Hammer Demo Challenge 4-10
« on: April 09, 2004, 10:26:57 PM »
Kudos to the staff at DJ's Pro Shop (Chris, John and John's wife... sorry I forgot what her name is) as well as Tom the Hammer representative for a fine Hammer Demo Challenge held today at Auburn Ten Pin. Got the chance to try out 6 of the 7 balls on offer (Big Blue Pearl, Turbo Diesel, Power Diesel, Sling Blade, Sharp Blade and Blade Reactive). I enjoyed the fact that 4 of the lanes were set up with a shorter oil pattern and the last 6 were set up with a longer pattern to see what the equipment will do on each pattern. My favorites out of the balls were the Big Blue Pearl (wow did it make the turn and hit hard in the hole), the Turbo Diesel (worked excellent on the longer oil pattern) and the Sharp Blade. Of course we were testing the equipment out on an all synthetic house, and I have wood lanes that I normally bowl on with my two league shots. The Hammer rep suggested the Big Blue Pearl would work best in a short oil wood house- those of you that have thrown these 3 pieces of equipment, what would you suggest? I have as much info about my game as I know in my profile...

I also took the Hammer Demo Challenge 4/10 -- in Hurst, TX-- Same problem as you -- I was in a house w/synthetic lanes that I had never bowled in -- could go way outside and play the 4-board straight up and just walk that ball into the pocket....I bowl one night a week on thirty year old wood lanes -- the shot there is inside-out --- between 2-3rd arrows to start and closer to 3-4th as the shot breaks down, depending on how far in you like to go...I brought my Big Blue and Hammer Vicious with me to throw a couple of times as "benchmark" shots-- the drillings on the test balls are "generic" so you get to see the true action of the ball.  I went there mostly to test the BBP-- I found that it did go a lot longer for me than Big Blue -- then made an arc and hit H-A-R-D--actually suprised me now hard it hit-- Looking for something I can stay on the right side of the lane when they start to break down -- but I still can't say how the BBP will handle carry-down.  I would think the rep gave you good advice  provided its short oil.  I also threw the Vicious Strike -- has a bigger move than my Vicious, but Don't see as I need it right now based on where I'm bowling.  Most impressed with the Vicious Attack -- to borrow a phrase, kind of like my Vicious on steroids -- big hit, but I can see me being able to swing the Attack, whereas I use the Vicious more straight up -- hope this input helps you somewhat.  Feel free to message me if you want any more details.

Matt...  Thanks for the kind words and we enjoyed having you there!  Oh, John's wife name is Denise (the "D' in DJ's ).

I enjoyed the demo day and wished the Viscous line wasn't being discontinued since I was looking forward to trying the Attack and Strike.  I got to throw 6 balls in total and also liked the Big Blue Pearl and Turbo Diesel.  Being a "heavy handed righty" I usually don't like particle equipment, but I can see where the BBP would fit in my game / bag.  The Turbo was such a great ball!  What Tom told me help pretty true from what I saw:  "It's a V2 with more backend"

One small correction about the lanes though: we only have synthetic heads, our backends are still wood.  True with you bowling on a all wood house the ball will loose energy in the heads more, but you also get to play on the left side of the lane where the oil holds up and the heads should be fresher so it's hard for me to judge.  I can understand Tom's recommendation for the Big Blue Pearl as it has a fairly high particle load.  This will help control the amount of hook off of the wet / dry transition, thereby giving you some control when the lanes hooks early and hard.  The Turbo and Sharp would both hook too much off of the transition since they are reactive shelled balls.
