I just picked me up an NVS
« on: August 04, 2007, 03:46:31 AM »
I went to the Ebonite Factory in Hopkinsville, Ky, about 3 hours from here. While I was there, I happened to pick myself up an NVS, 15lb, 2-3", 3oz top. This will be the first ebonite I have thrown in 5 or 6 years since my V2 Sweet. . .
It looks nice, very promising. Will drill it up today and let all know how it goes. Will try and include pics if possible.

Thanks,
Chrispy

Well after throwing it a few times, I will go ahead and give everyone a mini review.

Drilled pin up(directly between both ring/middle), Cg in palm.

First off, the colors on this ball are great going down the lanes, with the gold/red swirl.
On the lanes, a 38ft THS, the ball was very aggressive. The only playable line was to swing it wayyy out past first arrow. That line would result in a solid pocket hit. The ball seemed to grab the dry early and take off, resulting in a lot of brooklyns. Playing straighter between 1st and 2nd arrow resulted in the same thing- the ball snapped very hard and crossed over.
Carry was spectacular though, with pins flying everywhere, very few times did I leave a 10 pin or anything else. 4 pins either went down instantly or were tripped from behind almost every time.
After throwing it on a house shot, I had a tourny that had a 43ft sport shot pattern layed out. The NVS was a shoe in, since there was a little more oil, it made more line playable. Still very angular off the breakpoint, it matched up superbly.

Bottom line, The ball needs some oil to be playable, or else you are gonna have to swing it way out.

Overall, I would give it a 9 out of 10, as I havent seen this much hook in a ball besides my Fury.

Thanks for reading,
Chrispy

From what I had read on the NVS it was even stronger than the TNV, and after seeing people throw that..the only question I could ask is...who on earth would need more ball than the TNV?

The one thing that is good though about polished pearl reactives being strong is that they are playable on a wider variety of shots than solid sanded reactives.  They tend to be strong to the point where you have to move deep, but since the strength is predominantly on the backend, carry keeps up as you get deep.  Sanded solid reactives, especially when they are symmetrical have difficulty when one bumps in.

Not to hyjack the post, but something sort of popped into my head when examining the core statistics of the one and nv series.  If you look at the ones, the one, big one, and infinite one all used solid shells.  The angular was the first and only one with a pearlized shell.  They then went to the nv series with nothing but pearls so far.  The core that is in the nv's has a lower mass bias differential than the one core design.  It seems to me like they came out with the angular thought that the ball was too jumpy and then decided that if they were to make pearls in the future that they would have to keep the core a bit smoother.

This would seemingly be supported by the way they put the gb 11.2 pearl shell in the rxs300, and decided to put the gb 12.7 pearl in the raid.  They have a smoother core design and match it up with flippier covers.  In keeping with this, I'd expect them not to hesitate to insert the traxion covers into the raid series, and I'd also expect that they would perform a serious modification to the spike core design prior to coming out with a solid sanded coverstock in the nv series.

ChrispyBrownies,

What was the surface preparation of the ball when you threw it first? Have you altered the surface yet? I am just curious.

I just threw mine yesterday. This is ridiculously strong. I don't think I'll ever be able to use it. My Total NV is strong enough. LOL.

Throw some extra polish on it to make it go longer. That's what I have done.. It's a good rolling ball.
