Thing Drilling

I have a Thing on the way.  15#, 4" pin, 3.3 oz top.  My specs are in my profile.

I looked at Dynothane's page and the drillings listed.  Is there anything special about the ball where I need to use these, or will the standard 2 piece ball drillings apply?  I was thinking of putting the pin at 4.5" from my PAP (above, a little right of my ring ringer) and the CG kicked a little right to put the (assumed) MB right of the thumb in the strong position.

How does this ball handle carrydown?  I am hoping it will do good on at least medium oil with moderate carrdown.  The heads generally hold up good.

Not sure I can help a lot more beyond the comments (almost a review) in the Thing thread on the DT forum. With my 2" pin-to-CG and 4x4 drilling, it's an extremely even ball on medium oil patterns (tried it again today, 7/18/03) but significantly stronger on medium light patterns. With my hand I thought the box cover would be, should have been good for medium conditions. It's good, but barely.

With your 4" pin (quite long), I think you should put the pin at least at 4", because it doesn't have a lot of flare (RG Diff of .040). Place the Mb wherever you feel comfortable for your game. ALso with the 4" pin you *might* be able to cover more oil than my 2" pin; hard to judge that.

Carrydown with this ball is a function more of your hand and the surface. Again, you possibly might be able to handle more with the flare of that 4" pin; I haven't been able to handle a lot with the box cover, just a little, and I can usually handle moderate carrydown.

I have about 10-15 games on this ball but it's supposed to get stronger with use. So don't make any snap judgements. I'll wait until I get 40+ games on it until I post a review.

Thanks Charlest.  I had already read your comments and the reviews on the site.  I knew you hadn't used yours much at the time.  I thought you (or others) might have had more games on it by now.  I had heard that the ball tends to get stronger with age.  Maybe it just seems that way because it doesn't go through the "new ball performance reduction"?  Some people don't do formal reviews but will give experience when asked.  I was hoping Phil might make some comments.  Maybe he'll see this Monday.

I've got about 10+ games on it now and I notice no change in the amount of hook nor its length, but when it does "break in" I do expect a reduction in its natural length. I am getting used to being more precise in my delivery and when I practiced with it yesterday, Friday, 7/18, I did get slightly more "firm" hit when I hit the pocket. But that might have been because I was trying to insure a good strong release, without over-revving it.

10 games are not many; Like some of the older cars (1970-1990) when you used to need 10,000 - 15,000 miles on them to get your best economy AND your best acceleration, I suspect the Thing needs about 20-25 games, if "break-in" is truly required. We will see.

Thanks for the follow up.  I have a friend who I didn't know was registered here.  He'll have it with him on Monday, so I'll get to see how it reacts for him.  I don't know how it's drilled, but I'm familliar with his game.  Similar revs, maybe a little more speed and side turn than me.  At least I'll get an idea of how strong to drill mine.

Good; keep us informed. I wonder if my experience is unusual or I should blame it on my short pin (1.75").

Bump for Phil.

Saw a frind throw it tonight.  I don't know his PAP, but it had the pin right beside his ring finger and the CG just right of stacked.  Looks like a lot of natural length and a hard arc.  I'm looking for more midlane, so I'll kick the CG more to the right.  4.25 x 2?

If you take a scotch brite and hit the ball lightly you will notice that you get a better recovery on carry down. ou may even take the soaker cover down a bit and then lightly polish it back up..
