What Happened???
« on: September 26, 2008, 01:36:58 AM »
Remember when bowling was about skill?  Yesterday the low scorer on our team threw an Ebonite NVD and kicked our butts.  He’s never hooked a ball like that in his life.  Ebonite balls have too much technology in them.

It is like saying that starting blocks for the 100 meters should be ban and go back to the days of Jesse Owens. Days in which you had to dig with your toes a hole in the ground so you can have a good start. Take away the new swimsuits and do not shave the hairs of your body. Take away the new tennis rackets and go back to tennis rackets made out of wood. Take away the new bats and balls from baseball. Take away the new clubs and balls from golf. Avoid the new knowledge and better physical fitness of today's athletes. You can go on and on in every sport. Progress is inevitable. Unless people wants to continue living in caves.

Doesn't everyone have the right to purchase that same ball. There are going to be days where the low guy is going to beat the upper guys but its not going to happen often

every company out there are designing balls that can hook with little help thats just the way the game has progressed either join in or shut up and get out of the game there is no use complaining yeah bowlers who lack as much talent as others can compete but if ya wont a true test then sack up and take a sport shot

Progress is technology and new skills in using the new technology.

So Tiger Woods does not have skills because he is using the new technology that has been brought into Golf. Michael Phelps and Dara Torres don't have skills because they are using new technology in their swimming. The word easy is relative to the era or place that you have lived and will be living.

So let me see if I have this straight, Dale. You're probably in your late 50's, early 60's, you used to dominate locally back when everyone used urethane and plastic, the improvements in technology have done nothing to improve your game because your game is very simple and you don't have much hand, plus you're too stubborn to change your ways, and you're jealous of all the people that can hook the lane and average 225 while you still plug away at a 195-200 pace regardless of the equipment in your hand.

How'd I do?

If you haven't noticed, this kind of thing happens with all sports.  Technology is helping lower skill levels achieve better scores, but the best are still the best, no matter they are using.  You have to rise to the next level, so stop complaining and practice to make yourself better.

In golf, clubs and balls are allowing people to hit it longer and give more forgiveness in off center hits.  But the pros are still the best cause they can outscore the rest of us no matter what they are hitting.

In baseball you have guys using lighter bats so they can swing harder with less effort and the balls are of higher quality and made much more consistantly.  But again, the pro's would be good hitters no matter what they are swinging with and at.

Yes, technology has helped, but you still have to have the skills to good at the sport, no matter what you are using.

This ball started rolling sometime in the mid 1800s. It was called the Industrial Revolution. Around 1993 or so, it started applying to bowling with the intro of resin coverstocks. What makes you think you can stop now that it affects you?

No the thing that ruined the game of bowling is us!!! When lane people started making the lanes tougher with oil then we started asking for more powerful bowling balls. When the balls got to good for the oil then the oil changed.  Its a cycle people its never goin to stop!! bowling will never be the same, yea ball companies make better stuff than ever but they have no prolbems selling them.  As for the fact that the low man on your team dale had the high score.. IT happens!!! get over it!! This is still a skill sport if it was easy everyone would be on the pro tour averaging 290, but there not!!!

Stikecing you are right on when you said it's on us. If we want to make our sport better we have to change it. It's like NASCAR. When the cars got too good, they put on restrictor plates. The technology and performance of the equipment is too good. We need restrictor plates for the balls.

Restrictor plates were put in place on the certain tracks partly for safety speed vs size of track.  There are already some restrictions similair to what you are asking in place example min and max RG.  What do you want everybody to use plastic or rubber.  If you want to stay in the 60's and 70's of technology there is still candlepin bowling available in some places.  What you are asking is absurd. So Auto Manufacturers should go back to producing cars that only get 8-10 miles a gallon.  The only thing constant in the world today is change.

Bad NASCAR analogy there. The restrictor plates weren't because they were "too good", it was due to safety reasons. They were doing over 200MPH back in the 60s.
