Offset CG's...your thoughts?
« on: January 03, 2007, 02:18:54 PM »
I help out in my pro shop when I have time, so I'm there at least 2 if not 3 days a week.  I've seen a lot of Hammer Widows come in (internet bought) with big time offset CG's.  I'm talking 1.5-2 inches.  It's alright if its offset in your favor, but what about those who receive a ball and their CG is not offset?

I mentioned in another thread that a guy brought in a Widow with an offset CG of 2 inches to the right.  He's right handed so it basically compensated any type of variation.  We couldnt swing the MB any further than an inch or the CG would basically end up almost 90* to the pin.

So what do you guys think?  Should ball companies take more precision and do more to line up the pin/cg/mb, or do you like that you can swing the MB further out with a reduced chance for a weight hole (given that you're a lucky one)?

i honestly dont think that on  a ball like the Widow you should worry about how far out the CG is. To me all that means is that a large weight hole will be needed to bring the Static Weight back to USBC legal. We have gotten a few balls reciently with CG;s offset like that (mostly paradigm line balls) and we just drill them to what the customer wants or to give a diferent reaction and if need be we punch a larger than normla weight hole.

For the reaction, in a stronmg MB ball this should IMHO not matter that much, even though 1.5" off the PSA/pin line is a lot!

But it can become difficult to get the ball legal, when the CG is shifted unfavorably. I have a SR300 with only a slight offset, and it needed a deep 1" wide and 3" deep balance hole to become legal at all, even though the drilling is not that strong/exotic.

CG No madda.

lay it out with the pin and MB where you want it.  Weigh it, and see if it can be legal with a weight hole.

No big deal really.

Only problem I have had is an unfavorable out of line ball with 4 1/4 oz top weight. You can't kick the mb right toward or near VAL and possibly get a weight hole big enough at 1 1/4 max ( incl. bevel ) , and 3" plus depth. Al
