Title: Cleaning Big Blue
Post by: Doug Sterner on January 29, 2004, 08:45:48 AM: Thanks to JKiser I got a chance to try oine of these gems and I am impressed thus far. But I have 1 glaring problem with the ball...it gets so filthy it is disgusting!!!!

Mine got so packed with dirt, oil and grease tonight that I totally lost the bal lreaction in game 3.

Now the question....reactaClean wont touch it, alcohol wont touch it and I am not going to use acetone unless I have to.

What have you guys found that works best for cleaning this ball???

Post by: SUKIE on January 30, 2004, 11:02:56 AM: SIMPLE GREEN!!!!!!!!!!!! STRAIGHT UP. Paper towel or cloth rag & a little elbow grease. Darn tough to beat. Do the test, try 2 or 3 commercial cleaners & then try some Simple Green. The paper towel test tells it all. Seeing is believing.

Post by: Doug Sterner on January 30, 2004, 03:24:50 PM: Thanks guys but sorry SUKIE...after seeing what Simple Green did to a plastic display stand while I was working for Walmart I will not use it on anything other than car engines etc ever again.

I just have a problem with watching a cleaner dissolve a display and then using it on my $200 bowling ball.

I have some Ebonite PowerHouse Energuzer here that I am going to try and if that doesn't work I guess it's time to order some new stuff.

Post by: Doug Sterner on January 30, 2004, 03:39:55 PM: S^2...I am not a fan of NeoTac stuff either. About all I have any use for is their Liquid Sandpaper which is some good stuff.

I used Renew It and Hook It on my 3-D Offset and watched the ball die in 50 games. I had the ball resurfaced and nothing. I sent it back to Hammer and I got a phone call asking me if I ahd cleaned it with NeoTac products. When I told them yes they said that was the problem.

They sent me a new ball and it lasted for 2+ seasons. All I ever used was Squeeky Clean ball cleaner after that and life was all good.

FWIW what does Hammer/Ebonite recommend for this new coverstock?

Jeffrevs swears by "Liquid Nitro" also. I clean my balls with it after every bowling session. A number of people I bowl with use it with no problems on Brunswick, Ebonite and Storm balls. I used Hook-It on my Blueberry the other night and my towel came off clean whereas most people you talk to say there towels come off black, gunky, etc. I attribute this to the use of "Liquid Nitro" after every bowling session.

Your problem with using the Hook-It is the first time I have heard of this, although there may be others. Maybe it is the type of coverstock they are using. I just know I haven't had any problems and people I bowl with haven't had any problems........so far.

good news is that I cleaned old Blue with the PowerHousae Energizer and it took the scum right off.

Guess it's time to switch the cleaners that I sell in the shop to the Ebonite stuff!!!

Odd thing too ...smells like citrus....almost like fast orange hand cleaner....

Post by: freak761 on February 01, 2004, 06:34:23 AM: Doug, I have a Money that gets really dirty and I take a damp green Scotch Brite pad and Clean N Dull, lightly sand the Clean N Dull into the surface and use a wet paper towel to remove and a clean rag to dry doing half the ball at a time and then Rejuvanator or Energizer to add a light shine and add a little tac. I've had the ball for over two years and it still hooks like the day I got it. Hope this helps ya!!!

Post by: Doc Hollywood on February 01, 2004, 10:25:45 AM: Doug - Clean N Dull works well for the dirt and grime. Did you use the Elixir on Big Blue if so it should clean much easier. You should be able to use just some Dawn and water and it should be fine.

There are other balls that will work just as good with a lot less problems and maintenance plus I don't see how a person can throw this ball consistantly in a 3 games series with this ball changing every frame due to the dirt, oil, etc accumlation.

I had my v2 part polished a bit ( didnt look polished ) but smelled like black cherrys or cherrys..It was odd.

if I wanted to alter the surface of the ball I'd just clean it with a scotchbrite and water.

once I get a reaction I like in a ball I am not too keen on changing it because of cleaning.

No Doc I did not treat with Elixir because #1, I dont have any and #2 the ball was polished etc before I got it so I want to see what the ball will do before I alter it any.

for now the energizer is working so I'll use that until I find something else that is better.
