There was an out of bounds from 1 to around 10. It was why everyone was using very strong particle balls, in general. Don't know what Kendra was thinking. At the minimum, if she wanted to use a pearl, she should have used the Diesel Particle Pearl, but you know how those new ball incentives just suck people into using them when they shouldn't.

Looked like one of the worst ball switches of all time.

Ball incentives.

Of course the way Michelle threw it may have been one of the smartest ball switches of all time! $$$$$.

Not saying it is a bad ball.  She just felt she had to do something and that ball was a little less(as advertised), and it just didn't fit that condition.

REgards,

PS I had never seen Carol Gianotti-Block in her prime!  She's impressive!!!

Ya know....this is what I've learned from watching qualifying at the US OPEN, and watching tourneys all summer on TV:

Once you've established the ball that is giving you a good reaction, go with it and then IMMEDIATELY, have one or 2 other balls (same balls) drilled for different looks.  For example.......when I was watching Michelle at the US Open we were talking about that, she had said that she wished she had done the same thing,...in her case it was a "longer Silver Streak".

Michelle Feldman was doing it on Sunday...she had 2 V2 particles, and ...she was using them on each lane!.....anyhow...just my .02!

Thanks for chiming in Ed, but,....how did Kendra make the show using a Sling, then throw it and it went no where ??  Did they change the pattern from qualifying to the finals ?? They usually dont' do they?

Don't make me crazy again, Jeff!  It's "Gaines", not "Gains".

I was trying to figure out what "Kendra gains (a) Sling Blade" meant, when I realized it was a jeffism!

OH for God's sake seadrive, that's a proper name, not a common word in the English language!  And, that post was not meant to be possessive, it was supposed to look like this : Kendra Gaines - Sling Blade.

Yes,.....WHATEVER !!! It fits here !

Hi everyone!
This is my first post here at ball reviews.com and I am doing so to clarify the mystery of why I switched balls on the show.
First of all, I used 3 differents Sling Blades all week.  One was a 3 1/4" stacked layout with a hole, one was a 4"pin by 2"cg with a hole, and the other was a 3 1/2" label drilling without a balance hole(my axis is 5" across by 3/4" up).  All of them had some degree of surface to them, mostly scotch brite.  I had found that using these 3 balls allowed me to stay in the track and keep the ball online to the pocket.
Now onto the show!
As most of you know, many bowlers comment on how different the show is compared to the rest of the week....WELL, they were pretty different for me.  I had a good bit more hook in the track and they were pretty tight right of 10 and left of 18.  I am sure you saw Carol Gianotti's ball go high when it was in the track and when she moved left her ball would come up a little light.  Well that is exactly the reaction I got from my sling blades in practice.  I decided to use a Vicious pearl(yes, a Vicious Pearl) with surface on it because it was a clean cover with a rollier core.  It made me play a little further left, but seemed to get me by the first match.(All week long, the further I moved left my ball would not roll through the pins the right way)  I threw 2 sling blades in the 10th frame against Carol to see if I could get back to the right and keep it online.  One left a bucket and the other left a 2-pin.  I felt that all I would have to do is move 2 right and those balls would work like they had all week.  Well, needless to say, they did not work out the way I expected.  There was approximately 8 minutes between matches and Michelle got to throw for about 6 minutes on the TV pair.  I, however did not get any additional shots on that pair befor the start of the title match.  I knew that Michelle's reaction was pretty good and it was going to take a pretty good game to win, so I felt that a ball change was necessary.  I was surprised when my sling blade did not read the lane the way I had expected it to.
You know, you only get a moment to make the right decision and unfortunately, my best guess was not the proper one.  I do want to thank all of you for watching the tv show and by all of your posts it is obvious that people are watching womens bowling. Unfortunately, the posts are about a ball change that did not work out.  Lets not forget that Michelle bowled great all week and bowled 250 on the show.
If I had to do it over again, I would have still gone with my gut and done the same thing.  I do not regret anything that I did on that show.
Once again, thanks for taking notice!  Hopefully I will get many chances to make the mistake again!!!  You gotta get to the title match to make that decision!  And I will take that chance every time!!!
Best of Luck to you all!!

Well Kendra,

I'll be the first one to say welcome to our humble little family :-)

I also watched the show and was a bit confused at the bal lreaction but I could tell that there was an out of bounds....all you needed to do was listen to the commentators and they made this fact obvious :-)

I think what needs to be looked at though is not at the lack of ball performance or a bad ball choice but look at the fact that you made the show which is more than many other can say. The meere fact that you were able yo use such a new ball with such simple layouts to get on the show is testament enough to the potential of the Sling Blade-Kendra Gaines pairing.

I was a huge Hammerhead before resin existed and their attempts at resin equipment didn't work for me so I moved on. But to this very day I still have my trusty Black Hammer sitting there waiting for those spotty lane conditions. Oh yeah I have another one NIB in reserve along with a Blue Pearl and a Nail too :-) So I am still a Hammer fan at heart eventhough I throw Lane 1 balls now.

I'd like to say nice job at getting there and I am sure we'll be seeing more of you in the future!!!

Thanks for stopping in and clearing this up for us!!!

kendra you bowled great.  You are a professional and you did what you needed to do. Like you said, you would have gone with your gut instinct and done the same thing if you could do all over again.  Great bowling!  No one knows unless they are in you position.  The look you get from watching on tv can be totally different then what is happening in front of the camera.  I'm sure the lanes played very different then how they played all week.

Hey!  We just keep getting more every week.  Kendra looked like she was having reaction problems, but I don't honestly know if anybody could have beaten Michelle Feldman, she was ON.  And yeah, Carol had about a million boards with that Throttle.

Kendra,

Tough break!  I can understand your struggle that last game.  When the right ball was working one day, just might not work the next.  You might of felt something different going on that we all didnt know, and I bet alot of us has been under that circumstances, actually everyone has done this once in there life.  Just keep doing what your doing and you have the game to win alot on the Tour.  I hope the PWBA stands forever, but if something shall fall, push 4 the PBA Tour, all you ladies have the game to compete with the men!  Hope to hear more of you on this site!

Hey Kendra, All I know is that all of us here at Crofton Lanes were sure pulling for you!Congrats on getting as far as you did! Hey the day I don't make some mistakes in bowling will never come.Isn't that part of what makes us all come back? I think you showed an excellent attitude (given the circumstances.) How many of us would have been as gratious? Remember you always have lots of fans here at home.

Kendra-

We mean no harm.  No need to defend yourself atleast in my eyes.  As you said you have to get there to make the decisions.  I wish I had that much confidence in my equipment to shoot a great game and then still try to jump to another ball and try to get a better reaction.  One thing that should make you smile is you bowled great and in your mind you will never have to wonder could I have taken her if I had just switched balls.  That is aggressive always be wrong on the aggressive side atleast you leave it all on the table.

By the way welcome to our insanity we call a family you will soon see we can be critical harsh, but we truly are family we give to each other till we have nothing left.

Kendra,

Kool that you responded!

The most fascinating part of your post for me at least was that Michelle got to take up almost all of the practice time!

What is the protocol on that?

In finals I've been in one either gets exactly the same amount of shots, or the same amount of time.

What is the PWBA position on this issue.

(insert sounds of clearing one's throat.....mmmm....called out by a pro  ...but I LOVE IT !  At first I saw a post from Kendra Gaines and I say.."yeah right"...then she starts talking about the show, the balls she had , the drillings....etc, etc.....gotta be her!  Well Kendra,  welcome! and since I started this mess.....I humbly apologize!  No harm meant...hell , you had 3 SBlades working all week....now that you explain it all, it kinda makes sense. You make the finals and make a gut decision...If it was working all week, you'd HAVE to throw it more than once! right ?!?

Anyhow, thanks for dropping in....please bookmark us and visit constantly! We love hearing from the pros!! As you can already tell from the response you received!

Kendra,

I, too, was not sure why you had made the ball change.  When watching it on tv, it looked as though you had a good look into the 1-3 before you made the change.  But, then again, I am sure there is something you could see from being there that we could not from watching the tube.  I remember getting the chance to talk to you several years ago at AMF Chamblee Lanes in Atlanta.  I believe it was shortly after you graduated from Morehead St.  I dated a girl who bowled for Morehead St back in the early to mid 90s.  I wanted you to know that you are a very pleasant person to talk to.  I also met your husband, John, a few months ago when he was here in the ATL.  Very nice guy.  I wish you two the best in the future both professionally as well as on a personal level.

I was throwing my Sling Blade on Sunday in an 8-gamer on a sport shot during the show so I never got to see it.  Kendra used the Sling all week to get there and the outcome had nothing to do with how great the Sling is.  It may not have looked good on that day, but I can tell you that I've made over 2 grand with mine in the two weeks I've had it.  A another tournament, I was using the Blade solid and made a switch to the Sling and shot 279, 268 on different pairs.

When a PBA national title holder and current team USA member refuse to bowl me unless I switch balls says great things about the ball.  They are both on staff with other companies and threw my ball and couldn't believe the reaction.

For the price, the Sling is the best ball ever made.   Thanks Hammer!

Kendra,

Great to see you on the show and here on this forum.  I hope you continue to give us the benefit of your experience.

I'm sure that you will not remember, but I had the pleasure of crossing with you at a Tournament Concepts tournament at AMF Clinton several years ago.  I bowled badly but you made the lanes look easy and I think you may have won.

Please say hello to John, he took good care of our group from the D.C. area at the Storm booth in Reno '98.  I have moved back to my home town of Harrisburg, PA and certainly enjoyed seeing you bowl here a few weeks ago.

Jeffrevs,
I tried using my 3 1/4" stacked.  I threw it a little in practice and it hooked pretty early, so I sent it to get some polish put on it before the start of my match with Carol.  So part of the reason it went a lot straighter than all week is because I put a bit of shine on it.  I was really hoping it would give me some hold, but it ended up being to clean through the front of the lane.  Oh Well!!

To everyone else(except the kid who thinks I am an idiot),
Thanks for the support and CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.  I really enjoy being on TV and giving it everything I have.  Its nice to be recognized for it!

Thanks for letting me into the club!!

Kendra,

Nice to hear from you on this site. I hope it is the first of many posts for you.  As you may know, we hear from Kimbo now and then as well, which is always interesting and exciting for us "hacks".  By the way,it was a pleasure meeting you and John at Ron C's during the "Hammer Challenge" in North Carolina in March.

Clearly, Michelle was lined up on the pair in the final match and she can carry 10 with the best of them.  I agree that it appeared you tested the waters at the end of that first game.  Of course, if you bowl 300 the next game, you are applauded for making such a bold move.  It didn't work out, but you obviously had a fantastic week even to get the opportunity at the title.  No reason to beat yourself up about it and it is good to see that is not your approach.  I hope the PWBA finds the $$ so that class acts like you and many of the other ladies can continue to compete on tour and that viewers like myself will continue to enjoy watching you and your fellow bowlers perform.  Good Luck!!

Mike

Kendra,

Thanks for stopping in to clarify the ball change.  I have a couple of questions to ask.

1) How do you like the Sling Blade especially in box or polished condition? Can you compare it to the blade pearl?  I am looking for a med-dry lane ball that won't "jerk" on dry backends, looking for a strong but controlled move.

2)  How often do you or other ladies on tour take a "weaker" ball (like the Sling Blade) and drill it stronger and add some surface to play more in the oil?  This seems to work well for me in some PBA regionals.

Jeff,
1) I personally like the sling blade with a light grey scotch brite pad on it.  To me it really defines the break point.  Compared to the blade pearl, it is more skid flippy.  The blade pearl is is a more even/early rolling pearlized ball.
2)  I know that I really like to use "weaker balls" with stroger drills and surface.  I think that it takes a lot of the over/under out of tricky conditions.  They tend to make a more defined move than shinier strong balls.

Hope that answered your questions!
Best of Luck.
