BWP drilling not to my liking?
« on: November 06, 2007, 03:48:43 AM »
Hi Everybody,

New to the forum and this is my first post.

I recently picked up a BWP and brought it to the pro shop to get drilled. I didn't specifically ask for a certain type of drill layout. Was I supposed to?

When I got my ball back, I matched the drill layout with the Hammer drilling instruction pamphlet. My BWP was drilled for a 'smooth arc' layout. The ball isn't hooking like crazy like I've seen on youtube.

Should I be upset? Is there anything I can have done to alter my ball to snap hook? Or did the pro shop drill for a smooth arc, due to the lane conditions at my local ally?

Confused.

I'll make you and your pro shop folks mad here...

First off, you not telling them or asking for a certain drill was wrong. How do they know what you want ? unless you've been going to them for a good while.

Second, any shop that doesn't as how a bowler wants the ball to react or if there's a special drill they want/are looking for IMO is wrong.

JMO.

I have a customer that I've drilled 30-35 balls for but I STILL ask if he's looking or wanting something different on this ball. As it is, he has 3 or 4 drills he likes and only wants one of them on any new ball he gets. ( No Mercy excluded ) I still ask, will ask and he knows why. I can not read the mind of everyone who walks into the shop. I probably should but can't, remember how each one likes his or her equipment. Yes, I have drill sheets on every ball I drill but that doesn't matter if he or she wants something different, I would not know unless I ask, that's why I ask everyone who comes in.

So, to a point, you both are at fault, IMO.

Fair enough.

Being the newbie I am, didn't know any better.

Do you think that's why he drilled for a smooth arc? So it'll be easier to control for a beginner?

After a ball is drilled, is there anything that can be done to have it hook more? Cause again, being the newbie I am, a snap hook looks and feels so good.

Two schools of thought. Could be, might be he thought this was something you'd get a better feel for, like at this time or maybe what he thought you could handle.

Could be he just didn't know what you were wanting and that's his way, to drill what he likes best, I really can't say on that one.

For all the balls I had drilled, before I started my shop, I'd always..always ask what to expect from a drill and tell what I was expecting the ball to do, but that's just me.

If you cam in my shop, I'd have to take a look at the ball see where the pin/pap/mb is placed. Could be a cover adjustment to make it bite a bit more might be a plug and redrill, again, without seeing you and the ball hard to give a yes/no answer. I can't say what he was thinking or see how you bowl but sounds to me as if a plug/redrill might be what you are looking for.

So I could possibly have the ball re-drilled? Wow, I didn't know that. See, I'm a complete newb.

How many times can you re-drill one ball? I always thought once it's drilled, it's set. No changes can be done, since there are holes all over the place.

Thanks for the input azguy. I'll give my BWP a few more games then I'll decide if I should re-drill my ball.

Right now, my ball is set for 'Label Layout #4, high track'. Whatever that means

There's really no number of times a ball can be plugged and redrilled, not set in stone. I never liked a plug work in my track and if it's over 2-3 then, unless it's a thumb or fingers only for span, then I never really care for the ball, but, that's just me.

As for redrilling. It depends on what YOU want the ball to do. Skid/flip , then you want a different drill and it has to be plugged and redrilled. If you just want more length and like the arc, then maybe a cover adjustment might do what you are wanting.

i agree, the shop should have asked how you wanted it drilled.  now maybe if this was a scout or tornado,  they might not ask.  but usually on a highend model, the shop would ask what you are looking for.

now maybe its true, that since you didn't ask,  that the shop drilled it to best match the center you bowl in.

now you said you are a newbe,  so maybe the problem is in your release.
not everyone can snap a ball.

i would do some fine tuning to the cover, and work with it before plugging the ball. go back to the shop and ask for some help in adjusting the cover.

it's possible that there may be too much oil for you when using this ball.
or you might have too much speed.  so adjusting the coverstock is the easiest
thing to do.

Wow, I love this forum.

Thanks for all the responses everybody. I'm just learning as I go.

I will definitely give the ball some more time. I guess there's a break-in period?

Shermanator, Unless you know your PAP or unless I missed reading it, you really don't know if that is for a smooth hook.  Placing the pin in certain spots is all relative to your PAP.

The proshop should have checked with you about a layout, but remember the dynamics of the ball outweigh the drilling and surface far outweighs them both.

Also as stated before, If you do not have the right Rev, Speed and Axis Rotation combo it is very hard to get a ball to flip. For me its natural to have the big back end but I have a buddy who has a BWP drilled more flippy than mine thats incredibly smooth.

I would not rush to get it plugged and redrilled. I would stick with it and ask the pro shop guy or someone else help and coach you as you may not be throwing the ball well.

You need to also keep in mind the lane conditions your bowling on.  If the back ends are not really dry then the ball may not grab and go like you want.

I would plug and re-drill the ball as a last resort.  I would adjust the cover first and try the ball on some different lane conditions.  What I mean by adjust the cover is sand it with an abralon pad.  These pads come 4000 grit, 2000, 1000 and 500.  Start at 4000 and see how the ball reacts.

Latest update....

I took my BWP out for the second time. Bowled 4 games and I've actually come to accept and like the smooth arc.

Easy to control and I bowled my first game without a open frame. That is a milestone for a newbie like me. I've only been bowling for a month and I've broken my personal best of 180 and raised it to 197 now.

Next goal, break 200.

Cheers~

Will 4000 grit make a noticeable difference in bite? compared to OOB finish?

Yes but 2k would be a bigger move down, knock off shine with at least a 2k and the go back to 4k carry the 2k pad with you and make adjustments by hand.

Just throw a small of water on the pad and rough it up by hand until needed, i carry a 2k,1k abralon pad with me in the bag along with Burgandy and grey scotchbrite pads. In practice i will adjust until the ball is what i am looking for no more guessing, it is legal to change you ball after warmup before your league starts.

Should I just get the proshop to sand it down for me?

I don't want to screw it up.
