Title: Hammer Purple Urethane Green Pin
Post by: MI 2 AZ on February 25, 2023, 04:03:18 PM
Are these softer balls still legal for USBC?

I believe these were the last Hopkinsville pours of that ball. IIRC, those were sin binned as well, so they should not be legal for the PBA or USBC. To be sure, check by the serial number. If the first digit is a 6 or 7, they're gone. If they are 8 or newer, you're good for the USBC.

Okay, thanks.

I think the green pin is ok for USBC but not for the main PBA tour.

They were produced in 2021. You’ll see it in the serial number. I have one.

Before I posted here, I tried checking the USBC not approved ball list (or whatever the name was) and did not see any of these balls listed.  Of course, the last update to that list was 3/2022.

Reason why I was asking is because there are a bunch of them on ebay with listings like this:   March 2022 Product Ser# CPBH1165 *Softer 72D Production

So, the softer 72D had me concerned as far as USBC.

The nonconforming ball list states:

Purple pearl urethane hammer (With Serial #s starting with a 6 or 7)

The USBC revised hardness spec was effective 8/1/22 and requires all balls to be approved at a hardness of 73D.  Any ball previously approved based on the prior spec of 72D could no longer be manufactured after 7/31/22.  These balls you are seeing are still USBC approved, they are simply "old stock".  Purple pearl urethane hammers made to the new 73D spec will have a pink pin, but from what has been posted online they are still hard to get/backordered.

The short answer is if the serial number begins with the letter "C", it's legal for use in USBC competition.  It will not be legal for use in a PBA event.

This whole ball thing is just an unnecessarily complicated mess.

Thanks for the info and I agree, it is a mess.

According to the internet all urethane is soft after being thrown.

Watching bowlers shoot 180 with it in league and miss the bucket or 2-8-10 multiple times is awesome.

It is hilarious to see league bowlers think urethane is the magic bullet when their resin equipment isn't working.  So instead of moving they pull out urethane and then get mad that they cannot carry with it.  Meanwhile the guys throwing resin have simply adjusted and are still carrying just fine.

I love watching my RH opponent pull out urethane in my match point league. When I see that on a house shot, I know that it'll make my night much easier. If it's a leftie then it's a slightly different story, but I know that sooner or later they'll run into carry issues.

Well, Apparently Bowlersmart sent out an email blast this morning saying that they have stock of the Purple Pearl Hammer Urethane (Green Pin) in stock, so I don't know which batch these will be from, or if they are the new ones that showed up on the Ball Approved List.

It's safe to assume that these are USBC legal, but not entirely sure about PBA legal. One thing is for sure: thanks to the mess this has become, we are guaranteed a urethane line for a long time.
