Omega Lion Info
« on: November 16, 2005, 05:26:48 AM »
Hey Everyone,

I am trying to find out some information on the old green Omega Lion that Ebonite produced back in 1996. A friend of mine has one and I just wnated to compare it to something newer for a replacement and possible counterpart for our shot, 37' medium oil top hat squecky clean backends. He has been having a lot of problems when the lanes dry out. Him, speed about 14-15 med-high revs but can be inconsistant on hitting his mark (hasn't bowled league in 4-5 years). A local proshop suggested an Element Ice for him and I have suggested possibly a Crossfire as a compliment for him.

Thanks for any input that you may have.

Let me know what you think.

Mike

I'd say it depends...

If you're looking to mimic the reaction that the Omega Lion was designed for in its time(assymetrical with a strong backend), then I'd look at something like The One or Big Time Pearl.

If you're looking for something to mimic the reaction that the Omega Lion has on todays conditions, I'd look at a resin with a lengthy cover.  Maybe something like the Fire or Crossfire would suit you well.

I posted this topic a long time ago and need the info again. It appears that I can't see the post that were added.

Can anyone please give me any ifo on the Omega Lion (ex. RG Diff, Coverstock, any experience with it)?

Thanks,
Mike

something like this:

At least gives a photo of the core.  Looks like it may be a moderately strong core... The cover was reactive pearl..and being from 1996, it would likely be considered very "mild" by today's standards.  I would say that the ball would be nice on drier league shots or just when other equipment is over reacting.

Ahhhhh, the mighty Lion!!! lets see now...Very different responses to different drillings, that core was strong, a bit too much for the shell if anything, didnt like carrydown. Could create a bit too much angle in the back 20 ft sometimes and ring a lot of 10 pins. I've had 2 of these over the last 9 yrs. The first one with a skid/flip layout, then plugged and redrilled with the earliest rolling layout on the sheet. The 2nd one i drilled Axis/leverage. So they all had leverage pin positions but moving the mega strong mass bias around changed the balls balls reaction a lot. Interested to know what layout he has on it. Not the most forgiving ball ever made, like all the Omegas it doesnt hold pocket real well(not with the drillings i've had on them anyway) This ball either works or it doesnt, no real half measures with it. But when it's 'on' you wont find much that can hang with it, even after 10 yrs.

Well the drill pattern that is currently on it is the pin is directely below the bridge with the cg (guessing the Omega symbol) kicked left a little towards the track. Looks like a 105° or 130° drill pattern. It is a light ball around 13-14lbs and has a 1 to 1-1/2" pin. Just wondering if it is worth fixing the cracked finger area for using no thumb until my thumb heals. I would drill it with the pin way right of the ring finger because no thumb I track over the fingers so right now the pin would be in the track. I have thrown it a couple times as is and it did scream on the backend even at 16.5 mph at the pins. Just not sure it is worth the $25 to get it fixed, even the cover has seen better days.

Thanks,
Mike

OK Kalannar, can you tell me which letter on the drillers clock is pointing straight up, i've got the drillsheet around somewhere still so i can tell you from that what layout it has. Might have a practice with mine Friday, just for fun!!!

I haven't checked which letter is pointing up yet but it is probably a moot point anyway. I started looking the ball over more closely and it seems that the entire area around the grip is starting to shatter. You can see spider web cracks all over the place around the grip. I don't believe it is worth saving. I would have to have plug work done in a 3" radius all the way around the pin. That ends up being about a quarter of the ball. Just not worth it.

Thanks for all the information on it.

Adrian,

I just looked at the drill pattern on it and the pin is directly below the bridge and in between the E and F is pointing straight up. the Omega symbol is down to the left at about a 45° angle from the pin. There is also the small clear pin that is below and to the left of the thumb hole about 15° off the grip line. It looks to be about a 1" to 1-1/2" pin. I looked at the ball this morning and now it doesn't seem to be cracked as bad as I thought it was a couple of weeks ago. Maybe I was really tired when I looked at it last. So, if you could get me those drilling options that would be great.

Thanks,
Mike
