Overdue post on the Hammer Bite (dead ball)
« on: December 18, 2008, 06:19:02 AM »
About two months ago I posted that my Bite had died, may it RIP.  I was given a lot of recommendations and other nice words, what to do with the ball.

I soaked the ball in hot water with Dawn, resurfaced the ball and took the ball down to 500 Ablaron and back up to 2000 Ablaron using Ultimate Ultra Clean gel to do the final cleaning and to get some tackiness.

All this and took it to the lanes that i was killing them with using the Bite with little success.

Then I took it to another house with a little older synthetic lanes, cleaner back ends and shorter oil and I'm just killing them there.  I'm averaging between 690 and 700 there for the past six weeks.  The carry and consistent roll to the pocket bought me from next to last to first place (temporary I'm sure) in a 20 person singles league.  One person to a team, not everyone being single.  Many of the other bowlers are getting way too much over reaction and the Bite is very consistent and still drives the pocket hard.

It wasn't the intent for the ball but it worked out extremely well for me.

This reminds me of what is happening at one of the local houses here. They recently changed there house shot to the Kegel's Beat'n path pattern. And when I say recently, they did this about 6 weeks ago. I know this because I'm the one that gave the laneman the pattern. Now people are comming into our shop complaining that a couple of weeks ago there ball died and just isnt working like it used to. Out of a dozen people I ask, not a single person moved on the lanes by more than a couple of boards and insisted that the shot is the same as its always been.

BTW the old shot was 36 feet in length and close to 8:1 The new shot is 41 feet and around 5:1   UMMMMMMMMM ?

So, the ball didn't die, they just changed the shot.

No,  I took the ball to another house.  Its a morning senior league where they pretty muvh put out a cake shot for us seniors.  It still doesn't work in the orginal house.  I tried it there again in practice yesterday.  The weightblock is outstanding and the carry is great on the medium to lighter short oil, but anything even a little more then medium or a hint of being long, the Bite is not a very good option.

Try this:

Bring the cover of the ball down to 360 grit.

Buy yourself a bucket that a bowling ball can fit inside easily.

Insert the ball into the bucket and place it under your bath tub faucet.

Run the hot water (hottest setting) into the bucket and let it pour out over the side and into the drain.  Keep the hot water running in and out of the bucket until your home hot water tank empties and the hot water turns cold.

Remove the ball from the bucket and wipe down with a dry towel.

Wait 1/2 hour for your hot water tank to heat back up.

Repeat the entire process again.

I would do this 3 times!  After the 3rd time a lot of oil should of been removed from the cover.  Bring the coverstock back to the grit you want to use during play.

This process should return the reaction of your BITE to almost OOB condition.

Things to remember.  Don't worry about taping the finger or thumb holes.  The water will not harm the ball.  Next, don't put any cleaning products in the water (dishwashing soap like dawn ect...).  Just use the hot water only!

I stand by this process!  It flat out works and works well!  This is much better than just placing a ball into a bucket of hot water.  Placing the ball into a bucket of hot water and letting it sit doesn't work as well.  The hot water cools off too quick to yield great results.  Keeping the hot water faucet running keeps the water hot for a longer period of time.

The "bath tub hot water method" is superior in that the oil that comes out of the coverstock floats to the top and over the bucket into the drain.  The oil doesn't have a chance to absorb back into the coverstock.

I've got a TON of games, about 3 seasons plus tournaments, open bowling etc. on my BW Solid, and have only bathed it once. It's still reacts and hooks a bunch, even on our fresh house shot.

It tracks up a bunch though, as I've found with alot of the Hammer covers. But performance is still there. I'd try the hot water soaking and see what happens.

Try Hook Again to gain back the performance most similar to out of box condition.
