Title: Found an older Hammer?
Post by: RickKnight on July 18, 2009, 11:29:18 AM
Trying to save a bit of $$$ but still get back into bowling, I went to our local "Play it Again" store and found a Hammer ball. It's green swirl colored, has no markings other than the Hammer logo and the number F82555. The ball looks pretty good, is my weight, 15 pounds, and was selling for $30.00. The holes were actually a close fit. Is there any way to find out more about this particular ball?

Thanks,
Rick

It may be Jack Hammer or Nasty Nail Pearl.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try to get a picture, but I lost my cell phone last night so I may not be able to.

Thanks,
Rick

If there are no other logos on it other than the Hammer logo and serial # it's probably been resurfaced to a point where it's probably tiny.

My CLAW has a logo on it that clearly says CLAW inside a skewed hammer insignia.

The serial number starting with an F makes me wonder if it is an old FABALL from the days when Fabinich still owned them?  I don't remember my hammers having serial numbers like that.

One of these is the likely culprit:

OK. I got my cell phone back and took these 2 pictures of the ball. The only markings not shown in the pictures is the serial number, F82555. Also, in the store this ball looked green to me. In the pics it looks very blue. I am a bit color blind, to green and brown, but I guess the ball must be a sort of blue/green. Anyway, pictures here...

Blue Pearl Faball Hammer

Nothing more than a light oil/spare ball these days.

Yeah, that's definitely the original Blue Pearl Hammer and in great shape at that. That's a very nice find for $30, especially if you don't have to plug and redrill.

Anybody else notice that this ball has a 2-3" pin? Definitely a great find for $30.

OK, the ball is mine. I went back this morning and picked it up. The finger holes are a bit of a stretch so I am going to have to have it plugged and drilled. Any recommendations for drilling this ball?

Thanks,
Rick

Shouldn't really make all that much of a difference unless you'll be using a fingertip grip and bowling on EXTREMELY dry lanes. It's a urethane ball so, I wouldn't expect much.

Don't know if it's got a pancake block or something dynamic, maybe somebody else can answer that.

Ball has the traditional HAMMER weightblock, but still not very "dynamic" by todays standards. http://123bowl.com/ball.asp?ballid=289

The ball already has a good drill on it, so I would probably just adjust the span to fit me.

The price was good, but if you stay in bowling very long, you'll wish you had bought a reactive covered ball. There are plenty of guys here who would've sold you one at a reasonable price (including me).

Good luck. I had one of these years ago during the "short oil" period and loved it, but lanes generally used to be much drier than they are now.

Now that it has been established that this is an old Hard Thick shelled 2 piece Urethane Blue pearl Hammer, how did you come up with the Green portion of your initial description?

Yep, the thumb hole is fine, the fingers are just a bit of a stretch. My old Hammer was drilled finger-tip so the finger holes just need to be brought in a bit.

I belong to several different forums, mostly computer and vintage audio related. Most all of them frown on posting "for sale" or "wanted to buy" so it just didn't occur to me to ask for anything other than advice. I do want to get a reactive ball at some point, and when I do I'll look here. Just out of curiosity, what sort of 15Lb reactive balls do you have that you want to sell and what would you be asking? If appropriate, you can PM me at rick_knight at rlknight.com.

Thanks,
Rick

I got the ball plugged and re-drilled this weekend and used it for the first time last night. I had the pro shop keep the finger holes and just plug and re-drill the thumb hole and then put new grips in the finger holes. After three games, the ball works great. It's got more hook than I expected but not excessive and great pin action. I'm quite happy with it, and the price was right. With plugging and drilling $60.00. Not bad.

Thanks for the advice everyone, without it, I might have let this one get away.
