Title: Dark Legend vs. Scandal (Updated after throwing!)
Post by: Tripcee on March 05, 2016, 03:02:12 PM
I'm going to be buying a couple new rocks next week, and I was just wondering if there is enough of a difference between the Dark Legend and Scandal to warrant buying both? Nobody around has brought them out to throw yet, so I haven't really been able to see how they're acting around here.

the 2 balls are totally different, you can easily have both
in fact there is a gap between them where you can fit t least 1 if not 2 balls in between them IMO
the scandal is an absolute monster in OBB condition
symmetric and strong, but it gets through the heads
the DL is still clean up front, but has a bit more midlane than the previous BW balls. And is asymmetrical

Awesome. I just hadn't seen anything actually out on the lanes I've been bowling on with them, only watched ball reviews and they don't really do enough justice in showing the difference.

It'd be awesome to get a comparison video of the two.

Sometimes cliff Barnes website has a comparison tool
These may be to new though
I heard Bill Oniell talk about how good the Scandal is on xtra frame and I've talked with Mitch Beasley and he also likes it

The Scandel is a complete dud for me. Its way too sensitive, I have to throw the perfect shot to get it to the pocket. It either over hooks or doesn't hook at all. I love the Dark Legend, way more forgiveness. Shot my second highest series with the DL.. Personally I think the Swerve out preforms both balls, At least for me it does. Shot my first 800 with the Swerve. My Scandel is now just collecting dust. I probably won't ever throw it again....

I would change the surface on your scandal before giving up on it
sounds like 2000 + polish might work

rarely these days, does an OBB ball work just like you wanted it to, it often needs tweaks to fit what you are looking for
the reason I suggest this surface change is that if you throw it and it doesnt hook, that sounds like its buring up rather quickly and has nothing left downlane
I would say that this ball needs quite a bit of oil if left in OBB condition

I just bowled the Utah state tournament and saw some guys throwing the Scandal, it made me wish I had one. Ball just cut through the oil

Yeah youre right, I should take it in and play with some different surfaces. I'll try the 2000 with a little polish and see how it works....

The Scandal is simply a sick hooking ball for the heavier lane patterns... You NEED oil for this ball to work properly. It is about 5 boards stronger than the original Paradox which is a strong rolling piece for the heavier lane patterns.

The Dark Legend for me rolls sooooo close to the original Black Widow but can handle a little more volume... The difference between the Scandal & Dark Legend is about 4-6 boards difference, but the Dark Legend is cleaner with a strong motion in the backends.

The Scandal is the perfect ball for when you bowl on the fresh heavier lanes and then when Scandal is too much, then you pull out the Dark Legend to help turn the corner on the medium lane patterns.

Hope this helps your question...

Thank you, Plowboy. Was looking for just what you gave. I'm not sure if I'll be getting into many situations where I'll need something like the Scandal, but I'm going to pick one up as a security blanket for tournaments I plan on hitting.

Got them both drilled up yesterday. All I can say is HOLY CRAP THAT THING HOOKS.

The Scandal, for me, forced my feet 10 boards left of the Dark Legend. It sets up a huge roll, and I don't know that I've seen pins fly around as much as that thing throws them.

The shot was a lightly played House, 38 feet on Brunswick synth's.

Scandal - Stood 35 at the start, laying down at 30 and crossing arrows at 20. Breakpoint was 8 board.
The motion was consistent, not jerky or snappy. It starts hard in the mids, and grabs harder on the back while rolling.
I've never had a ball that flared as much as this one does. I'd say 60+ % had flare rings.
Pin left the most? The 9 pin.

Dark Legend - Stood 27, laydown at 22. Crossed at 15. Breakpoint at 10.
Had to be really careful not to feed this one into the dry too early. Getting it outside of the 10 board made it rev up and snap WAY too hard. First shot I tried putting it to 5 and watched it go brooklyn from grabbing so much.

The Dark Legend cover is much more sensitive to oil/friction than the Scandal for me, making it a little more specific for shots. Overall a very strong ball, however, and fun to throw!

Pin left most - 9 Pin.

Going to be trying them on fresher Brunswick Synth's with a heavier oil content tonight, so will update further!

Alright! Got to toss the rocks on a little heavier volume, with an actual fresh shot.

Scandal - Rocked the night with this. Got to throw it two games before having to drop down to the Dark Legend.

Started off at 27, hitting 20 out to 10 and watching it slam back into the pocket. If I slipped it right it still made it back with no problem, but was a risk of leaving a 9. Never left one, but the three times I missed right I was worried because it came back so strong.

Ended with it at 35, keeping break point at 10. A lot of high rev guys playing the same area as I was, but they were having problems with consistent motion. I didn't. Scandal has an awesome midlane grab with a final backend roll. Super sweet ball.

Dark Legend - Had to keep its breakpoint a little right of the Scandal's target. Played it out to 7 at the break, giving it a strong angle back into the pocket. Was standing at 30 and watching it slam back in.

Overall an awesome night. 268, 243, 253 for a 764.

I don't have the Scandal but my driller (teammate) does, it been a great piece for him really strong. I just got the Dark Legend and threw it some Wed and I really like the nice mid lane and strong back end from it.

I bought the Scandal and a Swerve last Monday.
I've tried both on heavy oil, like a lot of oil :P As a stroker with low rev rate, the Scandal was best.
Today I tried it on medium oil, Scandal was also best.
Wish I had a high rev rate, would be so nice to be able to get a ball to hook like they do in the review videos :P
But anyway, if you got a rev rate around 200-300, the Scandal is good for you, just got to throw it straight, on heavy. On medium and lower you'll have to move sideways.

My Jackal is better than both though xD

I will have to agree. I just bought a Scandel. I am a low rev low speed stroker. I used it for 3 games after a league. This ball is a hook monster, but it needs oil. It picks up in the mid and then has a strong arcing hook to the pocket. This ball moves!

I got to Demo both a few weeks before the WWRD.  I ended up purchasing the BW Dark Legend.

I am Stroker with 21 MPH and 215 Revs.

I saw the Scandal crossing over consistently so I never quite found the right line with it.  I was able to hit the pocket but it was either the wrong angle of entry or it was burning up and leaving pins standing.

The BW Dark Legend kept hitting hard no matter what.  I was missing at first and it was still flattening them and when I found the right line it was pure satisfaction.  I found it to be very controllable and not the most forgiving ball, but it was forgiving enough that I could loosen up my swing knowing I had a ball that would help me out a little.

I did realize later that the lanes I did the Demo on were a bit on the dry side and the Dark Legend is now my 2nd ball after starting with my C300 Meltdown.  I am doing another Demo on April 10 at a different house but I expect both balls to still be there.  I will update.

Keep in mind that if you want to use the Scandal, because it is so strong at factory finish, you will need to move your feet in and throw this ball away from the headpin, it's just that strong!
if you decide to buy a Scandal and it is to strong for your conditions, then you can fix the reaction by 1st adjusting the surface, going with less surface grit or by adding some polish to get the ball down the lane, it will still hook plenty, just in a differnt spot on the lane
