Black Widow
« on: December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM »
Featuring the High Mass Bias Gas Mask core with flip block and Violent Reactive coverstock, the Black Widow goes long and attacks violently on the backend. There''s no lane condition out there that''s safe.

Had my Black Widow for two weeks and have bowled a few series with it.  I had it drilled for the skid flip setup.  This ball has already proved very versatile and I have been able to play both in the track or inside.  The ability of this ball to cover boards depending on hand position and release has just amazed me.  I have been able to move and migrate with this ball and play all night games with it.  High series for me with ball so far 686: 226-225-236.

Only dislike is the coverstock is like a magnet and must be maintained constantly.

Update:  With all of the negative about the ball dying I have continued to have good success with this ball I currently have around 120 games on this ball and had back to back 683-672 series with this ball.  I will admit that this ball will soak up oil but after reading other posts on this site have given it hot water bath after 50 or so games and the reaction comes back to the way it originally acted.  Is continually the first ball out of my bag for most conditions!  "Nothing hits like a Hammer"!!

Ball #2

Layout:
Ball #1
Pin 5 inches from PAP
MB 5 Inches from PAP
Pin under Ring, MB kicked out 2 inches right of thumb

Ball #2
Pin 4-1/2 from PAP
MB 4 inches from PAP
Pin above and right of ring, MB 2-1/2 to 2-3/4 right of thumb
45 degree layout

Old Wood House
38 ft THS
8 to 8 med-heavy concentration
4 to 8 med
4 and out, out of bounds
Backends strip

First i used ball #2. Both balls were 1000 grit abralon. This ball defeinitely reved up fast in the midlane and made a hard left turn on the backend. I was able to open up the lane. I was playing 13 to 8. After a few shots i brought out ball #1. I threw it in the same spot. The ball didn't read the mids okay but at the break point it was more archy. The ball came in light and left the bucket. I tried it again on the same lane and got the same result. At least both balls have separation. I can keep both at different surfaces. This is how i wanted both balls to be. Or if i keep both at the same grit, i can drop down to ball #1 when Ball #2 is over reacting. I need to try both out on a PBA pattern to see how they work. I will keep allof you updated.

Thanks to Brian Graham for the layout suggestions. He is the only brand manager that i know that has great customer service.

I bowled with it for the first time today since it was a Christmas present. The lane I bowled on I don't think was very oily because leagues start at 5:30 and i don't think the lanes had been oiled since 5:30(pm)- Dec.24 because I had to start clear right and I'm right handed. I couldn't loft it out a bit like I usually do with my other balls when its a mediocre THS.

I was using my widow with its out of the box finish (4000 grit)

I had it drilled for layout #2 (all-purpose and high track)

I have to say its not so much a ball that has that pretty flush like many bowlers prefer but maybe thats because its a hammer.

After all "nothing hits like a hammer"

By the way heres my arsenal

Black Widow- pin below ring finger with balance hole
Absolute Inferno- pin right of the ring finger
Solid Zone- pin at a 75 degree angle of ring finger

I have approximately 100 games on my Hammer Black Widow solid (BWS) and this ball helped raise my average almost 8 pins during the 06-07 winter league. Drilled 5x5 with pin over fingers the ball gives decent length with a very aggressive back end reaction. The ball needs some friction with this drilling but my house shot is shorter than most. A very hard hitting ball with superior carry. The ball is a bit sensitive to speed especially when the lanes open up. Definitely not a ball for light conditions especially with the OOB finish. The BWS died on me around the 50 game mark. The cover stock is a real sponge requiring oil to be extracted every 40-50 games to maintain consistency. I've extracted the oil twice using the "bucket technique". I also clean the ball and use a 4000 abralon after each set. After moving to this maintenance schedule the ball remains phenomenal.  The BWS is still my "go to" ball for the medium house shot.

The ball is just like a super aggressive pearl ball.  It really goes long down the lanes and takes a super sharp turn on the backend.  The ball isn't as good in carry down as I thought it would be.  Despite it's termendous length, I would not say this is a ball for a short oil pattern.  This ball will turn uncontrollably on a short pattern.  Use it on the standard 37 to 42 feet oil patterns that you're used to.  It's definitely a medium oil ball because of its length.

1/9/08 Just shot my first 300 with this ball!!  I've been bowling on and off for the last 20 years.  I average between 185 - 190.  I bought my black widow last season.  I had it drilled to go long and snap at the back end.  While I love this ball, I can't use it for all 3 games...so I would suggest you have a backup.

I'm a brunswick guy but I thought sense i've been hearing so much about the backend reaction on this ball I would give it a try. I was very impressed with the reaction I got, this will be one of my go to ball on longer oil patterns. Good job Hammer!

Got this ball in the fall for leauges. I am a stroker with med. speed and med. revs. I wanted a ball that would allow me to play deeper and faster, but still have a good look on the backend. And I'm always (as I'm sure all of you are too) on the look out for a ball with great hit. Well, I got all of these things with the Black Widow. Before I picked one up, I read some of the reviews on this site about this ball and was a little relunctant when people said that this ball craps out after a 100 or so games. But, my guy at the pro shop said that this ball was going to be a classic. And since his suggestion years ago on the V2 black becoming a classic (and he was right), I always pick up the classic candidates. So I pick one up with a 3-4 pin and punch it up stacked with pin over ring, and VWAHLAH! This ball is a monster. I left it with the OOB surface and on a THS it just rolls so smooth through the heads and makes a violent yet predictable move to the 1,3. I've put about 70 games or so on it and the reaction has not yet faded. I haven't shot under 620 since it's purchase and I can't see myself doing so with this ball. One thing about this ball, is that you need oil. You really have to pay attention to your transition game, because it will get squirrely if you run it dry. I usually move left on the approach about 3-5 boards a game. Mind you that I line up pretty far right to begin with. Overall, I really like this ball and time will tell if "Classic" is the right moniker, but I suspect it will live up to that title.

I'm not a great bowler. I have won a few tournaments with this ball. I can just say that this ball has a lot of back end hook and I have had this for two years. I use it both left and right handed. I have the pin or the red dot above the two finger holes. I am a Stroker.

I bought this as a very expensive great ball, which it is VERY nice!I used it all the time on both leagues that I'm on,
BUT
Be forewarned............
this is a VERY HIGH MAINTENANCE BALL and USEFUL ONLY FOR A SHORT WHILE.
IF you have $250 to toss away every year then this is the one for you!
It has a VERY SOFT exterior/cover which CHIPS AND CRACKS....regularly!
Now IF you wish to have it recovered, you may at an extra cost,HOWEVER it loses some of that hook EVERY TIME YOU HAVE IT RECOVERED.
I called the bowling lane where I bought it and they said that this is what happens to (with) this ball.I figured it was a defect...however,Rose Bowl Lanes in Newark,NY said this is a regular occurrence with this ball, and to just buy a new one!LOL! I'm not a pro, just a working stiff who can't afford $250 EVERY YEAR! Maybe the newest ones will fare better than this one.???
God bless you and yours!

This is an amazing ball. It is the second ball I have had drilled, and I absolutely love it. As a lefty, low/med rev low/med speed stroker I have had trouble getting the ball to hook into the pocket. The Black Widow fixed that, now the ball snaps into the pocket on the backend and hits hard.

I clean the ball with the Energizer Ball Cleaner once a week, to keep it sharp. With my drilling layout, this ball doesn't have the same arc hook as my Elite Black, so I find myself having to throw it on a straight second dot second arrow line and let it snap into the pocket from there. Overall I am extremely pleased with this ball, it works great and looks good too.

im not that experienced as a bowler im only 17 with 7 years under my belt     i used to throw a track Temper   but once i tried the black widow i fell in love with the ball as soon as it touched the lane.  as i throw the ball more and more i come to realize that i have about 7 boards i can play with and the ball will either hold or swing out and still finish for me.    it is the hardest hitting ball i have ever thrown.   since i first started to throw the ball i have increase my average from 180 to about a 220  with my high game at a 279 which i have thrown 5 times

I recently got a Black Widow from my brother, who is a high rev bowler.  I have roughly half the revs he has, and I didn't see me throwing any honor scores with the ball as it was drilled, but I gave it a shot.  As for the exact pin, I'm not sure, but it's pretty far.  It has a skid-flip pattern allowing it to have a lot of distance before snapping on the backend.  The first series I shot with it was 734, and have had really nice results with it ever since.

As another user posted before, this is a very, VERY high maintenance ball.  This ball will become oil-soaked very fast without frequent cleaning.  It wouldn't hurt to have a towel at the ball return and give it a small wipe once in a while either.  After throwing the ball for 2 and a half games every once in a while, it tends to lose power.  If you want a strong ball, but do not mind the extra attention it requires, then try this one out.

Got this ball and iam very impressed with it. Its drilled pin above the bridge but up high. First time using it i shot 257 220 215,692. The next day used it at Chackos 234 238 246 718. Ball is really forgiving. I like this ball so much iam getting another one. Iam getting the other drilled pin above middle finger. I won a tourney with this ball now
