BW Cover adjustment
« on: October 26, 2006, 10:03:43 AM »
The Black widow is my second ball out at a house where clean backends are nonexistent.  It gives me good length when when the mids dry up but I can't get it to finish with this lane condition.  I need some advise on how to tune the cover.  Currently it is 4000 abralon with track clean and sheen.  I have a spinner and I'm ready to prepare this ball for this specific condition.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

Mine is beastly at 500 grit on this type of condition.

Sounds like 500 or 600, Wow that's lower than I expected.  I dont have abralon yet, so how would a green or grey scotch-brite compare to 500 wet sand?

If I rember correct grey is somewhere in the 800-500 range and green is 1000... mine is abralon though..

how's it drilled because it makes a big diffrence with this ball.a green scotchbrits should be good.abralon works good with finer grits like 2k and 4k but I would'nt waste my money on it for lower grits.I just used the wet/dry paper.

red=380-400
green=500-600
grey=800-1000
white=1000 + but I've found it dose'nt do much.

Six pack has correct values on scotch brite.  I use them on my robo rule since it's particle, but my question is how scotch brite(grey) and 1000 wet sandpaper would compare on the BW.  My drill is pin above ring with mass bias right of thumb(strong)

the scotchbrite wet would be a little finer then a fresh peice of wet/dry paper,dry it would be even more finer.my widow is drilled the same as you're widow and mine gets down the lane easy on medium oil.I could go to 1000 but I like 600 so far and if it starts to hang up in the mids I just switch to a pearl.I'm useing it on a long flat pattern and at 600 grit I can keep it inside of the other bowler's track and have a little bit of wiggle room if I miss outside a bit.

Imho I would try it at 2k and 1k first if you can before going that low.  Esp if you want it to still get thru the dry heads easily.  I found below 1k too much, but ymmv!

A lot of bowlers are having trouble with this ball on carry down.  The OOB cover is to smooth to grab on the carry down.

I would try two different things.  First is Ebonites matte polish. I have had excellent results with this polish on some other equipment.  This provides enough traction to grab on not so dry back ends.  2nd suggestion is to use green scotch brite and dull it down to 600 grit.  If that doesn't work then use a different ball for that pattern.

With the matte polish I always dull the ball down to 800 grit then add polish.  The Matte polish also helps smooth the break point.

SIX PACK was having the same problem and has found that 600 grit is working great for him.

For carry down my BW #2 (pin above ring, cg below and mb 3 1/4 inches right of thumb with large x-hole = 1/2 neg weight) is finished @ 1000 Abralon and works great on carrydown while the OOB finish (4k Abralon) is squirty. The BW #2 shows a continuous and strong arc, not a hockey stick snap like the OOB. It seems to pretty much ignore carry down and performs well even after the 3rd game of league....no over under.

I took mine down to 800 wet sand and I noticed a big difference.  Overall traction in mids and backend.  Thanks for all the suggestions.
