polish questions w/sr300...
« on: January 25, 2007, 01:05:44 PM »
got this ball tuesday...had it drilled for league with the "axis leverage" setup i got with the ball...

the ball looks sexy...i absolutely love the skid/flip reaction....only problem is...i need more length  i was either burying the head pin and winding up with nasty splits or going brooklyn no matter where i moved my feet.  when i did hit the pocket the thing did explode though

i'd rather not have it filled/redrilled, but i will if i have to...i had to order a new bag anyways, so i ordered some ebonite extender polish while i was at it.  i've never used polish before....on a bowling ball  is it just like car polish...rub on...let dry...buff off?  what's all involved?

just wondering if anybody out there has used this combo and what your results were?  thanks for any info

Also like my SR300, but need length, too. GB10.7 is very aggressive - when I play the track area or the heads fall apart, the ball loses energy quickly, despite the higher RG core.

Searching length, I sanded mine witha grey pad, then with 2.000 grit Abralon and hit it with Brunswick High Gloss Polish. From the looks, there is little difference to the OOB finish. But the surface feels definitively less tacky, the ball should move even better through the oil than before.

Haven't used it yet, hopefully tomorrow in training on a short pattern, just to see if it goes better down the lane. I'll post results if I get any.

Since the ball surface calls for 70% of overall ball reaction/performance, it is wise to start here if things are not going your way. Plugging etc. should only be final measures.

BTW: ball polish is NOT car polish. Car polish will seal the ball's surface, clogging the pores which create traction. You will more or less kill a reactive or particle ball with it, on a polyester ball it is fine. I'd always use ball polish or compounds, and a soinner to apply it.

UPDATE: Tried my polished SR300 yesterday on the short oil, and it was a definitive improvement. No burn-out, good length (4'more, I guess) and even control. Not itchy at all, this thing grips like velcro tape.
Got the impression that the breakpoint became even more angular, and the ball left many 10 pins - probably, due to the steep(er) angle. But I like the result, since I wanted to get the ball further away from my S&A. Will try it on a longer pattern next week, looks promising and definitively an option to try!
