New guy, how's this arsenal?
« on: July 09, 2004, 05:17:25 AM »
I'm interested to hear from everybody, but I'd really like to hear what new guy has to say about this. Here is what I've got:

Blade Particle (on the way, not drilled yet)
Diesel Particle Pearl (Box) drilled pin under ring, cg kicked right
Anomaly (Polished) drilled stacked
Au79 (Box) drilled stacked, pin slightly below ring
Thing (Box) drilled label
Thing Returns (Box) drilled pin above and between fingers
XXXL (Box) Stacked

I'm trying to make as well-rounded of an arsenal as possible. Check my profile for specs on me. Any suggestions and comments are welcome. Thanks!

Gene,

A few general comments:
1. do you really expect newguy to comment on Hammer and Lane#1 balls?
2. your selection of both Elements and both Things leaves you wide open for tons of overlap in oil coverage and ball path possibilities. It can be avoided through precise drillings and surface modifications, I guess ....
3. there's an apparent hole you can drive a Truck through between the TR and the XXXL.

Charlest,

Well, I felt that it would be good to list all of my equipment so that people could get the whole picture. All of my primary balls are DT, seeing as how the Blade Particle is my heavy, heavy ball and the XXXL is a spare ball. I guess if newguy has a problem because there are other balls listed, I can re-post and only list the DT stuff. I don't take him to be that sensitive about the matter. I'm sure he realizes that people do use other manufacturers. Anyhow, I no longer have the orginal Element, and I've updated my profile to reflect that. The balls listed above are what I've got. I do agree, however, with the idea that I may be a little under-equipped for light. I think that the TR, with my style and speed, will work on most of the lighter shots that I face, although I realize that it will move quite a bit if I play it that way. However, considering that the Au79 should keep me pretty equipped for most mediums, maybe I should ditch the Thing and pick up something like a Barrage. Any thoughts? I'm still not sure how the Diesel Particle Pearl fits in. It seems to shine on tighter shots when the heads are going but there is some juice down the lane. Plus, I shot 765 with it last year in its first full league set, so I don't really feel like unloading that one just yet. Anyhow, let me know any other opinions you have. Thanks for the input thus far!

Gene,

I hope you weren't offended; I can tend to be too brutal with the truth.
A few more opinions ---
+ The Anomaly and the Blade Particle may overlap in oil handling, but they will show you different ball paths.
+ Yes, I think the Thing and the AU79 may also cover similar oil amounts, but they will probably also show you different balls paths, with the AU79 having a stronger backend.
+ The Barrage is a great addition for an all around arsenal. With your release, I'd suggest a strong drilling (doesn't make a huge difference with the Barrage's modified pancake core, but it makes some difference) but I'd also suggest polishing a degree more than box. That worked very well with mine.

(I loved the IDEA of the Diesel Particle Pearl so much that I bought a 16 lb one, when I was using 16 lb-ers, but I never drilled it. I'm back with 15 lb balls; so there it sits.)

My personal preference is to always have one or more control balls in my mix; I'm not sure where you'd place one or which one it might be, for your arsenal. I am not sure how you feel about them, also. Maybe a Vendetta Black or a Vendetta red/black original sanded to 1000 or 1500 grit matte, with a 3x3 drilling or some such. Where it would fit in, is another question.

Thanks for the reply, New guy. Like I told Charlest, I wasn't really looking for you to comment on the stuff from the other manufacturers, I just wanted you to know what I had in those particular arsenal slots. I figured that would save you the trouble of suggesting balls for them. Thanks again.

I guess what Charlest was saying was how would I know the performance of some of the competitors balls, it would be impossible to keep up with the amount of launches. I can only comment on the D/T product line intelligently.

No offense intended, newguy.
I had thought in a previous post, 6-12 months back or so, you had declined to comment on other manufacturers' balls, and quite correctly in my humble opinion. Besides, it is virtually impossible to offer an informed on opinion on all the balls out there. The number gets more insane every day.

Gene, while you have gotten comments from new guy and Charlest, two of the best, let me suggest that you probably don't have the best drills on some of your equipment for what is described as your style on your profile. This is not about your pro shop, but the interface of the equipment you have with a stroker style.  The Thing and Thing returns are mediumish flare balls.  As a stroker, what you need is length plus reaction -- i.e., equipment that gets through the heads and saves energy for the back.  The Thing and Thing Returns should probably be drilled for more flare and with the CG closer to the grip center line, more in a 1:30 configuration, as should probably the Diesel particle pearl.  I say this because I think I have a few more revs than you do and find that the lower flare, earlier roll drilling make it difficult for me when a tame down the ball or come directly off the back to get the best reaction.  The Anomaly is fine as should be the AU79.  I do think you will find that this arsenal is pretty arcy, there doesn't seem to be anything really flippy in it, which means that you need to insure you have a couple of balls drilled CG in palm and pin out toward 3.375-4 from the PAP.  Of course that is just my opinion, and I could be wrong...but I don't think so.
