I KILLED MY MISSION, but.....
« on: April 12, 2010, 05:42:48 AM »
was able to get it back, thank goodness.

Got the ball with a 2000ab finish on it, but that was quite strong, so I decided to put a light polish job on it. Helped it greatly, but it was still pretty strong, so I put a heavy polish job on it.

Ball went straight, blew right through the breakpoint, and hit the 6 pin square in the face. Moved my feet 5 right (I'm a righty) but again, the ball missed the breakpoint. Now, I'm lined up playing down and in over the ten board, but the ball hit very weakly, deflected badly, and left me the 8-10 split.

Still thinking it must be ME, I continued to throw it. Two frames later, it hits weakly, deflects badly, and leaves me the 5-7 split. That was enough, so I put it away.

After league was over, I hit it with a 4000ab pad, but it had little effect, so I went into the shop and used their degreaser to remove the polish, then hit it with a fresh 4000ab pad. This seemed to do the trick.

Now, it is just a couple boards milder than before, but it does read the breakpoint, and it does have that "hit" back that it had before.

Moral of this story is, careful with the polish on this ball. It seemed to make more difference on this ball than anything else I've messed with lately, and can actually turn this ball into a spare ball if you're not careful.

I find that green scotbrite is great for removing any polish and then can be sanded to any grit right after that.

Better late than never advice:
When you get these balls with P2000 & P4000 grit matte finishes and they're still too early, buy another ball. (Sorry, wrong topic )
I mean, don't put polish directly right over the stock surface, especially if you're using an abrasive polish OR you intend to put a heavy coat on it.
I'd strongly suggest first taking the surface down to around 600 grit US/Cami (green nylon pad) or P1000 grit (Abalon or Siaair) first.

If you insist on putting the polish over the stock surface, do it by hand and do it very lightly until just barely begin to see a shine.

You can always do more. It's often hard to go backwards, without re-doing the entire ball, and taking large chunk of surface off it, giving you less to "play with" in the future.

My Mission developed a lane shine after about 30 games or so (kept it at box finish).  After that, it has lost some hook and I have not been able to restore it to its original finish using abralon and my spinner.  I have a couple of other Missions NIB that I used for visual comparison purposes.  Maybe I need to place it in a Haus...I don''t know.

A bowler brought one into the shop the other night and it was a little lane shined, approx 30-40 games on it and we just hit it with some ball cleaner and a 2000 pad on the spinner and brought it right back. Ball hadn't lost much hook but the appearance changed, after the trip on the spinner it was looking and still reacting like new.

I'll be monitoring mine closely, its only got 10 games on it but i'll keep and eye on it as well but i'm not too concerned as i've had pretty good luck with the Ebonite made stuff just by using regular recommended maintenance.

After about 30 games mine also got a "lane shine" on it.  My pro shop used a Haus machine to restore it back into the OOB surface and it worked fine.  In preparation for a tournament over the weekend, I used a scotch brite with clean-n-dull and it dulled it nicely as well.

If you heavy polish any high end ball it is going to lose some of its reaction if you just hit it was abralon on top of the polish...you have to take it all the way down to 500 and then back up via ebonites specs

Strange.  I always wiped the ball after every shot with a microfiber towel dampened with Remedy Rx and cleaned it with Clean ''N Dull on my spinner after every set.  I tried hitting it with the 2000 abralon pad for 45 seconds on all six sides and although it looked a bit duller, it was still a ways off from the NIB Missions that I have.  Maybe I should have done the complete 500, 1000, 2000 resurface...

Try cleaning it with Clean and Dull, without the spinner, using the old Track instructions. C&D has always removed any lane shine on any of my bowling balls.

If you don't have the original instructions, try this:
- put some C&D, about a quarter size onto a Bounty (or other strong) paper towel.
- rub the top half of the ball with it, while it's sitting in the spinner's ball cup, in a circular motion around the side of the ball. This should rotate the cup slowly so that you're covering fresh surface for each circular swipe.
- keep the top half of the ball wet for about 60 - 90 seconds.
- use a wet paper towel to clean off the C&D.
- use a dry paper towel to dry the ball.
- do the bottom half of the ball.

Well, I intended playing with the surface, especially after I tried it at 2000ab, which was too much surface here for me.

I let the shop put a LIGHT coat of polish over the 2000ab finish and it was still strong, but nice. I was hoping adding heavier polish would give me the length (it did), but still let it "pop" on the backend (which it did not).

Taking the polish off, leaving the surface smooth, then putting the 4000ab directly over that seemed to do the trick.

After I did this, I went back to the same pair I had struggled to get a reaction on, and watched this thing just shred racks and never missed the breakpoint. After having 200 be my high league game with it polished, I proceeded to shoot a 236 game almost effortlessly after removing the polish and adding the 4000ab.

What is it they always say? Oh yeah, SURFACE, SURFACE, SURFACE! Guess I'll listen next time.

if you wanted the same reaction but a touch more length you could have either just hit it with 4000 or hit it with 1000 then 4000...i hate putting polish on anything, seems to me you can never get a ball back to what it was if you polish it, especially if they really get it hot and burn it in to the cover

And that's EXACTLY what he did. I guess I got a little bit lucky, getting the results I was looking for by accident. At least now I know that a sheened 4000ab finish works right for the shot here.

I don't have a Mission but I did the same thing, seemed to kill my Gargoyle and Crimson with too much polish.

Hopefully after the trip to the shop the surfaces are back to normal.

Took the GG up from 500, 1000, 2000, 3000 and polish (OOB is 1500grit polished)

Took the CE up from 500, 1000, 2000 and polish for a bit stronger rolling ball.
