cover strength
« on: March 26, 2022, 08:30:52 AM »
Is there a chart [like storm has] that ranks the strength of hammer coverstocks? I am looking into replacing my Phaze 2 with something from hammer, but have no idea if envy solid is stronger than juiced solid or aggression solid,,,,just so many coverstocks. I understand that cores also decide ball strength, but am just concerned with cover strength right now. Thanks in advance,

Hammer doesn't have anything similar to the Phaze 2 at the moment. Closest ball offered by the Brunswick brands would be the Columbia Power Torq. The Brunswick Knock Out black and blue is also close. GB4 is similar cover strength but smoother motion

Juiced cover is close to R2S
Aggression cover close to R2X
The non-CFI Envy cover on the Infamous may be close, but the high rg core makes it longer than a P2

I'd say the Original KnockOut would be close.  If you haven't used an Obsession Tour, go ahead and drill one.  A very good all around assym IMO.

The obsession tour was one of the balls i was thinking about. My phaze 2 is drilled pin down. Was thinking the obsession tour would give me about the same shape downlane. Was just worried the cover would force me too deep if it was way stronger. I am not a real high rev type bowler, so carry from inside third arrow can be iffy sometimes.

While the P2 is drilled pin down; call me crazy, but you may be able to do a Scorpion.  I say this because I have one and the ball is money on house shots.  It comes at 2000 out of box and designed for medium to heavy.  I just recently shot 816 with mine and used it all 3 games.  The reason you struggle from inside 3rd arrow is pin down layouts mellow out the backend which means lack of entry angle and entry angle is a must when playing deeper.  The cover on the Scorpion is not weak by any stretch as it was used on the Scandal (Hammer's high performance ball from same time frame the P2 was released).  While the Scorpion will not be an exact match to the P2; it is great on house shots and with you not being a high rev guy, it should keep you in your comfort zone for a long period of time.  I am going to attach a video of JR Raymond using it and he strikes from everywhere with it on their house shot.  This is a sleeper ball IMO because it doesnt have a lightning bolt on the side of it and it is not getting the attention it deserves.
