Title: Need some help/advice please.
Post by: thedjs on March 01, 2022, 04:02:19 PM
The house I bowl in has three conditions:  medium dry, dry and DRY.  I have been using an Ebonite Turbo R which works well for me and has allowed me to play several lines.  Yesterday I noticed it has a small crack between the thumb and fingers which will probably get worse.  I hope the pro-shop can fix it.  However, if they can't, I will want to find a ball on the market now that might be a close replacement.  I saw the Hammer Raw Blue and White which might be close but slightly weaker and the Roto-Grip Hyped Pearl which also would be slightly weaker but might work.  The only other possibility I could find would maybe the GB-4 Pearl and use a long pin to pap and change the surface to maybe 4000 with polish.  If anyone can offer a suggestion I would really appreciate it.

Don't bet on the Hyped Pearl being weaker.

Maybe try a Twist? From what I've seen those are pretty solid options for the dry.

I've thrown the GB4 pearl and will have a video up for Monday.  It is pretty rolly and will be really strong compared to a Turbo R.  I would recommend either the Stellar (high rg hybrid) or Eruption Pearl (slightly weaker core and cover) if you wanted to tame down a midrange ball.

The twist is alright for staying straight in the track on dry lanes, but you may see more options in terms of angles with a Rhino or Raw Hammer (look into the hybrid or shining up a solid as the pearl is a bit squirty).

Get a Beast or Raw Hammer and call it a day.  Core numbers are basically identical and will be very close to the Turbo as far as hook potential.  Dont overthink this.  You are trying to go to a stronger ball on drier conditions and go with a weak drilling.  But you need to understand coverstock is the most important thing.  Even if you go with a 5.5-6 inch pin to PAP, the cover is still going to dig into the friction.  Put the same layout as the Turbo as well.  Raw Hammer or Beast with the layout that is on the Turbo and you should be golden.

Another option that might be good is the Radical Counter Attack

Thanks.  I had forgotten about the Beast.  I think you're right, either the Raw Hammer or the Beast might be the perfect solution.  Thanks again.

Beasts have been put on clearance. the Raw pearl is the "weakest" of the Raw line but the cover is from the Fugitive series and is sensitive to friction. Look for a Beast if you can can find one. The Blue and Purple are Pearls, the others are Hybrids.

Since BowlExpo has completed, take a look at the new Columbia 300 Messenger PowerCORs. There is a Pearl and Solid version. One of these may fit your need and the price point is really nice.

I have tested the new Hammer Ocean Vibe. While going longer than the Raws, it has a quicker response to friction. I'm not sure when you say "Dry" you mean light to no oil the entire length of the lane or the back ends a clean which creates a bigger ball motion later. Personally, I will take the polish off the Ocean Vibe to smooth it out a bit.

Hope this helps.
