picking up a V2 Strong... yay or nea?
« on: October 02, 2003, 07:54:06 AM »
i have been bowling with a messenger Ti pearl. the ball is made to go long and skid thru the heads, with a sharp break for the pocket. the ball is great on medium oil, but as soon as it gets greasy, it will continue skidding and never let the weight block take over.

to make matters worse, i have mild RPMs and the guy who drilled this ball put the pin out further... so it goes even longer. i am now talking with another local pro shop *who i have recieved many recommendations to* and they discovered this about the Ti... as well as the fact that the pitch on my thumb was drilled over a quarter inch too shallow, which was more than likely the reason i squeeze.

so, they watched me roll the ball and found my ball speed and marked the oil track on my ball. i described what form i want the ball to take, and they have assured me i can get it.

i want a more elliptical arc, and not such a loooooooooooooong roll before a quick break @ 40-44 feet. can this be achieved with a V2 strong? i do not have the hard early revs some people have, so i believe that this may help me to keep the ball from reacting so fast. i know the strong likes to hook early... any ideas, thoughts, suggestions?

It's a great ball for oil! I own two laid out differently and they are one of the best balls out for medium to heavy oil.

DonSYO,

This new pro shop sounds like they know what they are doing! Appparently good choice.

If they recommended the V2 Strong, then I would go with their recommendation. If they did not and it's your idea, then be aware that the V2 Sanded is, in the V2 line-up of Ebonite balls, the one that would be the next logical step up from the Messenger Ti in hook and oil handling ability. It is a strong medium to medium-heavy oil ball, while the V2 Strong is medium-heavy to heavy oil ball. (The Messenger Ti really covers medium-light to maybe medium oil.)

If this were your first step up, I would recommend the V2 Sanded (which can be lightly polished, if it does hook too early for you) over the V2 Strong, which is a VERY strong ball. I think both are very close in price so that is not a factor.

Read some of the ball reviews here at ballreviews.com and on http://www.bowlingballreviews.com to compare the two balls.

In the Ebonite line, a nice step up from a Ti Mess would be the Predator Pursuit, a light-load particle ball that's designed to start up fairly early and have an arc-shaped hook.

As charlest said, your new pro shop guys sound like they are, ummmm, on the ball , so I'd get them to recommend the next ball for you.  Although you can make any ball more or less snappy with drillings and surface prep, the Ti Mess pearl is not designed to roll early and evenly, as you already know.

You can try to use one of the guys I bowl with as a test case for this ball.  He throws it straight down the second arrow, slow to medium ball speed, and with a mild amount of rpms.  He likes to let the ball do the work.  We went to an Ebonite demo day and he fell in love with the V2 Strong, picked one up, and has been doing very well on heavy oil with that ball.  Nice arcing-even roll, and even when the backends start drying out, he can stay with that ball alot longer than I can stay with my more aggressive equipment.

I also agree with seadrive that the Predator Pursuit would be another good option in the Ebonite line.
