question..
« on: May 25, 2010, 07:41:45 PM »
i'm looking for a ball to play the outside, track area and was looking at the new blue silver backlash. but the only thing i'm worried about is that it might be too strong, bji gave it a 48 hook rating which seems pretty high to me. i was also thinking of getting a freeze, (bji gave it a 44 hook rating). has anyone thrown both? and are the bji ratings crap or what? thanks!

Can't speak about the hook ratings, but based on the videos of the Backlash and what I've seen of the Freeze, they go about their hook very differently.  The Backlash looks very smooth down lane, while the Freeze responds much harder to friction.  Think banana for the Backlash and hockey stick for the Freeze (not skid/flip, but hard arc).

Take the ratings with a grain of salt.  No way is the PK 17 cover on the Backlash anywhere as strong as the Freeze.  The Freeze will respond to the dry boards much quicker as Strider suggested.

Hammer Backlashes are being poured by Brunswick? That's the only way to get PK17 on them, at least I think it is.

I have both backlashes, but not the freeze. These balls hook in different ways.

I would suggest the blue silver if you are looking for a more controlled arc shape movement. The red ball for me is definitely skid flip. It gets down the lane through the heads much easier than anything I have in the bag, but it definitely turns the corner on the backend and is very angular at the end of the lane.

You can't play in the dry with either of these balls. They both allow you to stay 5 or more boards inside the line that you would play with the stronger covers, like the virtual gravity, mission or 930t. On a totally broken down shot this weekend, I was able to use both balls standing 30/35  playing out to 10 at the break point and carry decently on what was really a horrible shot. I move and tried to play straight up 5 and both balls hooked at the arrows.

I actually have the exact opposite of you when it comes to my reaction shape with the backlashes. My Blue Backlash is more angular downlane and the Red/Purple is more controlled arc.
