Title: ***NEW VIDEO - THE ONLY ONE***
Post by: Jeff Ussery on December 13, 2006, 04:07:44 AM
Okay, so yesterday while I was shooting SmashTime Pearl videos for all you, I was able to get some other vids done, and have finished putting this together.  I think it will explain how I really feel about a couple of the balls in my bag!

Click on "View All Media" and open "The Only One" video.  Not so instructional or comparative, but definitely emotionally attaching!

Let me know what you think!

It's tough to tell from these angles.  For my game, the biggest differences between these two balls is in the length of the breakpoint.

I'm working on the typo as well.  Should be fixed in a few.

Thanks!

The One is just a pinch longer and slightly smoother at the breakpoint.  The coverstock veneer isn't quite as aggressive, so it's a slight bit weaker.  Great balls to have one of each drilled the same way and use them in league/tournament play!

I'm really suprised that your shallow angle One reacts that way. I though it would stand up and smother the sweeping hook more. What was the intention for that ball in your arsenal was for if the backends tightened up?

Hey there Lefty,

Which One ball are you asking about?  I'll be glad to clear anything up.

I hope to get my hands on an Angular One someday. The look of that ball is great, and it just DRIVES.

Jeff- Are you bowling team challenge Sat. or Sun. in Lawrence? We'll be down there Saturday. What's the shot like lately?

It was pretty soft today.  I'm not bowling this weekend, but good luck!  I'd recommend playing anywhere from 3rd to 5th arrow, peaking the ball around the 9th-11th boards.  Anywhere outside of that, and it just doesn't hook.  Good luck!

Jeff sorry for being vague. Noting the drill patterns on the "ones"  from the video. I was wondering why you drilled the 10 degree pattern and what was that to accomplish? Although you have lots of axis i still have never seen a under 45 degree push and bend that much for a high tracker. Would the lower (10 degree pattern) be for carrydown or tighter backends.  Also have you used any "0" degree drill patterns and your thoughts?

Thanks,
LHT

leftehh- LG -

I don't know of anywhere to get patches only.  All of Ebonite's shirts are custom embroidered, and I've not seen patches before.  If they're available anywhere, they're at www.bowltowin.com.  Hammer items are available at www.hammerstuff.com.

Leftyhi-trak,

I hope I'm understanding the question right, so I'll just go for it.  In the "Only One" video, there are two One balls.  One with a 70 degree layout which is fairly long, quick at the breakpoint, and more of a "prototypical" bowling ball reaction.  There is also a 25 degree layout ball with a small weight hole.  This ball rolls considerably earlier and is much smoother at the breakpoint than the first ball.  You'll see that the ball is also sanded lightly to 2000 grit Abralon.

I think you're asking about the SmashTime Pearl that I drilled with the 10 degree layout.  I chose this layout because many times I like to see balls that get to the breakpoint, make their move, and than roll straighter in the backend.  All of my friends tell me that I like to see a different type of ball reaction than most.  We all have our natural shot that we like to see, or the shot that "fits" our eye.  And typically when we get a ball that doesn't fit our eye, we tend to either not throw it, or even get rid of it.  Even though the ball may accomplish the goal in mind.

With that SmashTime Pearl, I was trying to create a ball with a smoother breakpoint that read the lane earlier than your typical pearlized ball.  And I'll say that I succeeded with this ball.  I think you'll agree that the ball is soft off of the dry, and appears easy to control the pocket.

The lane condition in mind with regards to this ball reaction is actually shorter patterns, lane conditions with quick wet to dry transitions, and instances where I need to play straighter launch angles.  By getting the pin lower and using a moderately aggressive pin position (for my game), I was able to create a ball that did this.  You'll notice that the SmashTime really labors when I get it into the heavier oil, and I have several other Ebonite balls that are far better at playing these angles.

Hopefully I've answered the question you had.  If not, please be sure to let me know.  I operate the Pro Shop Help Desk Hotline from Powerhouse Training Clinics, so it truthfully is part of my "job" to help you guys (and ladies) with all of these questions, concerns, and issues.  Thanks again, and Bowl to Win!
