adding a weight hole increase the flare and perhaps a better reaction?

Depends on where you put the weight hole:
- on your PAP will generally reduce the ball's overall reaction and smooth it out (you generally don't want to to do this with a Thing, as it's already a smooth reacting ball.)
- 2"+ past your PAP will add reaction to the ball and make it flare more.
- 3" directly below your PAP, will also add reaction, make it flare earlier and hook more overall. (This is safe, when you have enough thumb weight & side weight, because, being below the midline, it will remove side weight and thumb weight, just to keep it legal.)

Thanks Charlest: any suggestion on best hole size

not really. Depends more  on how much weight you want to remove.
Brunswick's general suggestions are to always use the same size, for consistency's sake. My personal preference, when putting it on or past the PAP, is to only go as deep as necessary, so as not to alter the core more than necessary.
