Title: Playmaker
Post by: admin on December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM
# Coverstock: GB 10.7
# Color: Black/Purple/Silver Pearl All colors do vary somewhat from the picture shown.
# Core: VII
# RG Rating (Actual): 16# - 2.45 15# -2.45 14# - 2.44
# Differential (Actual): 16# - .046 15# - .051 14# - .058
# Length: scale of 1-50 (Least to Most): 24
# Hook Potential: scale of 1-50 (Least to Most): 39
# Recommended Lane Condition: Medium to Heavy Oil

# Description: The Playmaker combines two of the most popular features of recent history, the core of the VII and the cover of The One... The Playmaker is a pearlized version of the Gamebreaker. The Playmaker will provide greater length out of the box vs. the Gamebreaker while still providing a strong mid-lane roll with backend continuation.

This great release from Ebonite is amazing for the medium to slightly more than medium depending on your release. I have mine pin above ring finger, which is similar to my Gamebreaker. The Playmaker goes longer, but it has a little more at the break point. A great addition to the Gamebreaker and a good go to ball when the Gamebreaker is a little too much! If you think that this ball is a V2 Pearl, it's not! The V2 pearl was a ball designed for light to medium oil and the Playmaker isn't a light oil ball, the coverstock is stronger than the V2 pearl! Just my $.02, Bruce

I was very impressed with the gamebreaker and was very eager to see the reaction that i get from the playmaker.
specs:
rev dominant tweener, rh, high tracker, pap- 5 3/16 X 1/2^ ,15-16 mph
playmaker:
2oz tw, 2" pin, ----O-O----
                ------P----
                -----CG----
                -----O-----

Impression:
I kept it at oob and is much more angular than the solid counter part, but stayed true by not snapping off of the breakpoint. This ball has a very good midlane read w/ a strong and predictable move. Now i decided to take it to 1k w/ some polish and that "was what the doctor ordered" skids through the heads very easily and gave me a stronger move off the BP that i much prefer. So far its coming close to be my favorite pearl ( at top is the Absolute Inferno). The coverstock is quite versatile and if you pleased with the look u recieved w/ the gamebreaker the playmaker will not disappoint u.

This ball was an great add on to my game. I was looking for a ball that doesn't skid to much and can be drilled to go long and have a great effect when it fliped and hit the pocket. The playmaker did that and more. With only four games with the ball I only had two splits, total and only one of the splits was just me throwing it bad. The ball has great carry on the pins and gives you great control over where you want to place the ball.

My first game I shot 235 with two opens which was great!
I will post more when I have more games with the ball but so far so good.

I bought this for the wife as she used to love her Vortex sanded but could not locate one when she changed from 12 to 14 pound balls. Had it drilled 5x3 with the pin over the bridge. She only throws 12.5 mph and has a 160 ave. This ball works well for her.
Clean through the heads it picks up a late roll then snaps hard. On med conditions this ball is great for her. She finally broke 500 this year(not first time ever, lol) and is looking for 550 to 600 anytime.

Rev rate: ~375
Ball Speed: ~16 through pin deck (~20 off hand)
Layout: 5.5 x 5 (Pin Above bridge) (No weight hole)
Surface: Box
Expectations: To be angular on Medium oil or shorter patterns

Impression:

I got exactly what I wanted. On medium and shorter patterns, this ball jumps off the backend and continues through the pin deck. Carry is great. This continues as I move my feet left. When I miss left a pinch, the ball is able to hold the pocket but it does not dgive me much left because of how strong the ball is off the dry. This ball is not a skid/snap ball because it is able to read the mids better than most balls that gets angular off the dry.

I compare this ball to my sanded 1000 BW Perl but with a different shape in that they cover about the same boards. This ball is stonger that the Venom both in other all hook and off the dry.

Ball Weight - 15lb

DRILL PATTERN

RICO

BOWLER STYLE
Rev Rate - not sure of rev rate, but I am medium/high rev player
Ball Speed - 18mph

SURFACE PREPARATION
Grit - OOB
Type (Matte, Polish, Sanded) - Polished

LANE CONDITION
Length - Very Good
Volume - Medium Heavy
Type (Wall, Xmas Tree, Sport) - THS

BALL REACTION
Length - Very good length even on some burnt up heads
Back End - surprising back end reaction with the RICO layout, almost snappy.
Overall Hook - About average
Midlane Read -very little
Breakpoint Shape - angular to snappy

COMMENTS
Carry - excellent, left very few corners
Likes - excellent lenght but very good recovery. I can get way in to 25 and swing it without an issue.
Dislikes - None at the present time

Overall, I am very impressed with the PLAYMAKER. I don't know if it's the RICO drilling (thanks NOVA) or just the characteristics of the ball, but it gets great length with good back end action. I wouldn't use it on an extreme flood, but medium to med heavy this ball should really shine! Also thanks to Damon at Ebonite!!

right hander
15 lb
pin above ring finger
speed apr. 14 mph

this is my first ebonite ball. I am amased how it reacts through out the
lane. I dont throw a lot of ball like some of the super stars out there.
This ball is very predictable. I get a lot of messengers, man the reaction
its like watching tommy jones ball reaction.

I just purchased this ball about a month ago. This is the first Ebonite ball I have had in about 8 years. This ball works great... I have a very high rev rate and alot of speed. The shot I throw the most on a house pattern is around 25-10 give or take some. I am right handed and drilled this ball with the pin directly above my middle finger and cg in the center of my grip. Ball is drilled very tame and yet still turns hard and hits even harder. I love the reaction i get out of this ball. Lots of energy.

I bought the Playmaker at the start of the season so i have had plenty of time to use this ball on various condidtions. Layout is 45x4.5x60. Layed it out to give me something for the THS around my area. At first I was very very disappointed with the ball. With it coming 4000 polished and with the lay out i got a lot of over under reaction. so after playing around with the cover... took polish off still was not impressed. Then went to 2000 and that seemed to be alot better and gave me the reaction that i was looking for. Clean through the heads and very good even midlane rid with smooth and controllable breack in the back end. At 2000 this ball really came alive for me...

Overall impression
To condidtion specific at oob but with surface prep and little time. This ball really earned a place in my bag. So at 2000 sanded.. Length... 7.5-8 Midlane 8 overall hook 8.

Overall i would said this would be a very good benchmark ball for alot of people but dont be afraid to play with the surface...

I pulled this ball back out this week so that I could compare it to my One Pearl on our league condition. To my surprise I put a 300, 258, 244 - 802 at one of the more demanding (condition wise) Bowl America's in Northern Virginia.

Layout:
Pin to PAP: 5 1/4
Pin to CG: 5

Dual Angles:
Drill Angle: 65
VAL Angle: 45

This ball is very predictable and very controllable. Compared to the One Pearl which was/is much stronger at the break point. Both are very clean through the fronts. The Playmaker has worked well on low volume conditions and drier patterns. I have been very pleased with this ball.

I just drilled this ball with the pin above the ring finger, I had been debating on which new Ebonite ball to get this year since I have been pretty well stocked.  So I chose the PLAYMAKER, and I'm glad I did! I threw it in a tournament for the first time and very pleased with the reaction.  The shot was medium oil and the ball did great, easy to control with a powerful backend, if you have the GAMEBREAKER and have done well with it, you'll absolutely LOVE the PLAYMAKER!

This ball is amazing. I just got it Wednesday from Beans and Wow! I don't rev hardly at all, but i could get around the ball and this ball will finish hard at the end. This ball works great for me, and I think is one of the best balls I've had. My average is a 174 with the Emerald Vibe, but when I  got this ball, my games have been better, and I'm hoping my average will start going up soon. I bowl a 200 almost everytime with this ball!
Amazing!

Placed the pin 4" from PAP and kicked CG out 2 in from center line. Took cover down to 2000 and shined with ebonite shine. All I can say is WOW, this ball hits. The ball very clean up front, I was able to get deep and get the ball to the right quick will little effort. (I am a tweener) The ball will recover, no matter how deep I got the ball recovered as long as I did not over throw it. I kept my release clean and soft and shot 300 after 3 games on the ball. This ball is a must for any bowler.

The Playmaker is one of the four balls I recently got punched up and after not throwing ebonite gear since the One first came out (not the remake One) I must say I have been missing out on some great bowling equipment.

I have a great look on the dry to burnt patterns with the Playmaker and I enjoy the smooth reaction it gives me on the dry to drier patterns is where this ball shines the most.

I choose to keep the Playmaker shiny and when I throw it on heavier patterns it hangs in the oil until it finds enough friction to turn over if it turns over at all, its not meant for heavier patterns in my opinion. Im my opinion the Playmaker is a great ball to have in your bag for those med dry to dry patterns.

Great reaction.
Great price.
Awesome ball.

Ebonite Playmaker - 15lbs

Pin to CG Distance - 3"

Topweight - 3 oz

Layout - Pin Over Ring Finger - CG slightly out

Ball Reaction - Skid/Flip

Comments:

I have to admit that I never got the opportunity to quite firgure this ball out all the way.  Unfortunately, it met an early end when it cracked all the way around within 3 months of purchase.  What I can say is that it was definitely a skid flip monster that got through the front part of the lane better than any low RG ball I've ever seen.  This ball was definitely going to be at home playing in the track area to deep inside angles and was not a ball that you would try to play up 5 with.  I tried to play out with it several times at difference surface finishes and it just didn't work.  Had most success with it deep inside.  In the end, I wish it wouldn't of cracked because I would've found a way to make it work and after it cracked, I decided to go another way with the replacement.

16 lbs
3 inch pin to CG
Pin located just below figure holes
4.25 ounces of top weight

I love the ball. Just shot 298 in Postal/Federal Tourney and it was one of the weirdest lane conditions. Lot of low scores for anyone with high revs like myself. The Playmaker gave me a good roll on the lane and finished great all weekend. On heavier oil it does get erratic tho. If you're pretty accurate at hitting you mark (which I'm not, I need area) you should be good on any lane condition with this ball. Pick one up if you like Ebonite. It's a definite must have.

1 week later and 20 games with this ball and I'm very pleased with this ball. I threw an 11 bagger twice , 2 750+ series and my lowest game has been a 212 . This ball hits harder for me than any of my other balls and seems to be hooking as it hits the pocket. this ball doesnt just roll out or flatten out. I do believe the way it was drilled is playing a role in my better performance. Im a novice on drilling and CG(whatever that means) and pin placement , blah blah blah. i just know the ball is comfortable on my hand and hits hard @ the pocket. Also i bowled those 20 games @ 3 different houses and having success.

This ball is proving to be my strongest ball , I finally got to roll on a Pro shot and a Chameleon pattern. Last week i was throwing My uprising SE , my Virual Energy and the Playmaker and I threw my 1st 300 with the Playmaker. the ball hits harder than every ball i own. I love this ball. If you are a stroker and like to play down and in , I highly reccomend this ball.

last week I purchased a new Playmaker and its proven to be the best ball Ive ever had . I had it drilled to go long with 1/4 inch thumb reverse pitch and  1/4 inch forward finger tip pitch. first 3 games 257 , 299 (9 pin grrrr), 217 . This ball hits harder than every bowl i have (VG,VE ,Evolve , Bedlam and Second Dimension) . I actually have video of the 300 i threw with my 1st Playmaker and video with this new one. ill upload it soon. Great Ball, great pin action , very predictable .

I have one of these myself and it's a great ball for the average house shot.   I had some success on the pro conditions but only the lighter one's.  The shark, chemileon, scorpion were trouble.  playing outside along the gutter was kinda alright but not to consistant on the back end.  the lighter patterns like the viper and the cheetah were great shot for the playmaker.
Mine is drilled pin up with stacked in the palm, so it's pretty neutral.  I have most success on house shots that are medium light to medium heavy.  Sounds contradictory but it's the flatness on the pro heavy shot that hurt the reaction, and on heavy house shots most are lighter on the edges.
I like this ball but it's not the best I've thrown.  Not too versital but I really haven't changed the factory cover much, I like the polished finish better and the shelf appeal.

I've owned this ball for about a year, and for that year it has been the first ball out of my bag where ever I go.My Playmaker is drilled pin over ring finger to maximize it's backend reaction. The Playmaker is easy to get through the first part of the lane, begins roll in the midlane, and has a strong ,but predictable motion on the backend with good continuation through the pins.I just purchased another Playmaker on Ebay to replace mine.(It's starting to show it's age,and the number of games on it.) If you can get your hands on one, I highly recommend this ball.
