Mission - First Impressions
« on: February 20, 2010, 07:03:47 AM »
Alrighty folks, I went ahead and got myself a Mission.  My first Ebonite ball ever.  Woooo, it's dreaaaammmyyy!  As some of you may have read, my Storm Gravity Shift cracked and died  I didn't like the looks of the Virtual Energy, or the Invasion, so I went with a Mission.  Why?  From the videos and telecasts I saw, the Mission reminded me of the Gravity Shift - reads the lane in the mids very well, and reacts hard but controllable on the backends.

First, my bowling stats:  I am a stroker with ~275 RPMs, average around 16MPH at the pin deck.  My PAP is 4 and 3/16 over, and 3/8 up.

Now, the ball:  I got the ball drilled 4 inches pin to PAP, 4 inches MB to PAP, with a 1 inch pin buffer from my VAL.  This put the pin at about 2:00 from my ring finger (righty bowler).  No weight hole needed.

I compared the out of box Mission to my second Gravity Shift, which is drilled for a lot of control.  What I wanted from the Mission is more length, and backend hook.  What I got was exactly that, and then some.  The Mission had this amazing tendency to float through the heads for me, and read the mids without hooking.  It was exactly what I wanted.  The backend motion is unbelievable in how it turns over, and just wants to keep going left even after it hits the pins.  The carry is out of this world too.

Compared to my pin down Gravity Shift, on the same lane, the Mission gets down the lane noticeably further, and has a very similar backend reaction.  Since one picks up a lot earlier than the other, comparing overall hook to me seems almost useless, but I would say the Mission can cover a good 3 or 4 more boards overall.  Not a ton, but enough for me to open up the lane when I need to step inside.

One thing I didn't like was when I polished it.  The ball got WAY too squirty in the backends, and sometimes it just didn't even pick up the lane at all.  So I went back down to 2000 and blew up the pins again.

That's all I've got for now.  I think that the best part about the Mission is the ability to read dry but not over-react.  For my game, that's the #1 thing I want, and boy oh boy did I ever get that.

Once I get more experience with it and tinker with surfaces, I'll post more.
