Rico Drill on a Bite?????
« on: March 15, 2008, 04:16:52 AM »
Has anyone tried a Rico drill on a Black Widow Bite and if so, how well did it work?

I normally use mostly pin under fingers, under bridge, etc drillings and I was looking at the Bite for myself and my driller advised against it saying she felt the ball would be too strong for me, so I was wondering what a Rico drill would do?

It would be somewhat strong and probably need a decent amount of oil. But it would also be very predictable and smooth

What are the pros/cons of the Rico drill?

I keep seeing the Rico drill on the forum, but no idea how it works. Anyone?

I would say do it on an Anger over a Bite. an anger creates a strong arc because of the core/cover. Where as the bite has big backend. This will allow for the best intended reaction of the ball as it will have a strong arcing drill.

Bite has way too strong of a cover to properly utilize a Rico layout unless you have a ton of oil in the heads.

CHawk15, I talked to one of the two drillers I use today and he said exactly the same thing you just said here. In fact, he added that the Bite may be too strong for me with any drilling. I'm not good at this, so I absolutely don't know if he is right or not about the ball being too strong for me with any drilling. My style is in my profile.

I just Rico'd a Bite for a buddy of mine tonight. He came into the shop, took the ball of the shelf and said "drill it Rico." SO naturally I agreed...

First off I polished it a bit and went to town.

Well, the ball ended up kind of strange.....2-3 pin, 3 oz top weight to start but the ending weights were within USBC specs (3/4 side and 1/4 thumb) so I left the ball "as-is" and didn't drill an x-hole. I told him to try it out and we'd do it later if need be.

The ball is not nearly as angular as my Rico'd Doom (surprise eh??? heheheh) but the ball rolls silky smooth and hits like a train. It does not like to be swung out like the Doom but it does allow me to play straighter than the DOom.

It's pretty impressive if I do say so myself.....

From "Bowlingknowledge" website about Rico drill:

NOTE: The weight hole is extremely important in this layout.
In a bowling ball with a symmetrical core, this will create more asymmetry since the weight hole is drilled into the core 90 degrees from the PIN, or 6 ¾”.  So, it will increase the dynamics of the reaction. In a bowling ball with an asymmetrical core, the PSA/MB is placed at a 45 degrees from the grip center.  The more asymmetrical the core is, the less a weight hole will have an impact on the motion.  But, when adding a weight hole, the amount of asymmetry will be increased.  Thus, this will increase the overall reaction of the ball.

The rico drill is an "off the rack" control drill designed to save drillers time at tournaments. It allows them to punch up a bunch of balls in advance and just throw finger inserts and drill a thumb hole as needed. For a bowler with an average pap it rolls early, does not jump on the dry, and has a fair amount of backend. If you do not have an average pap this drill can be very unpredictable. For somebody with a small track it can be way to jumpy for a good control drill. For a person with a big track it can have no backend. It has a catchy name so it has become in vogue, but you are just better off telling your driller you are interested in a control drill and let him tailor a layout based on your pap then to punch up a rico layout and leave it up to "chance". Why buy off the rack when you can get a tailored fit?
