black widow help
« on: September 25, 2007, 03:37:14 PM »
wondering what pin length and top weight I need on a black widow for skid/flip layout?

I track high, about .5 inch from the thumbhole.

also where is a good place for the mass bias for a high track?

my stats are in my profile.

thanks

first of all, you are going to love the black widow.

second, here is one suggestion that you can try for the reaction you are trying to achieve:
pin: 2"-3"
tw: around 3.0

place pin 4 1/2"-5" from your positive axis point and place the mass bias at 75 degrees. this will help the ball get down lane for you, since you have a little slower speed, but will still give you a good turn as well. the one thing you may have to do is play with the surface a little bit if it does not go long enough. let us know what you end up doing and how it works for ya. good luck!!

I agree with dballz

2-3inch pin
2.5-3oz of topweight

But I will add put the pin over your fingers, and polish it. Having the dull box finish smooths out the backend.

yeah I plan on polishing it up, I normally use pearl balls but sounds like a lot of people had had success with this ball with some polish on it.

I would like to hear more people's comments on mass bias locations and what those locations can achieve

The ones I've drilled were all ranging from 4.5 to 5.25in pin/pap, mb ranging from 1.75 - 3in from the thumb. Tw's I really don't remember but most my customers like between 2.5-3.5 with all being 3-4in pins.

I'm not saying a shorter pin/smaller tw won't work, just those were the ones I've drilled. All have kept the ball dull, but 1 had the cover taken to 2000 the rest were box.

One is a high tracker the rest in the medium range, none has any problem with clipping the thumb.

Hope that helped in some way.

well its ordered, i got a 3-4 inch pin with 2.5-3 top weight.

I'm thinking a 5.5 pin to pap and 60 degree layout, that puts the MB at 5" from pap. and a 3 inch pin-val buffer.

I drew up a 75 degree layout on a ball I have laying around and as high as I track and the angle I track away from the fingers more(my pap is up 3/4) the MB seems to be really close to the track unless the grip ends up in a weird place. 60 degree seems to look more like the the MB is between my val and track and puts the MB around 5" from my PAP.

hopefully that gets me the nice backend reaction I'm hoping for out of this ball.

Ebonite3006, thanks for stating that about the pin being over the fingers. forgot that little detail. i can be a toe at times. LOL!!

kleptic. the farther you put the pin from your pap, the closer the mb moves to your track, when you lay it out at 75*. if you laid one out at 4 1/2, 75* & pin up ( Ebonite3006), you will see that your mb will move to the right some and not be so close to your track. i am currently laying out a widow pearl at 75* and noticed the mb movement closer to my track each time i went from 4 1/2" to 5". just thought i would give you an example.

the only thing i would worry about with the 60*, is that it will start to hook sooner than what you are looking for. even if you do polish it, it will go a little longer, but may not have quite the bite on the backends. i could be wrong though. wouldn't be the 1st time and i am pretty sure it won't be the last!!

once again, good luck & please let us know how it works for you. can never have enough testimonies on a ball and different reactions.

i'll play around with layouts a little more see if I can get 75 to work and still look like its some place between my val and track. I assume that might matter...
