Title: Elite Green Alien problem...
Post by: leftyinsnellville on November 07, 2008, 07:08:09 AM
I picked one of these up at the sale price ($99) and decided to drill it aggressive as I don't have a lot of hand.  Drilled it pin under ring, stacked, pin and cg both 3 and 3/8 from pap.

The balls doesn't do much so I'm presuming that it's burning out, but it sure doesn't look like it is.  I threw my Cell at the same time on a similar line and it held the line and jumped nicely to the pocket.  Has anyone tried polishing this ball?  Perhaps I should try a different layout.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.

bumb just in case those working people didn't get home yet to look at this

If you're saying the layout is 3 and 3/8 from your pap, pin and cg, that a pretty good roll layout so you may just not being seeing hte "flip" that your expecting

I'd shine it. That particular ball is pretty early as I recall with the dull factory finish.

On edit, how far apart are your flare lines?

As a wise man once said on this site, "SURFACE FIRST."

Surface changes can always be reversed, so what the heck?  Give it a try.

"everybody is somebody in snellville"

thats the town motto
look it up if you dont believe me

now on topic

it sounds like the ball has some weight issues
i.e. too much top, side, thumb, bottom

it doesnt soung like the ball is reacting like it should

id get somebody to check it other than the guy who drilled it

the guys in tucker used to be good, but i dont know if they are still the same bunch or not

i also had good luck w/ the guys in conyers ( assuming ) its the same bunch of guys

I drilled it myself.  The specifics on the after drilling weights are:

Gross Weight - 15 lbs. .3 oz.
Top - .8 oz.
Left - .6 oz.
Finger - .6 oz

No weight hole as the ball was within USBC tolerances and I wanted to see how it rolled.  I didn't measure the track flare, but it looked what I would expect for a ball with an aggressive coverstock that's been drilled for maximum flare...I'd guess around 4 inches.

I'll try polishing it with Ebonite's Power House Factory Finish and see what happens.  Maybe a weight hole down and in from my PAP to increase flare a little, but I won't be able to take much out because it's only .4 oz. away from legal limit on the finger weight.

when i have had balls that didnt act right it has usually been that they were out of whack with the weight, and incidentally it was also when i tried an aggressive drill on an aggressive ball.

thats just been my experience

I believe the ball is supposed to be about 800 grit US (edited).

First I would sand it to 4000 Abralon (P4000 = 2000 US). Then try it to see what you get.

Next I would sand it to approx 600 or 800 grit US with a green or a light grey Scotch-Brite nylon pad. Then I'd add some polish, medium gloss, with a non-abrasive polish like Valentino's Snake Oil or other non-abrasive (just so you know the underlying grit level).

Next, I'd go up in sanding level to approx 1200 - 1500 grit US and add a non-abrasive polish again.

Next, I'd complain to the manufacturer. Tell him how it was drilled and which surfaces you tried.

I just got an answer from Elite cutomer service.

The Green Alien is approx 800 grit. That's is US grit level.

So you can polish its stock surface or sand it finer to 2000 grit Abralon (1000 grit US) or 4000 grit Abralon (2000 grit US) for more length.

Me?
I haven't drilled it yet. I have some other concerns I'm battling and I don't want to spoil any new balls by drillign them incorrectly.

I suspect, given the oil I face these days, that I'd either take it up to P3000 or P4000 grit or use a gloss polish on it, when I do drill it, given what people are saying about it right now.
