Total NV on the way
« on: January 31, 2007, 04:47:25 PM »
Bit the bullet, and placed an order for the TNV.  It should be in tomorrow or Friday.  Sooner is always better than later.

Anyways...here's my "dilemma".  As of late I have been stuggling to find a "benchmark ball / layout"  I've tried various layouts and equipment and have been satisfied.  They all work great, and I have no issues, just that none of them give me a "secure feeling" of what the lanes are like.  I got the AO recently, and it's been working great on the "stronger" stuff at the house, and The One for the "weaker" stuff.  I've been working on just adjusting to the changing shot because recently, I've taken a lot of crap for having too much equipment in the eyes of some big-headed house hacks.  I used to bring 3 plus a spare with me to the lanes...but I found myself adjusting off the One or the AO, and stopped lugging around the excess weight of another ball.  Nevertheless, I've been wanting something to fit in between the two...and I think the TNV might be up to the task.

So here's the dilemma, part of me wants to go with the standard pin over bridge, mb in strong layout I've grown comfortable with.  Part of me wants to go crazy and try a "trick layout" just to see what I can do.  You can blame Ebonite marketing, and Jeff for that.

Anyways...after reading into such layouts (4 1/2 in pin to pap / 75deg mb), on paper it seems to be the reaction I am looking for.  Only thing I am hesitant about is that I sure don't have the abilities of the pros and don't want it to be a flop.  Again...you can blame Ebonite's fine print for spooking me.

Play it safe, or broaden my horizons?  Thoughts please.

You should definitely take a look at the video I've put together for my Total NVs:

Not that we throw the balls alike, but you may get an idea to the reaciton characteristics and the differences in layouts.  Good luck!

I just dropped mine off at the proshop today and he's going to do the trick layout and hit the cover with 4000 for me.

Can't wait to get it in my hands and on the lane!

Jeff-Yup, checked out your videos this morning.  Great stuff!  Only thing is, I was like another member here that wanted to see some videos with you playing straighter angles.  Nevertheless, it gave me a great input as to how the ball reacts.

JMorris-I definitely am looking forward to your review.  I will be looking for both yours and Jeff's reviews.

Fatboy8-I posted this topic Wed. night.

As it stands now, I'm leaning towarder the "bolder" route.  Going to call the proshop in another 90 mins to see what came in the delivery, can't wait!

....must be one of those left coasters..!

Your benchmark ball needs to be the drilling that best suits the condition that you'll encounter with the most frequency.  If you've had a particular reaction in the past that you've liked, run with that one and see how it works.  You can alwys tweak the coverstock or add a fourth hole to fine tune the reaction afterwards.

230-n-up-or-bust:  Yup, representing the west sid!  I understand what you are saying with the usual layout/look.  I've been using that method, but as of late the house I bowl at alters their quarterly on league nights, and daily during open play.

I mentioned I'd been using a 5 1/2 in, mb in strong layout as of late.  It gives me the look I want.  The problem being that sometimes I get a lot of over/under.  Especially on pearl balls.   I started messing with other layouts have been able to get a lot out of just a two ball arsenal.

The trick layout I want try is supposedly smooth off the breakpoint, and deals well with over / under conditions and goes long.  Basically it fits what I am looking for.  The only thing that scares me is that I have no idea what this layout does in  the hands of a player with a lower rev rate and speed.  That and the fact that my ball driller highly recommends NEVER placing the MB abve the thumbline.

I went ahead and tried a "modified" trick layout.

Pin is 5 1/2 in from PAP, MB at 75degrees.  Pin approx 1 1/2 in from my VAL.  X-hole 4 over and 2 up to remove excess finger weight.

I really can't describe the reaction at all.  Other than it clears the heads, revs up and the breakpoint and just sort "smoothly snaps" over.

In short I absolutely love it.  This ball has easily become my favorite/benchmark ball.  It is about 3-4 boards weaker than my Angular One w/dulled cover, and about 4-5 boards stronger than my The One.

I love mine with that layout too!  Strong, yet controllable!  I shot 246 with an open, the only game I've got to bowl with mine, so far.  I can't wait for my league night this week!
