Burn vs BW Pearl
« on: November 26, 2009, 12:40:38 AM »
Okay - I'm back in the game after 20 years. I've gone 4 times in the last month and feel I am getting my game back. Shot a 599 this evening. Fatigue is a problem (and other reasons) so I'm getting some new equipment and know that the balls are stonger than my old 16lb urethane ones from 20 years ago (still using them right now though). I had the guy at the pro shop watch me for a bit, then he asked me to throw his BW Pearl and Sting. We are both lefties with roughly the same span. I really liked the way both of these reacted, had 7 strikes on the 10 balls I threw. Then when we went to the shop to look at the catalog, he suggest I get the Raw Hammer Burn. I know the price is different and he may have had that in mind, but honestly, for a few dollars more, I'd rather have the better equipment. As background, I consider myself a tweener, speed right now is about 15 1/2 - 16, but I expect that will increase as I build up arm strength and get a lighter ball. My preferred shot is to cross about 10 board out to 5 and back in.
What would I get with each of these balls, or is it really just a matter of price?

Thanks

While some people like it, in general, the BW Pearl has not the success that the other Black Widow's have been. I can't say for sure whether you might be the exception of not. The Burn is somewhat similar but it has a symmetric core vs the BWP's asymmetric. That's a slight difference only because the Asymmetry in the BWP is not very strong. (You'll learn the differences as you buy more balls. It can be complicated, so don't dwell on it right now. Your driller, if he's decent, and it sounds like he is, will take care of those detials.)

I'd guess that many more people like the Burn than liked the BWP. It is a newer ball. Hammer actually came out with the BW Venom, a polished solid, and many people agree its behavior is what they expected from the BW Pearl and never got. I don't know where you fit into that "equation".

I say this to kind of prepare you for diverse opinions by users of the BWP.

All in all, I'd suggest the Burn as a more consistent ball. Good luck.

I agree with charlest. The Burn I think is more user friendly. I am not a fan of the widow series. Working in a pro shop, almost all of the balls we do an oil exctraction on I would bet almost 95% of them are BW''s. Not saying that they are bad or anything, but they are pretty high maintenance. Good luck working on your game.

You say for a few dollars more you would rather have the better equipment. Just because it cost more does not make it better for your game. The is a reason that the proshop guy suggested the Burn over the BWP. Since fatigue is one of your issues, the Burn may fit you better over the course of more than 10 shots. Depending on your game, it could also be better suited in terms of control.

Go with the advise of the pro shop person that can watch you bowl. You can give us stats that you think may be accurate all day long, but nothing can replace watching your release and style.

i agree with everyone else on this one. i have a black widow pearl and one thing i can say is that its pretty hard to control. this ball looks like someone kicks it like a soccer ball at the break point. dont get me wrong, i love my BWP, but i would like it to be a bit more predictable.

the burn will be a LOT more predictable IMO, plus just because it hooks more doesnt make it better. all my buddies that throw the burn range from high rev with fast speed, down to low speed with little revs all like this ball. for most its their go to ball. but with anything, its not the ball, its the bowler. dont expect the ball to make the bowler. good luck!

If you dull the BWP down to 2000 abralon it smooths out the reaction a ton and makes it way easier to contrl.

you have to remember that the BW series is asymetrical and so they are very drill specific and release specific and become more condition specific.the burn being symetrical should be less condition specific.
I don't beleive the widows die after 30-40 games BUT I do beleive due to the nature of the cores used in them a little carrydown and not enough oil and the widows roll flat,at least my venom will.on a good med oil pattern with some backends is where the venom shines.
I would go with the Burn...
