ELEMENT AU 79????????
« on: April 25, 2005, 12:06:05 AM »
My AU 79 is drilled pretty strong and it suffers alot in carrydown, but when the backends are cleans this ball is very jerky. I use The Thing Lives for med-heavy oil, and use the AU 79 for Med Oil. If I was to dull the the surface of the AU 79 do you think that would make the ball overall smoother from start to finish?

Since it is a highly polished pearl/solid combo, there's little surprise that carrydown can affect it so strongly.

Since the coverstock is Soaker, it can be a little grabby (especially because of the high RG differential and the accompanying high amount of flare). A friend warned me about that; so, I drilled mine fairly weak, with the pin above the middle of the bridge and the CG kicked out about 1.5" from the grip line. It still hooks quite  bit on medium oil.

The jerky reaction might be an inappropriate drilling + ball surface combination. A slight dulling of the ball surface should help.

If you chose to dull the surface, like with a hand sanding of a grey (800 grit) nylon pad, I'd suggest doing it in stages, starting with the track. Then try it to see what your reaction will be. Hand sand a little more, then check the reaction for several frames, ON a practice lane with an oil pattern similar to where you will be using this ball.

I think you may NOT want to dull the entire surface to as low as 800 - 1000 grit. If you did that, it would probably overlap too much with your Thing Lives OR it may just grab too early.

Another option is to sand it to some very fine level, like 1500 or 2000 grit overall, with a spinner and sandpaper or abralon. Then check the ball reaction.

The cover is resin; so, you can take it up and down, polish and sand fairly easily. Good Luck.

The Layout is 4 1/2 X 5, stacked drilling. For what I have noticed so far the Element seems to be a good ball, but seems to be more lane specific, where as my The Thing Lives seems to be more versatile. I was thinking about trying to make the Element more of a Med-Heavy Oil ball by sanding down to about 600 grit dulled and polishing The Thing Lives for more of a Med Oil ball since it seems to be more versatile. Do you think my sanding the Element AU 79 to 600 grit it would be able to handle the Carry down eventhough it is a Pearl/Solid combo, I am open to any advice from any bowler thanks.

I would leave the Thing Lives in its current position, mostly because its coverstock is supposed to be slightly stronger than the "base" level of Soaker on the AU79. Its correct position in a line-up would normally be the TL for heavier oil than the AU79, but exchanging them by changing the surfaces is possible, as a last resort.

To the other buy, if I lightly scuff it with a green pad, do you think it will overlap with The Thing Lives?

I reversed my TL and AU79 surfaces with success before... Originally I had a label leverage on the TL (3in pin-to-pap) and a Stacked Leverage w/pitched out balance hole on the AU79, both in box finish... The polished TL was fun to watch flip harder but it overlapped with another ball I had so I brought it back to box finish. However, knocking the AU down to the TL finish gives me good carry down recovery with that drill pattern and balance hole orientation. Now if if I need forward roll to carry I have a TL and if I need continuation the AU79... My favorite Medium to Medium Oily combo... I RARELY throw it through the breakpoint so my 6-ball arsenal revolves around these 2 balls... I add an oiler, 2 dry and a spare... Choices based on Intel/Recon of the house I am going to...

I dulled the Element AU 79 with a Green Pad and what a difference it made, the ball was smooth in the heads, strong mid lane, Powerful Arc on the back, not snappy. I am going to use the AU 79 for Med-Heavy and TTL for Med Oil, what a nice 1-2 punch
