Description: Remember the ball reaction that dominated bowling in the 80's and 90's?  Hammer does and they are bringing it back with the Black Hammer Urethane.  Hammer has modified the popular light bulb core to create the LED core design and covered it with a Urethane cover and finished it with a 500 grit Abralon pad.  This combination offers incredible control the length of the lane because you don't always need a violent reaction.

COMMENTS

I was very excited to hear that Hammer was going to release a TRUE Urethane ball, but was a little skeptical as I did not like the re-released Blue Hammer a few years ago. Hammer went to BIG lengths to make sure this release was a true urethane by shutting down the plant and completely flush out the lines of all the resin from other balls. I still have a few of the original urethanes in my tournament arsenal. This new Black Hammer is stronger & is not as sensitive to carrydown as much. The new Black Urethane rolls very close to my original Blue Hammer that I use on the short tournament patterns or when the lanes are really toasty/dry. I loved the lighter hits that I got with this ball that threw the pins around and this ball was very impressive with how it managed the over/under lane patterns that I saw with it.

This ball is perfect for the shorter patterns, lighter volume medium patterns, and for blending out the wet/dry lane patterns. Playing straighter as possible like the older urethanes will help you kick out the corner pins with this ball. Cannot cross a lot of boards with this ball and would suggest that it is important to have the ball pick up the mid-lane so it will be mellow in the backends.

I feel the new Black Hammer Urethane would be a great ball to have in your bag for the league / tournament season when you need something to control the lanes.

Likes: This ball rolls great on short sport patterns and house shots. I used a 60 x 5 1/2 x 40. I was amazed by how smooth this ball rolls and how well it carries. You have to keep your angles tighter with this ball, doesn't cover a ton of boards. I feel like this is a must have for a tournament bag!!

Dislikes:Very shot specific

Ive been waiting for this ball for a long time and finally got the chance to punch one up. To say Im beyond satisfied would be an understatement. I used this ball for the first time to test it out on a typical house shot. I was able to move into the track area after there had been some play and boy was I shocked. The ball seemed to make a nice clear path thru the heads and what a controlled and readable move off the spot. This wasn't what surprised me though...the ball hit so hard, I would compare its hitting power to that of my reactive pieces, I was beyond astonished, the ball drove thru the pins like no other urethane ball Ive ever thrown. The next opportunity I got to use this ball was on a 42 foot very flat sport pattern at the IB Open in Las Vegas. The lanes were very tricky and after 2 unsuccessful squads using reactive ball I realized i was playing the wrong part of the lane and moved outside with this Urethane Hammer. Well as you can imagine it didn't disappoint, I was able to go up the lane very straight and have such a predictable motion and managed to get to 50 over for the 8 games. Again, the predictability isn't what surprised me it was the way this ball goes thru the pins, its almost amazing for a urethane ball. If you're a tournament bowler I can't stress enough how this ball needs to be in your bag. Same hold true for league bowlers, when the lanes begin to dry up, you won't be disappointed picking this piece up because it will not sacrafice hitting power.

LANE CONDITION

Length: 32ft

Volume: 26.3mL

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc): PBA Wolf

Likes:  Black Hammer (500,1000,2000,3000) – Pin above ring finger and to the right CG in line no x-hole (positive axis point) is 4 3/8 right 1/2 up
Pattern was Fresh PBA Wolf 32ft on Brunswick Anvilane independent bowling center
I was very impressed with how far right I was able to play, I was standing on 7 and able to play right on the 1 and 2 board and the reaction was that early roll but extremely readable throughout the pattern never had to worry about the ball over hooking.  As the night went on in league one lane the oil pattern changed by about five boards.  I moved to 15 looking at 5 at the arrows and the reaction was slightly different, instead of going flush in the 1-3 I was now going light in the 1-3 but I didn’t lose the carry and the reaction stayed predictable.

The Urethane Hammer is a must for all high rev bowlers especially if they bowl on sport patterns. Unlike all the other so called "Urethane" balls on the market, this is a true Urethane bowling ball. This ball picks up early and gives you the old school Urethane look on the back part of the lane.

PAP 5 9/16
Slightly Rev Dominant
Layout #1: 70x6x20 (Pin way up)
Layout #2: 70x5.25x75 (Pin under ring finger)

Many of you know I have been using urethane almost exclusively on patterns less than 45' on a regular basis. It allows me to keep my angles in front of me as long as possible. Once my tools of keeping my angles in front of me are exhausted, this is when you'll find me using resin and opening up angles.

Layout #1 gives me a slightly lower RG look and a faster response to friction, meaning that if the backs are playing tight for my slower-reacting urethane balls, I use this one. However, there is a limit to this as this ball might not save it's energy as well as the pin down ball. If the lane transitions appropriately, I may be lucky enough to move a few boards left in order to belly the ball back right for good pocket hits.

Layout #2 gives me a higher rg and lower diff look. It means it has a slower response to friction and will not flare as much. This ball is  perfect when I need to keep the launch angles straight and that the response to the friction is slow.

My personal preference right now is Layout #2 because it allows me to be aggressive with the hand while keeping the angles straighter for a longer period of time. Layout #1 actually gets the ball going pretty fast and hard, and it is susceptible to responding to the friction too quickly (go high).
