Hello, I am back again (with my Blue Hammer

) and need some wisdom from ball historians concerning the markings on these old pieces:

a) Is it correct that, despite having a "true" core, the Faball balls only have the bull's eye-shaped CG marking, but no pin? It could be that the pin, if there had been one, was placed in one of the finger holes, but I cannot remember on other older Faball pieces to have seen one? I just want to be sure...

b) If this is the case, am I correct that the pin distance is simply 0", or close by?

Thanks a lot in advance for some enlightenment, I was just wondering.

My ebay specimen is drilled label, the bull's eye marker just in the palm of the previous owner's drilling. I'll probably stick with with it (spans are pretty close to mine) and just have the fingers plugged and adjusted, plus a thumb insert to replace the original thumb hole.

There is no pin. This was said by harrylegthigh in your original post. Do have your driller weight it out so the CG is marked correctly.

There ARE pins on the old hammer balls . They are the same color as the ball and usually located at 1 o'clock from the label. Many were right at the edge of the bullseye. They can be hard to find but they are there.

My blue hammer also has a pin, approx 3" from label.

The pins on old Hammer balls are not of much consequence. Why they are drilled label. It's not like we think of a pin out ball today. I'd treat them like a pin in ball but that's just my opinion.

They did have cores and did have pins. Most pins were within 0-2" and they were the same color as the ball and sometimes difficult to see.

Water was a useful tool for spotting pins on old urethane balls that the pin was the same color as the rest of the ball. Just wipe the ball with a damp rag in the area of the label and it should become more clear.

Guys you are just great!

You are right, the ball HAS a pin, but without your hint I would not have recognized it at all.

Here's a pic of my "new" ball, just as it came with the finger inserts pried out. It has a 1.5" pin, drilled label. When you know what to look out for, you can make out the coverstock-colored pin at 13:30 from the CG marker, its outline as a slightly darker shade:

I have an original Black Hammer with a 6" pin!!! My driller had no clue why my ball flared between 3 and 4 inches...I took it back to him about 5 years ago and we had a good laugh about not realizing what was causing the unnatural ball reaction...

These balls have a pin, but it is the same color and material as the coverstock. It is always located at 45* out from center of "bullseye". Sometimes wetting the cover can make the outline of the pin more visible. I remember going thru the boxes at the distributor looking for those "seconds". I got a red hammer last year with a 4" pin out. They are rare, but out there.

Mine is still "under operation" - I hope to get it back from my pro shop next week, because league starts keep everyone busy around here. But I am looking forward to mine, and I will post a review on it here in the forum, because I want to compare it with more current stuff and see how the Blue Hammer fares.
