Coverstock Adjustments on Gamebreaker.
« on: September 18, 2008, 02:28:35 AM »
I finally got my new Gamebreaker drilled Tuesday (9-16). I know that I will have to throw it a bit to determine if anything needs to be done to change coverstock. I just want some input from others that have made coverstock changes to their gamebreaker should I find the need to have to adjust mine.

I only had time after drilling to throw 7-8 balls as I had to be elsewhere shortly. The lane conditions were used just after my senior league had finished. (lanes were stripped & fresh oiled at start of league) The line I normally play which is just inside the oil line was perfect for my Playmaker, but not oily enough for my Gamebreaker. I am not a move left and swing the ball out style bowler due to my low revs and 15-16 mph speed. Surprisingly, I was however able to do that a bit with the Gamebreaker and the ball came back to the pocket beautifully. The problem though was that the hit was a dull thud and poor pin mix/carry and not the loud clap and astonishing pin mix/carry that my Playmaker made.

Ok, now I know that the Gamebreaker was the wrong ball for that condition and that even though it showed no signs of rolling out, it hadn't retained any energy by the time it got to the pin deck. However, after I try it for awhile, if it still appears it may need some surface adjustment, what type adjustments have others made to their Gamebreaker?.... Polish it without changing coverstock???....Sand to 4000 grit Abralon and no polish???....Sand it to a ? grit and polish???....etc.

I have seen people use shined Gamebreakers with success.  The balls appeared to be at 4000 abralon without polish.  For me, the Gamebreaker rolled better dull, at 1000 abralon.

If it was me, I'd leave it right out the box and continue to use the playmaker.  Only when the playmaker wiggles downlane and doesn't make the turn, would I throw the gamebreaker.  All of my stronger balls, I hardly use unless I feel the need to.  If you go to a different house where there is more oil, the gamebreaker should be more effective.  You don't want two balls that do the same thing.  Hope it helps!

Brick,
Just apply factory finish to the OOB surface and it will give you the little extra pop you are looking for.

For me, the ball hit like a marshmallow at any surface.

The only time I've seen the ball hit like a marshmellow is when I thru it with ZERO lift/fingers, any lift at all and the Gamebreaker hits like a Mak truck.
I have found OOB finish just fine for any condition so far just have to adjust speed and angle.

This is my intentions and is the reason I added the Gamebreaker to my arsenal, but was posting my topic on it to get an idea of what to try in case I still needed to adjust the cover to compliment my Playmaker.

I used the Gamebreaker for the first 2 games in our Senior's get together where 8-10 of us get together every Thursday to pot bowl. I won the second game pot with the Gamebreaker today. It seemed to roll better today with some usage on it, then again some of it may have been the lanes.

One big plus for me on this ball is that it is the first ball I have ever owned where I could move left a bit and throw it out right more than usual for me and not have to worry about it coming back to the pocket as it will come back every time without fail and without rolling out. Due to my low revs, other balls will not finish for me from this angle, but the Gamebreaker does.

Its kinda hard to say to adjust the cover or not.  After some usage of the ball and getting to know how it reads the lane, you should then choose to adjust the cover if need be.  I would continue using it oob and if it doesn't produce the look that you want, adjust the cover then.  My $0.02
