amateur tips

I am relatively new to looking at my hook potential with my ball.  I have NitroR2, got it a number of years ago at Reno 1998.  I've had the ball plugged and redrilled twice for a full roller, and when the heads get messy later in the night it just doesn't want to move.  I want more hook with my release, but need a tip.  I try to clean it regularly using Neo-tac Renew It, and I have had it resurfaced before each of the last two league seasons.  I only bowl one league, but wonder if I should get away from the finish that it came out of the box with.  If so, what's the best way to do that without taking it to my pro shop?
