Cherry Vibe
« on: July 04, 2007, 04:11:13 AM »
Hello, Hammerheads!!!

Last night, I watched a Hammer Staffer throw this ball and I could not believe the angularity at the breakpoint.  This ball could very well be the most angular of all the Hammer balls currently out.  He also threw the BW Pearl side by side as a comparison and there wasn't any.  The BWP was earlier and more rolly than the Cherry Vibe.  The staffer was Butch Cormier.  He has a medium to high track with about a 375-425 rev rate.  The pins on both balls were above the bridge with the cg kicked out about 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 inches from center grip with weight holes.  I believe that the cg on the BWP was kicked out slightly farther than the Vibe.  I wish he had his BW Solid as a comparison to his Pearl.  But, even the ball driller, Ebonite Staff Member Dannial Cohen, was in awe of the amount of hook and angularity of this new Vibe.  I think this ball is going to be a home run for the guys at Hammer.

I just drilled up the Cherry Vibe last week and it is stronger than advertised; however, I feel that all of the new Hammer bowling balls fit great with the current line-up. When I worked the Bowl Expo Demo Days out here in Vegas last week, I got to watch a lot of different types of bowlers throw the new equipment and the Cherry Vibe really impressed me as well as the Beat'N. I used it last night while bowling the TAT Amateur tourney and I decided it was time to check out this piece in action... well I had a great look playing 15-10 with this ball (Drilled 1/2 negative, 1/4 thumb) and I ended up shooting 735 (leading qualifier for the day)... I will be drilling up another one as I already loved the Vibe series. I feel that this is a must have ball for the tourney bowler.

I hope this info helps out a bit!!

Plow - What does this mean?  (Drilled 1/2 negative, 1/4 thumb)   Statics?

Just curious.

Steve,

Seeing as how the BWP is designed for medium oil and the Cherry for light oil, could the situation just have been that there was not enough oil for the BWP to perform as advertised??? While the Cherry was "in its element"?

charlest,

That is a slight possibility.  However, I work and do bowl a league in that house and I know for a fact that they went with a high viscosity oil here recently and tightened up the middle of the lane quite a bit.  Not saying that it is a 45-50 foot pattern as it is not.  It is a standard 40 foot THS.  The shot he bowled on was fresh.  He was the first person on the lane after it was oiled.  He started bowling on the lane less than 5 minutes after the strip and oil too place.  I am not too familiar with AMF Oils.  But, I do know that they went with more units and a higher viscosity than what they had used over the past several years.  BTW.....with my rev rate and ball speed, I tend to get ALOT of carrydown in the middle of the lane before it ever tries to break down.  EX:  I bowled with my trusty Blue Sparkle last night during my doubles league.  I started playing 20 at the arrows out to 7-8 breakpoint and by the end of the first game, I was playing 15 at the arrows out to 5-6-7 at the breakpoint.  Huge difference for only having 2 people on the lane and 10 minutes worth of bowling.

I do know some of your experience level, Steve. I was just searching for a potential reason for the disparity in ball reactions.

Some of these Hammer coverstocks are not mild at all. I picked up a Brugundy Pure Hammer a while back hoping to use it as some reviews (BTM) indicated for light oil. I use it to fight carrydown for pearls on (what I regard as true) medium oil. Ha! I can't even begin to think of using on light oil. I have what is ironically called a label drill on it.

So, while I was hoping there was a reason for the Cherry's reaction, I guess Hammer screwed up yet again.

Yeah, Charlest.  Where they screwed up is when they decided to sell this in the 135 price line .

Steven,

I was just looking at a review of the Cherry in BJI. I'd forgotten the surface is 4000 grit + polish. There's NO way to make this skid more or grab the lanes less. This is as mild as the cover can be made unless you add a pore-clogger like Control-It or Delayed Reaction.

Amazing! They're getting like Lanemasters used to be before the Hornet: no true light ball.

Well it sure looked stronger than advertised to me last night. I was bowling along side a guy who was throwing a cherry vibe in our PBA experience league. The pattern for the last two weeks has been the shark. The guy had a lot of revs though and was getting the ball to run up from outside and carry. A lot of people where playing inside and not carrying corner pins and when you got to far right or left, if you got to the pocket, the results where a 7-10. I don't know what type of oil or how many units that they put down, but it is in my opinion heavy and long. 2cents
