Hammer Gas Mask Clear
« on: December 26, 2012, 01:30:11 PM »

I've searched around various places, and haven't been able to find it (yet), but still have questions on it.

I have a Hammer Cube, and love it. Great piece of eye candy for a polyester spare ball...

Then Hammer came out with the Taboo Spare, which for having the Gas Mask core in it, makes for a great high performance spare ball. I thought about getting it with the B/S Taboo offer, but passed up on it, because I saw the Gas Mask Clear. For those not in the know:

http://www.legend-star.com/ball-gas_mask_clear.html

This does have the Gas Mask core in it, but I'm wondering how it will react on the lane, as that is a much bigger version of the core than you would find in the Black Widow or Taboo series. Taking the description to Google Translate, it sounds like it would react like the Taboo Spare.

So a shot in the dark here: Has anyone seen this thrown, or can point to a clip of someone throwing it? Everywhere I've looked so far has been a dead end.

Its not a bigger core. More than likely, its the same size, and the clear plastic acts as a magnifying glass. This happens in every clear ball.

thanks! This is good to know.. So that leads to my last question.. is it safe to assume that this ball would react the same way that the Taboo Spare would?

Like mentioned already, clear balls act like magnifying glasses. The skull in the Ebonite Skull ball is only a few inches tall.

A good example of this can be seen at http://www.123bowl.com/ball.cfm?ballid=1757 The ball is a standard size, so if you take into account that shot bottles are about 3" tall, the magnification of the ball they are in roughly doubles their size.

You can reverse this effect by putting the ball in a bucket and covering it with enough water to bring the water level a couple inches over the ball.

That being said -

The Taboo Spare is a slightly softer polyester shell with the real gas mask core surrounded by a light density outer core. I wouldn't expect that they could get the densities right in the clear version since its only core and coverstock...

I would not expect them to react the same at all...

My clear Storm football burned a track in it to a point where it seemed to wear a groove in it and it wasn't very durable. IMHO clear balls are softer then you think.

I'm referring to the durometer of the Clear Gas Mask only, I'm not making a generalized statement about clear balls across all companies.

Most standard polyester balls are between 75-78 durometer.   The site lists the Gas Mask Clear at 87-89. Storm Ice Storms are listed at 85-87 and your Football was listed at 78-80...

Interesting.

Legend-Star lists both the original Taboo Spare as having 87-89 durometer; the Gas Mask Clear has the same, and the new Taboo Spares they are showing have the same. So if the First Taboo Spare is made of a softer shell, shouldn't it have been listed here? If it isn't, then the makeup of spare/plastic balls are now even more confusing.

If you can't find the clear gas mask, I'd suggest the Taboo Spare. I've been in a slump due to drier lanes, and decided that I was going Urethane. Money wasn't there so, out of frustration, threw my Taboo Spare. My eyes lit up when I got the most predictable shot, and have been throwing it even on the fresh at the center I bowl at. Start off slow, up speed, and barely ever have to move left.

That, and it hits just as hard as the top-end stuff when it hits. Officially the best ball in my bag for the center I bowl at.

At least for the way I bowl, with 350-400 RPM.
In the Bag:
Seismic Evo Hybrid
Seismic Evo Pearl
Seismic LynX
Seismic Axion

Thanks.

I'm already used to using Urethane (in fact, it's my B game: square up, pull out the Blue Hammer (Fab and New), and go straight up the boards), but to be honest, the only reason I was asking about if the Gas Mask Clear reacts the same way as the Original Taboo Spare, is mainly for the eye candy. The original Taboo Spare is nice, but if they made a true clear version of that (like the Cube) and it reacts the same way, I'd be all over it. If not, I'd definitely go with the Taboo Spare.

It also appears that two more versions of the Taboo Spare are out or on the blocks overseas, but those appear to be 3-piece pancake balls. I was hoping that the Gas Mask Clear would be like the US release of the Taboo Spare, but just clear.
