Building an Arsenal
« on: February 15, 2016, 11:14:36 AM »
I am just getting back into bowling.  I used to carry a barely above 200 average.  I am currently a few weeks back in on league racing to get a tournament handicap and averaging around a 190.  I currently have a spare ball, Brunswick LT48 and a Storm Hyroad Pearl.  I am not a fan of the HyRoad but I think it may be drilled way too strong for my motion.

My home lanes are notoriously dry and I have been told I am a rev dominant bowler.  If I were to try out a Hammer brand ball what would be the best introduction?  I am looking at the Hammer Viral.  I really like the look and the numbers sound right.  What are your thoughts and what would I do going up from there for medium and heavy oil?  I prefer a ball to react evenly down the lane rather than a huge backend hook.

I do not care about overlap, I am looking at creating an arsenal from scratch.

Thank you in advance.

So you mostly play on light oil to desert conditions?
Do you ever play on heavy oil?
There's a few factors you ahve to consider when you're building an arsenal.
What oil pattern do you play the most on, what kind of bowler are you, style and such.
If you're a stroker/straight player, then an agressive ball will help a lot.
If you're a cranker, then an agressive ball might be hard to control.
If you play on heavy oil, then you should get a heavy oil ball.
But since you play on desert, you should get a light oil ball, like Loco Pearl.

Since you want to try Hammer now:
Scandal or Bad Intentions Hybrid for heavy oil
Viral Solid or Arson Solid for medium or lower.
And the Blue or Burgundy for desert.
So since you're saying you play on little oil most, get a medium oil ball and one of the lower performance balls just in case the medium oil ball becomes too agressive.

Most used:
Motiv Venom Shock (14)
DV8 Grudge Hybrid (14)
Hammer Scandal (14)
DV8 Freakshow (14)

Sometimes.
C300 Swerve (14)
Motiv Jackal LE (14)

Retired:
Roto Grip Sinister (13)
Motiv Jackal (14)

Given to a no-thumber in the club:
Brunswick T-zone (13)

Might stick with Motiv from now on.

Viral, either solid or Pearl, would be a good start for the dry house shot you describe.  After that I am not familiar enough with a lot of the Hammer line.  However, I am no fan of the Burgundy hammer that was suggested.  Very condition specific.  Most of the time it has the worst attributes of both a resin and pure urethane ball.  It will over react off the dry, but doesn't have the continuation when it gets too close to the oil.  Arson Low Flare might be another option.  It would be a step up from the Virals, but still be pretty good on dry, although it might be close to the Lt 48.
