Hammer Sling Blade.....Where does it fit today?
« on: February 19, 2012, 12:24:20 PM »
I was digging through my stash of old balls and happened across a used Sling Blade. Now I remember the ball being labelled as a drier lane ball "back in the day" so.....where would it fit today???

How would it compare to the Vibe line??? Backlashes?

Thanks in advance....

I always wanted to try one of those.
Back then it would have fit in the Backlash area, I suspect between the Red and the Blue. It had a a sort of muted backend but always seemed to hit hard. Very similar in concept to the Brunswick Slay/R, in that it was a control ball that could be used for light oil up to true medium-heavy if you played the right line with ball speed control. Its forte was probably medium-light to maybe medium oil. Today, I suspect it would light to medium-light oil.

I think it could be great for the amount of oil you see, Doug.

It is the silver/green one? charlest hit it very well - it was/is a rather flippy piece for medium to medium-dry conditions, IMHO comparable to the Monster Scream/R with N'Control coverstock from Brunswick. I do not think that it is as weak as the Slay/R, though, but the ball was the "go long flip hard" ball in the Blade line at its time. Around here, a Japanese bowler still uses one. He has lots of hand, but this seems to fit the ball's coverstock properties well.

Today, I'd see it at the lower end of the Vibes, or as a juiced-up Backlash.

Personally, I'd love to try an original Blade (the blue/yellow solid one), maybe with some polish.

For those of you who replied on topic, I thank you. Your sentiments seem to match what my memory of what the ball was as well...it's going to the layout table and then on to the press!!!

Hey Doug,

How long have you had that ball? I remember back in the day, I bought one from you. You drilled and shipped it and then I traded it back to you for something else....that's got to be 7 or more years ago...wonder if this is the same ball. I ended up getting another later and it became my favorite ball of all time. Just recently put it down as it was just plum wore out. I know that mine was stronger than advertised and rolled with great control on medium oil!

I remember that trade Tracy but this isn't the same ball. I got this ball from TommyMo after I stupidly let the one I got back from you go...

I can't wait to see how it works at the synthetic house I am bowling at...my Grape Vibe is too much ball if I put any hand in it at all. My new Blue is pretty good there but I want resin to help give me a little bit of leeway at the pocket....Blue forces me to be spot on.
