Question for Hammer Gurus!
« on: September 27, 2007, 01:56:22 PM »
This guestion is being posed as an old gezzer. The house I mainly bowl in has gone to to a pretty dry shot after years of oil. I cannot get my polished Overtime down the lane enough without the speed I need without getting tired. Should I drop to 14lb balls, which I have been thinking about, or go to a pearl ball like the Doom for more length and backend at slower speed. Age sucks, and at 48 my bowling seems to have caught up to me. I am a straigter player for the most part(17mph) but seem to be losing power on the drier conditions over many frames. Show should I drop weight, or go to a ball with more length?

Being that you are still throwing it about 17 mph, I would suggest switching to a ball that gets down the lane a little further. 17mph isn't slow by any means. If you're looking at Hammer the Doom/Toxic might be a good choice, but don't overlook the Vibes just becuase they're "entry level." They still make the corner well, and pack a pretty good punch.

An issue with dropping ball weight that many don't consider is this... If you're not throwing 14# any faster than 15# you'll end up with a ball that reads the lane earlier because it loses momentum faster than the 15# ball does.

I would consider both. That way you can maintain the speed that you have(17mph) with a little less effort. Your muscles and joints will thank you as well. Then you get a ball that has the additional lenght. And like Matt said, don't overlook the Vibes. The Cherry will have the added length your looking for. You will also notice a quicker change in direction with the lesser weight.

Toxic or vibes the doom is far from being weak, ebonite bash would be  nice smooth ball also.

If you want a ball that's consistent shot to shot with great length and still a solid backend move, go with the Cherry Vibe. I love mine, but don't always have the condition to use it.

I would not suggest changing weights, you'll end up with a timing issue, maybe, I'd suggest looking at the Cherry Vibe, Bash, Jolt Pearl or the Jazz...even if I do not like the colors they have they are still a ball to consider.

The Toxic might be one but you'd have to drill it weak, IMO, but it's another option.

Good Luck !

Another option is going to one of the Faball urethanes that are NIB on eBay all the time. I have a Red Faball Hammer that is deadly on that type condition. Granted, I dont have to use it much, but I have never shot less than 650 when forced to use it. These old vintage Hammers have performance cores that were the grandfathers of todays modern cores.........

If your having trouble getting your current ball down the lane because it's too strong for the condition, then playing a different part of the lane that has more oil, or changing to a weaker ball is the way to go.

If your getting tired because your trying to purposely roll the ball faster than you normally do then dropping ball weight is not the answer.  You only want to drop ball weight if your getting worn out by the end of a league session or because of wear and tear on your body.

I used to roll 16lb equipment for a very long time.  3 years ago I decided to drop down to 15lb equipment.  I did this for a couple reasons.  One of the reasons was to prevent wear and tear on my body.  The other reason was because of carry.  I actually get better carry from 15lb equipment than I do with 16lb.  With 16lb equipment I was leaving too many 9 pins on pocket hits.  The 16lb ball was driving thru the pins too hard.  When I made the switch to 15lb my pocket carry got a lot better.

It's funny you say that. I've been kind of switching back and forth between 15 and 16 for the last few years, just trying to figure out what worked the best, and I noticed the same thing! One thing I thought of and figured out the beginning of last year is that of all the years I bowled with 16lb stuff, no honor scores...15lbs, different story, 5 300's 3 299's and a 298! Don't think I'll ever throw 16 again.

I'd say either a Doom or a Vibe will work.  I have the purple, but the Cherry should work just as well, if not better.

Thanks for the replies. Went with the Blue Vibe at 14lbs and it was money. Looks like I might adjust my whole arsenal to 14 for this particular shot. I was supprised at the carry for 14lbs. Hammer rules!
