some questions on XXXcel
« on: August 30, 2006, 12:48:40 PM »
thought of getting that ball, wondering if the ball itself have the characteristic of heavy roll with continuous move into the pocket?

I'm finding a ball which rolls heavy and does not hook and set.

thanks.

Depends how you drill it  If drilled correctly, this could be a great ball for what your looking for.

Might want to surface prep with some rough buff compound to fight against roll out, but sounds good.

Was thinking of Big Time Sanded, but the coverstock is a particle, I doubt I can have the characteristic I want from a ball.

OOB, this ball needs oil and moves a lot. With a high pin position, this one has a really booming back end reaction. With the 800 grit OOB, it reads the lane quite early, so it is suited well for soupy situations, and therefore it makes a rather arcing hook.

But do not get deceived: It is IMHO not a rolly ball by design. The medium MB can be exploited very well. I guess with some shine to the coverstock and a stacked drilling with the MB at 90° from the PAP, this one could also easily be made to flip on the back end. Bring the MB closer to the PAP, and it will rather curve and react smoother, better suited for long and much oil.

I guess a pin-in XXXcel, with the pin under the ring finger and the MB at 45-60° from the PAP (will need an x-hole), OOB surface, should react the way you are looking for.

You might also consider the XXcel. It is the same ball like the XXXcel, just with a light particle load and it comes with a polish OOB. When sanded, the XXcel has a great continuity, IMHO a touch better than the XXXcel because it grips earlier on soup and heavy head oil in this setup. It is, anyway, an alternative to consider. I just cannot tell how different the Big Times are. I guess they do not have that breakpoint "punch" the medium MB in the Scalien core of the Vcel balls provides, I suppose they are a touch smoother and probably even more arcing and earlier in their movement on the lane in a similar setup to the Xcel balls?
