Chitown,

Don't get me wrong, I think that the original Black Widow is one of the best balls that I've ever used, that's why I have a basically brand new one sitting in the basement for rainy days down the road.

I haven't thrown the pearl a great deal, but it is a fine piece of gear as well.

Personally, I find the Bite to be way too similar to my original solids, but that's not an entirely bad thing, just an overlapping thing.

But, to me, the Venom seems like nothing more than a houseshot ball. Can you really expect to ever be able to utilize that much length and backend on any sort of tighter pattern? I don't think it likely.

Exactly.  What do 90% of bowlers say when they walk into the pro shop?  "I want something that goes long and hooks a ton on the backend."  That's what sells to the average bowler.

Your point is well taken, Dan, so I know why they are doing it. I guess I was just hoping that they would break from that mold and put out something of greater value to the arsenal. Personally, I think the name recognition of the Widow line would have been enough on its own to get people to buy an earlier rolling edition. About the only type of ball that wouldn't sell is one that, dun, dun, dun, ...doesn't hook a lot! Oh no, perish the thought!

I agree with you Jeremy, I don't think any of the widows went long either,I have them all, I'm interested in seeing what the venom will do, cause the bite does turn on the backend, and if it will be more backend than that it will be fun to have

Agreed. I don't know that I would ever need more length or backend then the Pearl, and while the Widow is good for up to medium heavy, if one ever bowls in truly heavy oil, that is where the gap is.

But, unless you are on tour, who ever sees heavy oil. The house I bowl in say that they can not afford to put it down.

Does anyone else think that Hammer might be going a bit too far here? Sure, the ball will sell, but do Hammerheads really need a Widow that goes even longer and hooks even harder? The pearl already gets a very good amount of length and turns over nasty hard. Personally, I would rather have seen a Widow for truly heavy stuff. Then again, the Widow line has been all about length and backend, so why stop now, right?

I may at some point check this one out, for me the pearl was really strong downlane, but just not snappy. The ball really rolled through the backends for me. The layout was a typical asymmetrical layout for me that normally lets the ball show its characteristics, 4x4 pin up. It reacted nicely, but just lacked pop for me and at times just wouldn't make the corner when I had to move in.

I got the pearl on a trade. Refreshed the cover 3000 abralon, and polished it with Beans sauce. I can use it the second and third games when the heads begin to breakdown, playing down and in on the same line as the original widow on a fresh shot. The ball really shines then. On a fresh shot, split city. The pearl does not make the turn strong enough. Another guy in our league has experienced the same thing with his pearl. He just has not figured out that he should not use the ball the first game or so.
