Elixir Pearl
« on: July 17, 2003, 03:33:07 AM »
Just picked up one of these nib.
Drilled it pin next to and slightly above ring finger with the cg kicked way out.
I've rolled about 6 games with it and so far I'm disapointed. I was expecting a pretty aggressive ball with the strong core and a pearl particle shell. Ball gets good length but doesn't have much backend unless the backends are really dry. The ball doesn't like carrydown at all. It just never gets into a roll. I tried a little scotch brite on it and it was better but still rolled late. It is ok on clean back ends but I have other balls I like better on this condition. I wonder if the drilling has something to do with it. My new release is a bit of a spinner. I track right next to the middle finger and an inch and a half from the thumb. Plenty of revs and hook but on heavy oil with carrydown the ball isn't getting into a roll. I wonder if it is the ball or I just need to try different pin positions with a spinner release???

It's a highly polished pearl. How aggressive could it be, particle or resin? As a polished pearl, it needs dry to make its move; it is a high flaring core and most people experience a good sized hook with it. That high pin position is going to add to its length.

"The ball doesn't like carrydown at all."
Not a surprise with a polished pearl, particle or not.

"on heavy oil with carrydown"
Most solid particles have trouble with that; not sure why you expect a polished pearl to handle that condition.
May I sincerely suggest a newer Vendetta Partile solid to cope with this lane condition, with strong pin position, say 4" from PAP, and online between ring and PAP and CG kicked out in the neighbor hood of 2.5-3" from PAP.

"Cranker speed with stoker revs" makes this ball even harder to get into a roll.

Did someone suggest this ball for heavy oil? My friend has one and even with his high track, and the pin is above the ring finger, the ball is wonderful on medium conditions; stronger than his low RG, resin pearl drilled stacked leverage. I'd suggest trying it on a medium oil pattern.

I am in the process of chaning my style. I have switched to a no thumb release and really rev up the ball. It has been a challenge keeping a power groove reactve on the right side of the the head pin on medium oil. On longer patterns with carrydown the ball still hooks plenty but makes its move to late for good control. I figured the lower rg and higher differential along with the particle pearl cover would help the Elixir Pearl make its move earlier than the power groove or Rhino FXI (which is a scream/r with a polished powerkoil 17 cover). To my chagrin the Elixir Pearl is the weakest of the balls on oil and the strongest on the dry. This really limits its usefullness. I didn't expect this ball to be a swamp monster but I did expect this ball to be the strongest of my current 3 balls. Oh well. Live and learn
